The activity within SFF gathered the same group of young people but also invited some new participants. Maggie Murphy is the Head of Shaftesbury U.S. and focused on development for the U.S., Canadian and international markets. With more than twenty years’ experience in television development and production, Maggie Murphy most recently served as Senior Vice President of Development for Cookie Jar Entertainment. Prior to that, she served as President of Kiefer Sutherland’s Eastside Entertainment, part of 20th Century Fox, where she oversaw the development of comedy and drama for television, film and digital media and brokered deals for property acquisition and Emmy award-winning writer Michael Caleo (The Sopranos) and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lucinda Franks, among others. Before that, Murphy served as Senior Vice President of Drama Development for UPN/CW. She also supervised creation, from inception to series, of a variety of shows including Veronica Mars. Before CW, Murphy served as Senior Vice President during the inception of Regency TV. During her six-year tenure there, she helped create and develop top-rated series including Roswell, Bernie Mac, and Malcolm in the Middle. Murphy also worked in development early in her career at 20th Century Fox where she was involved in the development of X-Files and The Simpsons. Maggie Murphy also served as Development Executive for David Kelley, developed Ally McBeal, The Practice and Chicago Hope. Debra Zimmerman has been the Executive Director of Women Make Movies, a non-profit New York-based social enterprising organization that supports women filmmakers since 1983. During her tenure, it has grown into the largest distributor of films by and about women in the world. Women Make Movies’ internationally recognized Production Assistance Program has helped thousands of women get their films made. Films from WMM programs have been nominated or won Academy Awards for the twelve of the last thirteen years, including recent Academy Award for Best Documentary winner, “Citizen Four” by Laura Poitras. Debra has been traveling the world as a speaker on independent film distribution, marketing and financing as well as on women’s cinema. She has moderated panels and given masterclasses at the Sundance and Toronto International Film Festivals and IDA’s Getting Real Conference as well as other events in Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. She has keynoted conferences and spoken on panels, including the Women’s Film History Conference at the University of Sunderland, the Visible Evidence Conference at NYU and the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference at the Boston University. She lectures regularly at universities across the United States, including Harvard, Smith College, Bryn Mawr, UCLA and others. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the New York Women in Film and Television’s Loreen Arbus Changemaker Award, the Athena Award and Hot Docs’ 2013 Doc Mogul Award. . . . Should you be lucky enough to find yourself in Sarajevo in August, you are very lucky indeed as the Sarajevo Film Festival takes over the town. The streets are lined with flags and posters (pic 1) and the city is packed with people. There are special exhibits, like the film set photos of Brigitte Lacomb at the National Gallery of Art (pic 2- I actually heard her speak about her work). Our Encounter #131 is with Bosnian-Dutch filmmaker Ena Sendijarević from this year's Sarajevo Film Festival. . . . She studied Film Studies at the University of Amsterdam and the Freie Universität Berlin, before graduating from the Netherlands Film Academy as a writer/director in 2014. She directed several short films like “Travelers into the Night” (2013) and “Fernweh” (2014). Her latest short “Import” premiered in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs strand at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and traveled to numerous film festivals ever since. It was the official Dutch Short Film entry for the 2017 Academy Awards. “Take Me Somewhere Nice” is Ena’s debut feature film. It premiered in the Tiger Competition at the 2019 International Film Festival Rotterdam - IFFR where it won the Special Jury Award for Exceptional Artistic Achievement. Camille Hébert-Bénazet is in charge of the sprawling beehive of activity that marks the six-day program called "Short Film Corner" organized by the Festival de Cannes. She is also a member of the Cannes’ Short Film Selection Committee. After studying Art, Communication and Language in Nice, she joined the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. In addition to that, she’s been working with Le Public Système Cinéma, organizing festivals such as the Deauville American Film Festival.
