New Episode: Barbarian's Taming, by Ruby Dixon. Huge thanks to @berkleyromance for the free ARC of their upcoming special edition! Ice Planet Barbarians: the series where you come for the weird fated mates based on a symbionte and you stay for the plethora virgin heroes. So what happens in this one? Well, the MMC Hassen kidnapped the sister of the FMC, Maddie. But we can all forgive him because he was just lonely and dumb. Now he knows he should have taken --- no, Hassen, COURTED --- the other sister instead. OK a few other things to note: Maddie is a fat FMC. We think Dixon is trying to be an ally here, but we were turned off by a lot of the fatphobic language Maddie uses about herself. Seen in the most charitable light, Maddie has internalized fatphobia and she's dealing with that on a planet of about, ohhhh, 40 souls or so. Keep this in mind if you have a tough time reading books with these themes. 50-Word Summaries: Laine: This feels like the book where Ruby Dixon figured out that if this series is going to keep going, she's going to have to deviate from her alien & human-mate-at-base formula. However, there's only so much variety you can add when there are like 40 "people" on an entire planet. Meg: When you’ve just been awoken on a planet full of horny blue aliens and everyone seems to be paired up but you, there’s one thing you absolutely need: a f*ck buddy. And if the only guy around is the one who abducted your kid sister? So be it. That’s life. I was really excited about this one. I mean that title. Come on! I was totally down for a chaotic monster/human relationship where the human keeps having to reel in her monster girlfriend who murders willy-nilly, but to my chagrin this was way more cozy/trauma-oriented/fluffy romance which is just not my thing. I really loved the start, but once the instant attraction thing came up and the monster seemed to suddenly develop restraint and a moral compass, the book lost me. I have added other people's reviews I found on StoryGraph since they actually finished the book (supposedly). It has a lot of positive reviews so if cozy/romance/horror sounds like your thing you'll probably love it. It was funny at times too but it just wasn't chaotic enough for me. 👻 "Not enough murder." I mean plenty of people died, Barnicus. Plus I've been kinda busy too 🙈 In April I finished four books! 🧟♀️ Elegy for the Undead by Matthew Vesely 🐉 Rise of the Ranger by Philip C. Quaintrell 💖 Ima Koi Vol. 1 by Ayuko Hatta 🍄 Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faries by Heather Fawcett The last of the four was probably my favourite, it really took me by surprise! The cover made me expect an urban rom com, which it really wasn't. April was my slowest reading month of the year so far, and I'm not sure May will be much stronger. But I hope to be back to devouring books in June or July 🍽️
New book review. A delightful and touching read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Firstly, and simply, what a fantastic read. I wonder if Matt Haig was a fan of Mork & Mindy from way back in the day, as the main character here constantly made me think of Mork in that show. There seemed to be several nice little similarities. No egg spaceship here, but plenty of "Mork calling Orson. Come in, Orson." I can see this book being so many different things to so many different people. It has so much in it to affect the reader in a lot of different ways, depending on how active your emotional side is. There aren't many books I've read, if indeed any, that I would suggest could be read by any type of reader, but The Humans I think could fit quite nicely on any bookshelf. On a personal note, I think my own perception of this book may be quite different from that of most other readers. I usually have very strong opinions and reactions to individual books, melancholy, joy, warmth, anger, frustration, annoyance, but I'm quite sure this is the first book I've read that gave me an underlying feeling of fear. I think the reason for this is apparent if you read personal info on the About page on my website (link in bio). I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder and I think Matt's reasons for writing this book managed to tap into that issue on a subliminal level. • mini review • The tainted cup by Robert Jackson Bennett • 4.5 stars Fantasy mystery where an investigator and her assistant, helped by enhancing abilities, try to solve a series of strange murders, in an empire whose external walls are threatened by terrible leviathans. As a fan of the author’s previous Foundryside trilogy (though I still need to read book 3), I was looking forward to check out his newest work. As with his previous books, this fantasy mystery was a great read, with unique world building and very compelling characters, written in an evocative and smooth style. I loved how the world and magic portrayed is centred around plants, brews, poison, contagion and special enhancements. The mystery itself was really interesting and I loved seeing the characters intelligently putting the pieces together. It felt very much in the vein of a classic detective story like Sherlock Holmes but the fantasy setting and quirky characters made for an intriguing story. I loved the inclusion of queer characters, specifically in the mc as the author has done in his previous books. Following up The Councillor I’m bringing up another book that had me thinking that I rarely see! The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente “The kind of hope I have doesn’t begin and end with demanding everything go back to the way it was when it can’t, it can’t ever, that’s not how time works.” Valente is a hit or miss author for me. I’ve loved some of her works and could leave others. The Past is Red rather sunk its hooks into me though. It’s just so *weird* - which I mean in the most complementary way. The story takes place in the far future when we’ve largely destroyed the planet. Our narrator, Tetley, is from Garbagetown, which is a literal floating island of trash. This book is irreverent, hilarious, dark, and viciously hopeful all at once. There is cursing, drugs, abuse, and cruelty, but also some oddly bright, yet morbid, creativity. It’s a novella that I still think about. “I eat, I perspire, I sleep, I excrete, I regret my choices, I yearn for the past. As some of you will know, I have been quite unwell over the last few months with pneumonia and subsequent autistic burnout, but I am finally back to it and thought I would give you an insight into what to expect on the blog soon. I will be prioritising the books that have been on my list the longest (my apologies Tommy and Michael - I have not forgotten!) and working through as fairly as possible. J’ai écouté le deuxième tome des Maîtres Enlumineurs “Le Retour du hiérophante” De Robert Jackson Bennett Publié chez @albinmichelimaginaire Pour la version audio chez @audible_fr J’ai eu un coup de cœur pour le premier tome et à ce jour il reste ma meilleure lecture de l’année ! Je vous recommande vraiment la version audio car elle est juste incroyable ! On continue l’histoire non pas là où elle s’était arrêtée mais quelques années plus tard. Le genre de faille temporal où normalement j’ai du mal mais pour le coup cela avait tout son sens ! Il y a eu énormément de changement à Tevanne, et pas ceux du genre à se mettre en place en quelques jours. C’est avec grand plaisir que j’ai pu voir les idéaux de nos protagonistes se mettre en place, plus ou moins en tout cas. Comme avec son prédécesseur on ne s’ennuie pas une seule minute ! L’histoire prendre des tournures juste extraordinaires, je n’ai pas d’autre mot.. et je souligne également leurs ingéniosités ! Non vraiment c’est un bonheur de suite ces intrigues !! Certains personnages sont travaillés plus en profondeur pour mon plus grand plaisir et on en apprend beaucoup sur beaucoup de choses ! Énormément d’éléments, d’enjeux se sont mis en place et je me réjoui beaucoup de me plonger corp et âme dans le troisième et dernier livre.. car disons que le final de celui-ci a été assez explosif et peu tendre en révélation ! The Silverblood Promise is going to be such a hit, I can feel it!! Lukan finds himself on a hunt to find his father’s killer after living years as a disgraced noble son. His travels take him to Sephrona, a city run by merchant princes and where any secret can be bought for the right price. He teams up with a scruffy young pickpocket named Flea and they get entangled in a world of magic and myths trying to find their way to the truth. This is such an interesting adventure fantasy with a world that is extremely rich in characters and magic. It’s absolutely immersive and hard to put down! I think I would classify it as a little grim dark, but isn’t quite as depressing as some other entries in the genre. There’s an air of hope that follows Lukan and Flea along their journey, even when the future is looking quite bleak. Sometimes there was a little bit too much of deus ex machina where Lukan miraculously gets saved but the adventure was so fun that it hardly mattered. It kind of became part of the charm. I will say though, that the set up was great for book 2 and I am absolutely hooked! New book review. Judge Anderson Year One This was a fist full of fun! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book delivers exactly what was expected, a whole lot of fun. I quite enjoyed the format of this book, yes it's three novella stories, but they are presented progressively over the course of Judge Anderson's first year as a full eagle Judge, so it feels more like a novel than three separate novellas. The three stories also progress in quality, premise-wise, each getting better as we move along. But none are weak, they are all entertaining, and are very easily visualised directly from the pages of 2000AD. Which I'm assuming, if you pick this book up, is exactly what you want and expect. One slight negative, at least from my own point of view: I never really considered Anderson a good enough character to stand on her own. She was a fantastic counterpoint/sidekick to Judge Dredd when they were partnered up, but I was never really convinced she was strong enough to take on the leading role herself. And in this book, you feel that. You want to get behind her, support her and feel for her, but I struggled to do that. Case in point, in the third entry, "A Dream of Nevertime", I found myself more drawn to Marion's character, an old battered cowbot (cowboy robot), than Anderson. But that's just me looking to balance the good with a touch of not-so-good.
