Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina. - On our way back from Sarajevo, we got a chance to spend a few hours in Mostar. Stari Most, the old bridge spanning the Neretva River (photo 1), gets all the press, but I found Kriva Ćuprija, the smaller and older version (photo 2) to be equally as charming. It was built as a test to see if they could actually create the now famous bridge to cross the river. Obviously, they succeeded. ' Hello SJC !! ' ⛪ ❤️ "The Balkan Diaries - 2023" Outside the Saint Joseph's Church, in stunning Sarajevo ⛪ The Saint Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was proclaimed a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2008. The initial design of St. Joseph's church by Karel Pařík was based on the design for a neo-Romanesque church given to Archbishop Ivan Šarić by Pope Pius XI. Work began on the construction of church in 1936, and the building was consecrated on 31 March 1940. In plan the church is a triple-aisled basilica with transept. Below the sanctuary is a crypt containing the tomb of Archbishop Ivan Šarić. There are a further fifteen tombs in the south, west and east walls of the church. The church was painted by Josip Podolski in 1939, and the original stained glass windows were designed by Ivan Marinkocić. The stained glass at the west end and in the apse was destroyed by an explosion in 1945, but later restored. The high altar of St. Joseph and the terracotta Stations of the Cross were a gift from Pope Pius XII. The sculptor Franjo Rebhan carved the side altars and the tombs in the crypts. The church was damaged during the 1992–1995 war, after which it underwent structural repairs, with conservation and restoration work being carried out on the murals and stained glass. This was pretty epic!! Thanks to the tips of @filipvandensteen we went to take a look at object505. This underground airport was one of the largest in Europe. The underground structure spanned over 3.5 kilometres, comprising five primary tunnels linked to a circular hub with runways leading to the surface. It was designed to accommodate an array of military assets and could store up to 58 aircraft in large hangars!! Photo dump from our day trip to Bosnia 📸 When we were in Dubrovnik we booked an organised tour from one of the tourist stores, which was great as they took care of the transportation and also provided us with a guided walking tour through the centre of Mostar. Mostar is home to the coldest river in the world and the iconic Stari Most which is a 24 metre bridge that is famous for diving off. Because it’s so high you actually have to be prepped by dive instructors before taking the leap (even if you’re just jumping off) and also need to pay a fee to do so. Bosnia is the perfect place to travel to if you’re a on a budget. We had lunch right in the main tourist area where you would assume prices are high, but it was probably the cheapest lunch of the trip! Swipe across to the third image where you will see Chris with the biggest meal he’s probably ever been served in his life. Can you believe that all that plus a drink only cost $11 AUD!? After leaving Mostar the tour took us to the beautiful Kravica waterfall as the last stop of the trip. We were able to enjoy a swim and marvel at the emerald coloured water before making the two and a half hour journey back to Dubrovnik. Today marks a poignant anniversary - 32 years since my family and I were compelled to flee our birthplace, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was supposed to be a temporary precaution, a brief absence of just one day. Yet that day stretched into a lifetime, and we never saw our home again. We left behind not just bricks and walls but memories, our kin, and the joyful barks of our beautiful dog and her puppies. Miraculously, our loyal dog survived through the years, a bittersweet reminder of the resilience we all carried within us. As we reflect on this moment, it is with a mixture of sorrow for what was lost and profound gratitude for what was gained. We found sanctuary, rebuilding our lives in the vibrant heart of Melbourne. This day is a tribute to survival, to the safety we found, and an acknowledgment of the contrasting fate of many who endured unspeakable brutality and the ravages of war. Our tale is one of luck amidst misfortune, of finding a new beginning in a peaceful land. I'm ever thankful for the life I lead now and for the security my family enjoys, for I know too well the fragility of such blessings. 🇧🇦 Istraživanje novih planina posebna je disciplina u okviru zanimanja planinarskog vodiča. Protekli vikend sam, sa Sulejmanom i Kemalom, izveo uspon na planinu Velika Golija (1890 mnv) između Livna i Glamoča. To je bila priprema za skoru turu koju ćemo voditi okviru aktivnosti udruženja Azimuth 135 @azimuth.135 , a u cilju upoznavanja ovog dijela Bosne i Hercegovine. Bilo mi je veoma sadržajno na ovoj skoro pa nepoznatoj planini, ali i u kasnijoj posjeti gradu Livnu. Ovo je meni veoma drag kraj domovine i uvijek mu se rado vraćam. Hvala mom prijatelju Sadmiru efendiji Mustafiću na gostoprimstvu u gradu na izvoru Bistrice. 🇬🇧 Exploring new mountains is a special discipline within the profession of a mountain guide. Last weekend, with Sulejman and Kemal, I hiked the Velika Golija mountain (1890 m) between towns of Livno and Glamoč. This was a preparation for the upcoming tour that we will guide as part of the activities of the NGO Azimuth 135, with the aim of getting to know this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was very meaningful for me on this almost unknown mountain, but also during my later visit to the city of Livno. This is a very dear part of my homeland and I am always happy to return to it. Llegamos a Bosnia y Herzegovina 🇧🇦 Nunca pensé vivir en este país dos meses, pero está cool la experiencia 8) Sarajevo, la capital, está entre muchas montañas y gracias a eso fueron aquí las olimpiadas, pero también el asedio más largo de la historia (1425 días). -Por todos lados se recuerdan los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno del 84 (primeras olimpiadas en un estado socialista) -Y parece que sigue muy reciente la guerra entre el 92’ y el 95’. Hay muchos edificios renovados y muchos edificios con balazos. O no se les quiere olvidar quién disparó esos balazos o no tienen para resanar… -En el centro de Sarajevo fue donde empezó la Primera Guerra Mundial cuando mataron a Franz Ferdinand y a su esposa! -Nos paseamos en el trolebús, caminamos por las calles de la ciudad, vimos mezquitas e iglesias por todos lados. Está muy interesante una mezcla religiosa tan fuerte en la misma ciudad. -También fuimos a ver las casas en las montañas, no está fácil subir ni bajar… fuimos al teleférico que hicieron en el 59’ y reconstruyeron en 2018 después de la guerra. -Y probamos el café de Bosnia y la comida típica, que sabe más rica de lo que se ve y sabría todavía mejor con una salsita verde. #bosnia #visitbosnia #traveltheworld #travel #adventure #sprska #bosniaherzegovina #bosniagirl
