More Progress from the weekend's efforts, I have managed to strip down further a few more parts ready for paint, which I feel like I need to start painting some of these parts so they can be finished and I can move forward with the bigger stuff I need to attend to. So first up is the mounting bracket for the intercooler ducting which I had forgotten to prep for paint last month and made sure it was ready this month. It was a little tricky to get into all the tight spots with the wire wheel but I got it done in the end. next was the radiator mounts which came out pretty much stripped of paint from the chemical solution but needed a helping hand to get them stripped down all the way. Update time everyone, I spent most of the day today prepping a few parts which had started to flash rust inside their sealed containers thanks to my handling them with my bare hands a few to many times but the wire wheel process made them look nice and shiny once again. I also found a few parts that I wanted to begin stripping paint from and so into the solution they went. First up are the pair of intake ducting lower mounts which I hit with a quick wire wheel across the surface and they are now ready for some chassis paint. The same thing was done on the mounting hardware for the TT power steering hard-line hardware which were a little trickier to get the wire wheel into the undersides of a couple of pieces but I managed to get it done. Last was the lower frame rail brackets which were not as difficult as the previous parts to wire wheel but did need to think outside the box to get them all cleaned up and ready for paint. And finally my original NA radiator mounts which I pulled out of storage so I could restore them back to better then new again. They were put into the paint stripping solution and cooked for about half and hour and here is how they came out. Happy Easter everyone, here is a little bit of what I got up to over the Easter long weekend. I was able to prep a couple of parts which I intend to try and paint in the next couple of weeks. The custom made intercooler bracket, both tow hooks came out of the evaporust bath nice and clean and my used ukdm oil cooler/ps cooler mounting bracket was stripped of all the old factory black paint and left to soak in evaporust overnight to remove all of the years of rust which has formed on the metal. February update time everyone, I have been working as hard as I can over the past month, to really push this project forward. Due to the enormous scale of this project, I've been breaking everything down into sections so I can more easily keep track of what I'm up to during the rebuild phase. I have been getting into a lot of de-rusting all of the old fasteners using a chemical product called evapo-rust in conjunction with my ultrasonic cleaner to allow me to bring all of these old parts back to new again. I've also been photo archiving every single part for each section to help me better figure out what I need to clean, de-rust and paint etc etc. so far this has allowed me to reduce the overwhelming scale of the rebuild I sometimes feel when I look at all of the parts I'm storing at home right now. Anyways here are some photos from this weekend's efforts with me cleaning my carbon canister and front tow hooks. I also pulled out of storage my new set of z1 metal under shrouds which will be a great replacement for my old OEM shrouds. I then disassembled the usdm reo bar and bumper bar bracket for some cleaning and de-rusting along with me starting the process of paint stripping several small brackets to allow me to repaint those brackets for the rebuild. More photos from the weekend's efforts. Here is a test fit of the passenger side 2kspec factory side skirt to compare the colour match of the paint from the skirt to that of the door. As to be expected, It's not perfect by any means and looks to have a little lighter shade of silver metallic then that on the door panel and the paint has been sprayed on a little too thick. But hey at least the paint is now all uniform over the entire skirt and on top of that there now isn't anymore flaking paint to be seen either so it's a win in my book. Besides the paint, more than half of the skirts factory mounting tabs had popped off on both of the skirts underside during the removal process and so I will be re-bonding them back onto each skirt panel using sikaflex urethane paste to make sure they don't come off in the future but more on that later. Massive day today working on the Z rebuild project everyone. First up is a mockup test fit of the 2kspec intercooler ducts and brackets which was an actual factory setup on all of the 2000 NA models believe it it not. It has been a long time coming for me to install these parts on my z as i had only found out about this setup in the last 4 years or so and was something i planned to do at some point in the future. Everything fitted up fine but i want to tweak the mounting setup just a little bit for the final install, to make plastic duct sit a little more rigid then the oem setup is in the photo. I also test fitted along with the ducts, the series 1 horn cover and with the duct installed the two parts are just ever so slightly touching but i dont think it will be an issue to leave it as is but i may trim the cover if needed. Big weekend working on the rebuild project, several parts have been thoroughly cleaned and then coated ready to go back on the car. The later style auxilary fan was disassembled down to its basic components and then everything was cleaned using simple green and bug and tar remover to removal 20 years worth of road grime. The fan and shroud were then coated in megiaurs all season dressing which will protect it from dulling the plastic over time as well as repell water for several months once fitted. The fan motor assembly required a little bit of derusting using evaporust on the front fan mounting section and the rear section was scrubbed clean using an aluminium deoxide solution which not only cleaned the metal but i think it also removed the goldish cad plating leaving a silver bare metal finish as a result. Due to the cad plating bekng removed, im thinking of painting the rear of the motor in a gold paint colour using either dulipcolour gold metalcast paint or wheel paint to not just restore the original style of the aux fan but to also protect the metal from the elements in the future. Next up was the 2 intake pipes ehich connect to the throttle bodies, which, like the fan and shroud were cleaned and coated all ready to go back on the car. And the last part is a bare aluminum support bracket for the euro style oil cooler which i scrubbed as clean as i could using a aluminium deoxide solution which really did work wonders on the grime and gunk that was on the part when i purchased it off of ebay. Its not perfect by any means but it looks a hell of alot better then it did before, i was thinking about painting the bracket silver but the cleaning work has done enough for me to just leave the part the way it is.
