Overview of Air Currents and Sea Routes, crafted by Hermann Berghaus and published in Stieler's Hand-Atlas, 1868. Published in 1868, it predates the establishment of formal meteorological stations and the systematic collection of weather data. As such, it offers insights into the empirical knowledge sailors and scientists had gleaned from observations and voyages. The map is intricately detailed, with colour-coded lines indicating different types of winds, such as the "Passate" for trade winds and "Monsune" for monsoons. It also shows the directions of prevailing winds across continents and oceans. Deze maand gaan we ons verdiepen in de gemeente Borsbeek! De foto’s tonen een facsimile of replica van een kaart uit 1851. Ze maakt deel uit van de reeks Carte de Belgique: réduction des plans cadastraux. De originele kaart werd uitgegeven door twee heren genaamd Scheid en Bouthay. In deze periode was Borsbeek nog een kleine gemeente. In het jaar 1856 telde het dorp amper 533 inwoners. Op de kaart zien we drie verschillende hoeves staan: De Heyligeest Hoeven (links), De Oude Sprinkhaan (boven) en De Vogelenzang (rechts). Deze eerste hoeve – De Heyligeest Hoeven – dateert uit de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw en werd sindsdien al meermaals verbouwd. Ondanks dat de hoeve een beschermd monument is stond ze jarenlang leeg en brokkelde stilaan af. In 2019 kwam de hoeve op de markt maar besloot het bestuur van Borsbeek niet mee te bieden. Wel werd het erfgoed gekocht door een jonge schrijnwerker die het pand nieuw leven in wil blazen. Zowel De Oude Sprinkhaan als De Vogelenzang moesten in tussentijd plaatsmaken voor nieuwe woonwijken. Een verwijzing naar de oude hoeves vinden we wel terug in enkele plaatsnamen, zo bestaat Borsbeek uit zeven buurten waaronder de buurten Oude Sprinkhaan en Vogelzang. De toen nog kleine stadskern is ook goed zichtbaar. Hier staan o.a. de 15e -eeuwse Sint-Jacobuskerk en het stadhuis daterend uit het begin van de 20e- eeuw. Leuk om te weten: echte Borsbekenaars is het misschien opgevallen dat Fort 3 niet op deze kaart staat. Berbeda dengan tahun-tahun sebelumnya, dengan adanya kegiatan normalisasi sungai, rehabilitasi dan pembangunan saluran yang dilakukan oleh Wali Kota dan Wakil Walikota, banjir ini tidak berdampak signifikan bagi Kota Manado karena waktu surut air berlangsung dengan cepat. A sought after mid Victorian NEWTON’S NEW TERRESTRIAL GLOBE. Produced by the world renowned Newton family of London. Dated 1863. The Newton family were regarded as probably the finest globe makers of early Nineteenth century England. John Newton trained under Thomas Bateman before establishing his own company in 1780. The label inscription states “Embracing every recent Discovery to the present time” This 12 inch table globe has hand coloured engraved finely detailed gores over the plaster core. It is supported on polar iron pins and raised on the original turned hardwood stand with simple bun feet. The sphere itself with damage but highly collectible regardless. A wonderful decorative piece steeped in the history of travel and exploration. At first glance, Cartographers seems like a condensed journey into the universe envisioned in Thunderworks Games’ Roll Player, especially with its subtitle, “A Roll Player Tale.” The cover art featuring an aged mapmaker gazing over a pastel-hued countryside evokes a feeling of grand discovery. Players might find themselves wondering which of these vibrant territories they’ll explore during gameplay. However, the captivating imagery and apparent inspiration from Roll Player serve only as a thin veneer for the polyomino puzzle that lies beneath. And I’m not convinced that Cartographers makes me feel like a mapmaker, either. Through the flip of a card, the player first learns the terrain type they observe in the landscape and then picks where that terrain will fit on the map. These operations seem a bit out of order. Shouldn’t the cartographer choose first the area they are exploring and then explore there, revealing the terrain and landscape shape they must sketch? The player has some agency to choose one terrain type or another and one polyomino shape or another on some explore cards, but otherwise, exploration in Cartographers is largely relegated to the automatic draw of a card. Perhaps this is why the gameplay experience feels more like an abstract puzzle game than an exercise in cartography—map design, rather than mapmaking. This idea of map design is well supported by the components. In particular, I adore the map sheets. The subtle weathering effect on the paper and the thematic legend, title bar, and scale entice the player to lean into their artistic impulses. Some games encourage players to speedrun; Cartographers has the opposite effect. I found myself relishing the opportunity to embellish my map as a pure ancillary artistic act. And I’m not alone; the BoardGameGeek page for Cartographers is overflowing with stunning cartographic creations. Crafting a beautiful map is perhaps just as rewarding as scoring well. In this way, solo Cartographers can be either a tricky spatial puzzle or a more casual creative affair. 🔔 new review of @thunderworksgames Cartographers is up on the blog today.
