Chosen by a Cat 😻 I know & ❤️ how it feels to be Chosen by a Cat which is why I had to see @emilyfloyd0 ‘s show @annaschwartzgallery 👁️‍🗨️ As a perpetual crazy cat lady, Emily Floyd’s feline focused exhibition called to me like the cries of a hungry cat. And neither did her work or the gallery disappoint. The colourful compositions & highly stylised cats in the series of works feel reminiscent of the 1950’s futuristic ideal, fun filled yet somehow current. The Anna Schwartz Gallery is the quintessential white cube art space ⬜️ Perfectly polished from the glass entry door to the uniformly lit, impeccably clean rooms linked by a glistening chrome staircase, this gallery feels expensive. And it is. At my level of collecting, the starting price of ~55k is cost prohibitive but certainly not unreasonable for the calibre of works on offer at this commercial gallery. Even the catalogue is faultless. Printed on gorgeous thick matte paper, edged in black with beautifully shot photos in an A3 folded format. @sweet_polka ‘s write up in @artcollectormagazine about Chosen by a Cat is 👌From its references to @ursulakleguin as a source of inspiration for @emilyfloyd0 to descriptions of the artworks themselves, Zagala’s is 💯 on the money 👊🏻 Chosen by a Cat is on @annaschwartzgallery until the 25th of May. The gallery is at 185 Flinders lane directly across from @supernormal_180 & next door to @kisume_au ☺️It’s easy to miss so keep your eyes peeled for their subtle signage on the front glass door. #theartwonderer #mustlovecats #artmatters #ellatheartwonderer #emilyfloyd #annaschwartzgallery #melbourneart

“...Post humanism, a strand of philosophy that views humans as co-evolving with other life-forms, environment and technology, informs Floyd’s current work. “...Emily Floyd continues to develop her interest in geometry as an organising principle that lends shape, dynamism, and volume to the work. It is augmented by the artist’s distinctive and identifiable colour palette of vivid primary colours. The author – admired for her ability to build imaginary worlds – engages in a form of speculative anthropology inventing, among other details, a complete alphabet and language for the inhabitants. All the Blooms are now deeply out of favour, some more so than others, and this is reflected in many of the themes and subject matters used here, once staples of Western art, now disparaged, ignored, unwanted, and unloved. And it is precisely this condition, this “irrelevance,” that I find empowering, a source of succour and nourishment. Bloom is simultaneously a requiem and a path to renewal.” Stieg Persson — STIEG PERSSON 'Bloom', 2024 Join us at Melbourne Art Fair Friday 23 - Sunday 25 February Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Useless', 2022 Watercolour on paper 76cm x 55cm Photo: Christian Capurro #StiegPersson @stiegpersson #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery @melbourneartfair #melbourneartfair #MAF

In keeping with this ethos, more than one Bloom fed the imagination. Alongside Leopold, there was the brilliant and flawed curmudgeon Harold Bloom, the “One hundred flowers bloom” policy of Mao Zedong used to flush out and punish dissent under the guise of free and open dialogue, and Bialystock and Bloom, fictional characters that embody the comedic sensibilities of “Borscht Belt” humour. Adjacent to the high art imagery, prosaic foodstuffs: meat pies, chicken parmigiana and bread and butter co-exist with Haute Cuisine… Stieg Persson — STIEG PERSSON 'Bloom', 2024 Join us at Melbourne Art Fair Friday 23 - Sunday 25 February Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image '2nd Banana', 2023 Watercolour on paper 76cm x 55cm Photo: Christian Capurro #StiegPersson @stiegpersson #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery @melbourneartfair #melbourneartfair #MAF

Since exhibiting Jenny Watson at Anna Schwartz Gallery’s first initiative, United Artists in 1986, the explorations of the themes in her paintings have made her a major figure in the world of international painting, highly valued for her innovation in painting itself, her minimalist figuration, her abstract organic planes of psychological colour and her searing portrayal of her self, the artist, in the world. — OPENING TOMORROW | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ 17 February - 28 March 2024 Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Girl Dancing to Record Player', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 200cm x 170cm 'Winter', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 165cm x 214cm Installation view, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

‘Corner of Broadway and Prince Street New York 1991’ represents the foreboding enormity of the city and the challenge that the artist invoked in entering the international arena with her paintings… — OPENING TOMORROW | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ 17 February - 28 March 2024 Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Corner of Broadway and Prince Street New York 1991', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen with fabric collage 216cm x 156cm Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

‘Cloaked by a Blackbird’ expresses the mythic capacity of Watson, to enter the world of psychoanalytic dreams and symbols. Her close association wth the natural world finds representation in the endowing of the bird a giant presence; its protection of her self… — OPENING THIS WEEKEND | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Cloaked by a Blackbird', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 215cm x 158cm Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

‘Winter’ directly portrays the artist in her natural setting, her horse paddock, her posture echoing her horse’s, however her concentration on her device is perhaps transporting her to her other life… — OPENING THIS WEEKEND | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From Saturday 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Winter', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 165cm x 214cm Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

Watson’s childhood bedroom, ‘Bedroom Mont Albert 1962’, becomes as big as the world in anticipation, or in retrospection, of her world wide career… — OPENING THIS WEEKEND | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From Saturday 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Bedroom Mont Albert 1962', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen with paper collage 221cm x 154cm Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

‘Girl Dancing to a Record Player’ expresses the irrepressible joy of teenage life, even within the constraints of suburbia. It acknowledges Watson’s own sense of imagination and glamour that would play in animating her life to come… — OPENING 2024 | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From Saturday 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Girl Dancing to Record Player', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 200cm x 170cm Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

These five paintings continue and expand Watson’s diaristic representations of her life as an artist, indivisible from her life itself, in its geography, its dreams, its fantasies and imaginings, its fears and its memories… — OPENING 2024 | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From Saturday 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Fifties Sunday School Girl', 2022 Bronze 32cm x 15cm x 15cm Ed. 16/20 Installation view, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

“An exhibition of 5 paintings is a good number, more intimate than a larger presentation of work. The title, while referring to the number exhibited, also has specific connotations for each painting. I am not a jazz aficionado, but the exhibition title draws on a childhood memory. In the early 1960’s a relative used to play Dave Brubeck Quartet records. Serendipitously I once met an English woman who had been very good friends with Brubeck’s son, Chris. She told me that the inspiration for the tune Take Five and its uncommon 5⁄4 time signature came from the persistent dripping of a tap on a water tank in California.” - Jenny Watson, 2024 — OPENING 2024 | JENNY WATSON ‘TAKE FIVE’ From Saturday 17 February Gallery 1 Read more at annaschwartzgallery.com Request a catalogue [email protected] Image 'Cloaked by a Blackbird', 2022 Acrylic and Japanese pigment on rabbit skin glue primed Belgian linen 215cm x 158cm Installation view, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Naarm/Melbourne Photo: Christian Capurro #JennyWatson @postconceptualpainter #AnnaSchwartzGallery @annaschwartzgallery

This week Paris Lettau writes on the final part of Mike Parr’s three-part exhibition Sunset Claws at Anna Schwartz Gallery. “We might even say that in the end it is the work that passes judgement on both Parr and Schwartz—just as it might pass judgement on all of us.” 1,2,4,5/ Installation view of Mike Parr, Sunset Claws, Part 3: Going Home, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Melbourne, 2023. Oh look, it's a latergram! I just happened to coordinate my outfit with the art for a visit to @areadingroom to see the beautiful exhibition by Melbourne artist Darcey Bella Arnold before it closed. I am wearing one of my Rant 'Moonflower' tops (we have a good selection in store now) with my @rats_official bandanna and @beams_boy_official skirt. The final picture is from @annaschwartzgallery where we were privileged to see an absolutely gorgeous selection of Rose Nolan's cardboard constructions 'Working Models' (and that is a Stephen Bram painting keeping them company through the doorway!). After a whirlwind tour through Victoria I am now back in the shop till 5pm today, so come say hi and I'll bore you with more art stories 😂.
