Rex's owners wanted to share with us that he celebrated his 1st birthday this past weekend and wanted to thank BluePearl for helping to make that happen. Rex was playing ball with his owner on a Friday evening in April when his movements appeared abnormal. By Saturday morning, he showed signs of imbalance in his rear legs. He was taken to our Rochester clinic, where he received treatment for a suspected spinal injury and advised to seek additional evaluation if his condition did not improve or worsened. On Monday, Rex's symptoms worsened significantly; he started circling to the left and seemed disoriented. He was then taken to our Golden Valley clinic, where he was admitted by the emergency department and later transferred to the neurology department. Susan Holman, DVM, DACVIM, recommended further diagnostic tests. Rex underwent an MRI and spinal tap, which revealed he had meningitis, an immune-mediated inflammation of the brain lining. He was treated with immunosuppressive therapy, and his owners are delighted to report that he is now doing exceptionally well! Can you tell Shorty likes to catch bees in her mouth!? 🐝 😱 Shorty's owners noticed her pronounced facial swelling and rushed her to the ER at Cobb. She was having an allergic reaction and was treated with an antihistamine (for anaphylaxis) and a steroid (for swelling). Shorty quickly began to improve and felt well enough to show the ER team how good she was at posing for the camera! Samson broke into his humans' fridge and had a feast! He snacked on noodles, rice, chicken, turkey bacon, and more! 🥓 Samson ate so much food (5.5 pounds!) that he had a condition called food bloat. The ER team gave Samson an injection of Apomorphine to induce vomiting. His hard work breaking and entering and eating was undone, as you can see in the second picture. 😲 Samson received some additional outpatient treatments and was discharged. Dolly is an adorable 4 year old Golden Retriever who presented to our emergency room after being seen at her regular clinic for lethargy and vomiting that was not improving. Bloodwork revealed Dolly had increased liver enzymes. It was decided to hospitalize her and she was started on fluids and antibiotics, then transfered to our Internal Medicine service the following morning. An abdominal ultrasound revealed significant abnormalities associated with her gallbladder and surgery was recommended. Bishoy Eskander, DVM, DACVS-SA performed a cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), along with liver biopsies. After a couple of days for recovery and observation in hospital, Dolly went home to finish recovering. At her 2 week recheck she was doing great and her liver values were almost back to normal. As you can see, Dolly is loving life again and is ready to go out on the town all dressed up! In honor of National Specially-abled Pets Day, Meet Alto! 💛 Alto was an outdoor cat that was hit by a car and fractured his femur in 3 places. His owner who is also one of our ER technicians, quickly sprung into action to seek medical attention. Alto required his leg to be amputated but needed a blood transfusion prior to surgery. He recovered perfectly after the procedure! Now, if he’s not stealing food, he’s lying in a comfy chair or playing with his housemates.
