Paper size: 19”x24-3/4” Frame size: 33-1/2”x27-3/4” Texas-born, Eddie Arning’s drawings of popular scenes constitute a significant contribution to the canon of American outsider art. Began drawing during his stay in a mental facility, starting with Crayola crayons and drawing compositions of flat planes and simple figures. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . BLUE . Did you know that functionally blind people can report a sensation of brightness when blue light is shone upon them? . A short history of blue (chronological): 💙 The ancient Egyptians were the first to synthetically produce blue pigment. Egyptian blue glows under fluorescent light and this is how historians identify ancient artifacts (pic 2). 💙 Lapis Lazuli, a gemstone, was turned into pigment in the 6th century and called Ultramarine. It was so expensive that Vermeer pushed his family into debt because he loved this colour so much (pic 3). 💙 In the 8th/9th centuries, an affordable alternative to Ultramarine was created - Cobalt blue. Used extensively in Chinese ceramics and by Impressionist artists - Monet, Van Gogh (pic 4) 💙 Indigofera tinctoria is the plant that makes Indigo used to dye jeans but in order for us to be more environmentally sensitive, scientists are able to make synthetic indigo with the help of E.Coli and....ta-da....bio-indigo. 💙 Prussian blue was created by accident when a dye-maker was trying to make red...surprise! Used by Picasso, Japanese woodblock printers(see pic 5) and architects for their ‘blueprints’!!! 💙 2009 - another happy accident...a combo of Yttrium, Indium and Manganese =YInMn (pic 6) the new blue. Crayola made a new crayon from it in 2017. Meet Bluetiful (pic 7) 💙 And of the 1867 Pantone colours, 769 or 41%, are within the blue hue range...wow! 💙 💙💙My fave nail polish is blue(pic 8). #TextureWhoreTuesdays . VINTAGE vs. RETRO (hi! I’m back! 🤗) . Can we take a second to distinguish between vintage and retro and even antique clothing? . I recently went to The Vintage Marketplace in Hamilton @thevmp this past weekend - that’s where I got these beauties. Obviously I was feeling the red this weekend. I’ve been frequenting these shows all over the province since my early 20s. And back then, all the vintage I came across ranged from the 40s to the 60s, almost exclusively. That set the tone for my style, without a doubt. Now, when I go to a vintage show, the range of vintage is from 70s and 80s, almost exclusively. Makes sense because the definition of vintage is anything 20 years or older. And here I am 20+ years older wondering why I’m totally turned off by the clothes - it’s the clothing I, and so many of us, had to endure when we were younger. So more definitions/cool points - antique clothing is anything more than a century old, retro refers to re-makes of a style era and the term vintage was first used in the early 15th century by winemakers; it was taken from the Old French word, vendage, meaning wine harvest. The haul: Those patches - for a jean jacket sleeve. Those buttons - for a b/w houndstooth fall coat and white sweater. That sweater - f***ing amazing! Those bangles - to die for. The polka dot heels - for keeps. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . ODD NUMBERS . In design and placement, why are odd numbers recommended and favoured? . Even numbers of things paired together overwhelm our sense of symmetry to the point of making us feel uneasy and it actually stops your eye from moving about, there’s no flow. Odd numbers of things placed together are visually more appealing, it invites your eye to travel and explore. I never leave the house with an even # of jewellery items on my body, it feels unnatural. Interior designers always recommend things in 3s. When numbers are flashed on a screen, 45% of us humans prefer the number 7. There are 7 deadly sins, 7 chakras, 7 colours of the rainbow, 7 continents, 7 wonders of the world, 7 days of the week, 7 years bad luck if you break a mirror. Hmmm. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . RAINBOW . Since it was Family Day yesterday, I got Jake & Rowan involved in this weeks assemblage. It took us about 1 hour to gather all the small toys of certain colours and another hour to determine which ones made the cut and then assemble. Not bad, eh? . Family Day is a statutory holiday observed on the third Monday of February in Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Ontario. Love is a crap shoot, baby, and all the tools we use to show, inspire, prove, coerce, enjoy, survive it seem to be irreparably tied to the colour red and the symbol of a heart which really comes down to someone a long time ago who tried to draw it simply and voila. Tres romantique, oui? . I believe in right place, right time. It’s been proven to me over and over. Finding your valentine, or valentines for those who believe monogamy is an outdated social construct (🤟), really comes down to wily, shifty, stealthy, drunk and funny Lady Luck. The numbers 3, 7 and 11 have some pretty interesting connotations (see if you can see spot how many combos of these #s I’ve included my assemblage). Good or bad things come in threes, or so they say (ask anyone who’s had a threesome). Lucky # 7 is associated with the planet Neptune which is associated with inspiration & illusion, dreams & deception - quite fitting when you think about love...and time spent in a casino. And 11 is either all about synchronicity or apocalyptic happenings depending on who you’re talking to. So in the spirit of this weeks consumer holiday and the duality of love and luck, do what you can to ensure the good kind darkens your door. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . TAGUA These rings are carved from the nut produced by a tropical palm tree that grows in the rainforests of South America. Tagua (Tah-gwaa) when dried is very dense and close-grained and durable. It is often referred to as vegetable or palm ivory and used as a substitute for bone and animal ivory - renewable resource - yes please! . Jewellery made from tagua is gorgeous when it’s carved and are among my most precious. They are pretty perfect for a texture whore like me and I collect these when I travel. And the fact that it antiques over time and turns a rich yellow-ivory colour is an even better reason to love it. Aren’t they beautiful?!?!?! Worth its weight in gold...Good as gold...Sitting on a gold mine...Dripping with gold...The streets are paved with gold...Go for the gold...Gold-digger...Silence is golden...The golden age...Golden years...Golden oldies...Golden child...Gold standard...Heart of gold...Golden handshake...Golden parachute...Golden word...Goldfinger...Fool’s gold...All that glitters is not gold...There’s gold in them thar hills...(the word sounds funny now) . All of these sayings have connotations of wealth, extravagance, riches, excess. On the Periodic Table of Elements, gold (Au) is one of the most uninteresting, chemically speaking. Kryptonite comes in many different colours but the green one can kill Superman after prolonged exposure and give humans like Lex Luthor cancer. 2. Emerald is one of 4 precious gemstones (ruby, sapphire, diamond) 3. Absinthe, a popular green-tinged liquor made from herbs and wormwood, thought to create hallucinations, became popular with artists in districts of Paris in the late 1800’s. It was usually imbibed in the late afternoon and everyone knew because it made the neighbourhood smell and that period of 5pm-6pm became known as ‘the green hour’ which led to what we now know as ‘happy hour’ 4. Shakespeare made the colour green synonymous with envy in his play, Othello 5. Nero, the Roman emperor, used to watch gladiator fights with green tinged lenses (the first sunglasses, btw) in order to see the blood of the victims as more pronounced which is why surgeons scrubs are usually green - it refreshes the eye to see red-tinged (bloody body parts) better. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . BLACK . How accessible is the color black? . Vanta Black...you’ve heard of this, right? The blackest black. A bunch of scientists #nanolabs took a bunch of molecules in the shape of tubes that absorb all the light but never bounce it back. Apparently, it’s so manufacturing-heavy that they can only create 2cm squares at a time. And apparently @anish.kapoor bought the rights in 2014 to be the only artist to be able to use it in his works. The backlash.... @StuartSemple came up with the pinkest pink that anyone can use....wait for it....except Mr. Kapoor. . On a side note, I found this challenging to light properly. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . RED . I love insects + I love prickly pears = 2 not so random facts about the colour red . Most red food and cosmetic colouring is made from the juice of crushed up bugs....cochineal is the name of the bug juice to be precise....which is carminic acid (carmine, another word for red) produced by a scale insect called Dactylopius coccus to be exact. These bugs live on cactus/prickly pear leaves and everyone who know me knows I love a good prickly pear. The inside of a prickly pear is and these legless insects create a beautiful ruby red unlike any other. The bug juice deals surprisingly well with heat and cold and acid environments hence the reason why it’s used so widely in the food/ cosmetics industry. Next time you’re sucking on a red lollipop or gliding on that red lipstick, you can thank these little critters for the dose of saturated, gorgeous red. Better than the carcinogenic chemical red developed by evil scientists. And, a little side note... there’s an acceptable level of bugs in your coffee and chocolate as set by the FDA. In food production, they, bugs, are unavoidable. Bugs are freakin’ awesome. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . BUTTONS . Ooh, texture! Fondling and running your fingers along these beauties is fantastic. . I used to go to #museumfortextiles annual fabric and trim sale and spend a decent amount of moolah buying up out of stock items and beautiful bits of wonder that I’m only now starting to go through and use. They had small swatches of fabric that were absolutely gorgeous that you knew would cost at least $500/yard. Buttons & baubles from the 20’s to 80’s - even found some Bakelite buckles once in a bag full of miscellaneous. Trim you knew took someone hours to embroider by hand. And gorgeous piano shalls, small carpets....it was heaven for a texture whore like me. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . MUTED . As much as bright colours own my soul, my twin is in love with muted, blush colours. They are luxuriant. They make you look closer. They relax the eye. (Aside: you can see me reflected in the watch strap and it kind looks like an eye) . Marie Antoinette’s husband was being rather ungracious due to her lavish expenditures during her reign and said the gown she was being fitted for was the colour of puce...the French word for fleas...a colour between pink, brown and gray. The next day, every lady in court was dressed in puce and it became the only colour to be worn at Fountainbleu. #TextureWhoreTuesdays . CYAN . Teal. Turquoise. Aquamarine. Azure. Peacock. Cerulean (say this one out loud - great word). I gravitate to this colour as jewellery and shoes. You will not catch me wearing this colour on my body as clothes. Feels wrong for me. . This colour is the C of CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) the language of graphic designers for printing. Why Key for Black? K is not occupied by any other colour in colour language. CMYK is about subtracting light from the printed background with ink. We start with white and we add colours to reach black. In the RGB colour world, the output is web/electronic based, so it’s about adding colours to produce more light. We start with black and we add colours to reach white. When you mix cyan and red you get pure white light (complimentary colours) which is why they look so damn good together and a definite eye catcher (see my first TextureWhoreTuesdays post). .
