😍🏝️Jessica's Cultural Heritage Preservation internship in Zanzibar: ✍️During my internship I was involved in several tasks. First I wrote a report about the threats that the World Heritage site Stone Town is exposed to, which has later been the base for an article I wrote for the NGO's website. During this work I learned about the work of UNESCO and its structures, which was interesting for me. My largest project was to conduct a survey amongst locals and tourists about Stone Town and the existing information about its World Heritage status. I have summarised the results in a report which has the aim to help Stone Town Heritage Society for developing future provision of information. Meigle Old Pavilion and Bowling Green Community Connector, Clare Pennington and Trustee, Wanda McGregor, had a fantastic day with the children from Meigle Primary, gathering ideas for the pavilion and bowling green. The children enjoyed learning some of the history and facts about lawn bowls before completing a quiz in their respective Houses. Belmont House won the quiz, with Kinpurnie House coming second and Isla House coming third, but it was all very close and everyone had great fun. The children had a look inside the pavillion before taking a turn at bowling. They enjoyed a picnic lunch on the bowling green, before returning to school in the afternoon to illustrate their ideas of what the pavilion and bowling green could be used for. It seems that being from the northern part of Nigeria is to not have an identity and to be reduced to a second-class citizen. Until I found out that being from Arewa is to be sincere and honest. Paid Internship Opportunity!! YNM is seeking an intern to work with us this summer through the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program! This full-time, paid, hybrid (in-person and remote) internship will provide a well-rounded opportunity to work on community-led programming that supports cultural heritage preservation. The intern will play a key role in supporting the Mellon/YNM Caring About and Repatriating Everything (C.A.R.E.) program, supporting California Tribes in the repatriation and preservation of their belongings. The intern will support C.A.R.E. by performing administrative duties, develop workshop materials, engage in community outreach, and complete a variety of research assignments. They will have an opportunity to connect with a diverse range of culture workers which may include professionals in public programs, repatriation, archives, conservation, collections management, artists, and California tribal representatives. The intern will also receive mentorship from YNM staff. The Getty Marrow Community Programs Internship is a combination of in-person and remote work and will likely include site visits. It is a 10-week (40 hours per week) opportunity between June 17 and August 23, 2024, and it pays $6,925 for the duration of the internship. Returning to his alma mater this week, our Senior Conservation Officer Ben, gave his annual lecture at The Bartlett School of Planning @ucl.
The lecture, titled ‘Beauty or the Bulldozer?’, introduced the students to the work of SAVE, and some of our recent campaigns including Anglia Square in Norwich, and Grimsby’s historic Ice Factory and Docks.
Ben spoke about how buildings so often embody the historic and cultural heritage of places and communities, and can rise from the ashes at the heart of regeneration projects.

In a bid to secure cultural artefacts for the future, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome pledged over $320,000 to Balochistan's Mehrgarh Museum under the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. Situated in Quetta, the museum was inaugurated in September 2022 by then-Balochistan chief minister Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo. Addressing a ceremony, Blome said: "Today, the United States is excited to announce a grant under the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation of $320,470 that will enhance the Mehrgarh Museum in Quetta and secure cultural artefacts for the future." Terming it a "partnership, " the US envoy said it was more than just money. "Working with Baluchistan's Culture Department and the Sindh Exploration and Adventure Society, we're making history with the first Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation project for Baluchistan." He said that the museum is not just a collection of artefacts but a living connection to our shared past as human beings. He added that the museum represents Baluchistan's rich history and tells the shared story of Pakistan and South Asia. "The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation grant will help preserve Neolithic and other archaeological artefacts of the Mehrgarh civilisation, as well as upgrade the museum's displays, ensuring this incredible heritage is protected and shared with generations to come." Speaking on the occasion, the ambassador said the fund goes far beyond preserving artefacts as it empowers people.
