Countryman spring, the Juvaquatre Dauphinoise à l'italienne, Fiat 1100 BLR Furgone-Giardinetta. A rare and extravagant hybrid added in 1948 to the 1100 saloon, cabriolet, Sport, lwb saloon and taxi range, without much fanfare. A curious Fiat institutional response to the ever-growing need for low-cost personal mobility, uniting the needs of numerous artisans and professionals who could purchase a vehicle, but only one: the same for work during weekdays and for the family on Sundays. The swanky Giardinetta, invented by Viotti and Mario Revelli, remained far away: Fiat tried with a slight delay by introducing this and the 500B Giardiniera in the same year, the latter with a mission slightly more towards the automotive use, the 1100 nearer to a van. It's no coincidence that the base is the same as the van and pickup, with the 2.70m reinforced chassis of the long saloon, excluding the lightening holes in the side members which weren't present here, heavy-duty suspension, larger brakes and wheels, removable axles and old circular instruments cluster instead of the new square one. Essential but useful alternative to the coachbuilt ones, for all those (and were many at the time) who cared about substance and less about aesthetics, responding to all too obvious needs but with limited economic resources: it was just the van but with added side windows and two rear folding seats that could be lowered down into the floor to transport goods. There were few aesthetic concessions: bumpers remained optional as in all commercial models, compared to the van there was only a chrome molding along the bonnet and side, a more vibrant two-tone paint and bright ocher rims instead of light beige. Definitive but not too much. Last-minute changes in automotive project development have always existed, even well before the quick pace of the industry in the last 70 years, regulated by very stringent costs and infinite market factors. These are definitive prewar Fiats, yet none actually went into production as shown. Above is the 1938 Fiat 2800, but although it's a pre-series unit, it was by no means a prototype that remained in the testing office. Fiat used it to present the new model in a very unusual context: supplied to transfer King Vittorio Emanuele III to Turin for the wedding of His Highness Prince Ferdinando di Savoia, Duke of Genoa, on 28 February 1938. A social event "marketed" by Fiat. However, this example adopted a fender-integrated headlights solution like the 1500 but which, making its lines heavier, was eliminated in favour of standard ones for the official presentation at the Paris Motor Show, 13 October '38, and for actual production. The line, although hardly defineable as slender on such a large car, gained in balance, although this one remained in circulation. Below it's the 508C 1100, from a photo attached to the official press release for the 11 June 1937 unveiling. It was again supposed to have fenders-integrated headlights, this time to keep costs down they remained only in early drawings. On the other hand the definitive version won't have fenders painted in body colour: always in forged black, regardless of the rest. Here's a project Dante Giacosa cared about a lot, in contrast to the post from two days ago, also for a matter of continuity that's probably underestimated. The other reasons are numerous and all already quite well-known: it's useless to dwell on the social role of the 1955 Fiat 600, the well-calibrated design scheme, the vast and heterogeneous customer base to which it had to address, the many other cars born from a derivation or evolution of its powertrain, the long and successful bridge that generated between the Topolino ancestors and the modern concept of economy cars born in the 70s and not yet finished, transversal, practical, hatchback and FWD. But the Fiat 600 is a special case where, unlike the usual initial design effort following which subsequent implementations are cost-planned and reserved for subordinate engineering departments, this didn't happen without supervision and approval of Giacosa himself, to keep it competitive in the years to come. So all the tacit updates, improvements, adjustments that have occurred continuously over the years without necessarily generating a new model and which today are both delight and damnation for enthusiasts who want to restore one, had all been decided including Giacosa's opinion. The increase, starting from engine n° 178.383, of the cooling circuit capacity from 745 to 820cc and to an earlier opening of the air thermostat shutter from 75° to 70-75 to solve the overheating problem, the transition in 1956 from a metal fan to a plastic one due to costs and weight, the shift of some components inside the engine compartment, the pointed rear lights which then became larger, rectangular and flat, as well as the wheel cups which increased in diameter. It has always been said of Dante Giacosa that he preferred to work on projects about economy cars, popular, transversal, widely-distributed, humanistic in content. All true. So he must also have loved the Fiat 124. Wrong, he didn't like it. Because what he loved was extracting a lot from little, making do with what was there, creating innovative but effective and easy to produce solutions to overcome difficulties without creating others. The 124, on the other hand, is the pinnacle of the creative tiredness of a Fiat that still dominated the national market unchallenged, and which didn't necessarily feel the urge to always offer advanced, attractive or courageous products. A boring and uninspired design, far from both the previous charming roundness or the 1970s new frontiers, exactly like the 850. Except that it was a logical partial recycling of the 600D, while '66 124 was the result of an entirely new expensive project. It was certainly cunning: valiant and robust mid-size, the wide body for the category and thin sheet metal made it spacious and comfortable, easily exportable all over the world. The Sport Coupé and Spider made the 124 range attractive, the Familiare practical, the more spirited Special, complete. And the overall success quickly raised. But Giacosa was clear when in his autobiography wrote about it: "The totally conventional ensemble and the absence of innovations that attracted the public's interest made the project, in my opinion, unsuitable for remaining competitive for a sufficient number of years". Somehow true at least for the standard 1200cc version, brute, cheaply-built and low design research inside and out. If out of 200 names of the automotive hall of fame only a handful belong to Japanese, the noticeable absence of Kawamata Katsuji may seem reasonable: the almost eternal president of Nissan was a bean counter, not a car guy. His passion for Hollywood and Broadway is reflected in his choices for car names: Bluebird as sung in Over the Rainbow, Cedric after Little Lord Fauntleroy, and this Fairlady. A sense of humor and romance difficult to grab with western eyes, same with the car design around it. Show it to us Westerners and we'd tell you: bad copy of the MG B. Plausible, they're both almost identical in size and style. But the original Fairlady 1500 was launched at the Tokyo Motor Show in October '61, the MG B popped out at Earl's Court exactly one year later. So who copied whom now ? Somehow both. Because in the 1950s, Kawamata San established a durable business with Lord Nuffield -BMC owner-, and his trusted design consultant: Pininfarina. Therefore while we were busy promoting the new Farina design, the Japanese were more discreet, a matter of national pride, defining a more sculptural and sharper spider compared to the smoother British roadster: substantial difference. The only flaw is that it looks too narrow. More similar in the rear wings to MG Midget/Austin Healey Sprite that came out in '61 too but, above all, to the initial Pininfarina design which generated everything and came first: beltline apexes, side molding and rear of the Fiat 1200/1500/1600 spider, around since summer '59. For the sake of innovating. Not always, indeed if you do the math quite rarely, in the 1930s it was possible to count on an equally modern chassis while setting a streamline body. Which however prospered and spread generously all the same, on both sides of the Atlantic. The exceptions concerned modern cars conceived specifically with a new philosophy, but despite this there remained buyers of classic models who at the same time appreciated a more fashionable style, from Fiat to Renault, from Rolls-Royce to Chrysler. These are two showstoppers from Bertone, above, and Pininfarina below, from 1934 and 1935 respectively. But they're both based on the traditionalist mechanics of "new" Fiat 527 Ardita presented in '34, which maintained the same 2516cc straight-six of the previous 521, 522 and 524 (which had replaced, but standard Fiat bodies although softened still remained very serious and polite). At first Fiat itself had planned of creating streamline bodies through their special bodywork department or subcontracted Savio, but given the small investment diverted from the avant-garde 1500 project nothing was done, limiting itself to a lengthening and enlargement job on the smaller Ardita, the 518. Bertone and Pinin instead indulged themselves: Nuccio, in his first job and assisted by Count Revelli, was inspired by the '34 Hupmobile recessed headlights, but using the typical heart-shaped Fiat grille the front is more gentle and elegant, while the profile is characterized by a three-piece panoramic windshield and 3 front seats with tubular frame, as in the Panhard Panoramique. Good innovations start from the foundations. Although this part, being always hidden under the car, can never be fully appreciated. As in the case of 1935 Fiat 1500, which in addition to being a revolution for the manufacturer and one of the world's most modern cars, was also destructive in the change in shape and construction methods of the chassis compared to previous Fiats. Even more incredible to think that, unlike Lancia which always stood out on innovation, only two years earlier the hyper-traditionalist Fiat 518 Ardita had been presented, at the dawn of streamlining. And which also insisted on the same market segment, but with diametrically opposed technology and sales results. If the 518 still adopted a late-1920s frame with spars and oblique crossmembers, the 1500 amazed with a single central tubular beam with X-shaped crossmembers at the ends, all folded sheet metal, which found space inside the tunnel of the passenger compartment floor, which decreased in height. The body was supported by cantilevered brackets bolted to the centre beam. Everything was lighter, allowing a lower, more aerodynamic, ergonomic body, less bulky independent suspension, and a more reclining and modern driving position. Prerogatives clarified immediately by Count Mario Revelli, working together with engineer Rodolfo Schaeffer, when Fiat asked him to apply his "aerodynamic idea" to a mid-size car. He, competent technician, replied that it wasn't merely a matter of style and shape, but it was necessary to rethink the entire car setup from scratch, to avoid a partial result like in the Chrysler Airflow: aesthetically innovative but absolutely conventional in mechanics, subjugating aerodynamic needs to its encumbrances. Spring is coming, and with it all its colours. For Fiat as well: here too it was spring, 1956, recognizable by one detail. This is the Mirafiori track, and the models choice was probably more varied than the respective colour choices, even if in reality the range hadn't yet reached its peak offering. It was expanding, and there were still many holes in the market that were being created and needed to be filled, the latest arrival was the 600 Multipla. The point is that, during the first half of the decade, throughout Europe the traffic was still made up of monochrome cars with "dull" hues: it's obviously just a matter of taste, given that in reality I prefer them and find them more classy. However, no great flights of fancy were attempted except for the Fuoriserie, and the severe shades ranged from black to greys, not silver, burgundy, brown, beige, white, blue and very little else. Obviously all pastel, not metallic. Even from this photo it's possible to see the colours homogeneity, with one very striking exception which is that 1400, somewhere between powder pink and mustard. 1956 is the first Fiat year in which the colour range begins to follow the new, more courageous and "American" fashions, so if the cheaper models begin to take on lighter and brighter shades, the two-tone started in '54 with the 1100TV (however discreet, because body and pillars were of the same colour, except for the top of the roof) characterizes the mid-to-higher range, now divided into three side bands, with a selection which in some cases was truly eye-catching (last pics), like mint, coral or hazelnut. Affecting momentarily Alfa Romeo too, especially the 1900TI. Underdog shines through. 70 years ago a Topolino was enough to race and feel like a champion. Not that this meant having an easy life, quite the opposite, because an engine like that, at least as standard, wasn't very suitable for racing even at the time. Quite low-geared, asthmatic, not always flexible: the first ones developed 13hp, the last ones 16.5, they did what they could. Also considering that other small cars of the same time like the Panhard Dyna X, although more uncomfortable and noisy, were much livelier. This in no way stopped a young Giorgio Micaglio from racing with this one, like many other chaps like him, filling local, regional and national events with 500A, B and C. Between 1952/54 he won many regularity and hillclimb races throughout Veneto, often ahead of more powerful cars, making the most of his own. At '53 Bolzano-Mendola he had maybe eaten too much, there were more hairpin bends than usual or steeper roads...somehow his Topolino snorted and struggled to climb, until a friend of him decided to remove the spare wheel and a few other parts to save weight, against the regulation. Upon arrival no one notices its absence, although a zealous inspector begins to keep an eye on him, until a tire goes flat in the car park. Fiat 125, one of the world's fastest cars...actually not for the performance (even if it was very good), but for the speed of development of its project: in total less than 15 months, unthinkable even with today's technology ! Tasty package, excellent value for money and that strong funky feeling of 1967, but secretly it was a patchwork of recycled pieces...with excellent taste, undoubtedly. The point is that the 124 presentation in early-1966 moved Fiat's mid-range segmentation downwards: more spacious but also cheaper than the 1300/1500 that it would have replaced, but it was a 1200cc. Since the development of top-of-the-range 130 was in progress, a monstrous gap appeared because, contrary to what some of the management thought, 6-cylinder 1800 and 2300 could no longer represent a valid support due to their age. Engineer Gaudenzio Bono, Fiat CEO, asks Dante Giacosa to perform a miracle: create an intermediate, roomier than the 124. Debut: end of 1966. Impossible. But talent reigns supreme. Aurelio Lampredi brings the 1438cc twincam of the 124 Sport to 1608, Giacosa recovers the elongated platform of the 1500C + 124 centre body/pillars unit and reinserts the rear leaf springs instead of Adolfo Messori's bouncy coils, which had the upper hand for the 124. Gian Paolo Boano at Centro Stile, to proceed more quickly meanwhile road testing went on, skips the preliminary phase with the plaster maquettes and works directly on the sheet metal of the 124, lengthening and widening it, adding 4 modern square headlights, bonnet crests and much more trim inside and out compared to the starting base.
