We are preparing for our annual Fête d’Armand Marquiset, which celebrates our French Founder and the spirit of friendship. Just doing a few last minute things--like packing up fresh rolls and butter for home delivered meals--before volunteers show up to pick up meals and celebration bags to take to older adults around the city for visits all afternoon long. We're often asked what is "Food Rescue". Many food companies and restaurants have surplus, miss marked or denied items that have for one reason or another. These items typically get trashed and end up in a landfills. Fight2Feed has been actively playing a role in reducing food waste since 2015 and thanks to venue partners like McCormick Place and Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly Chicago we now rescue and repurpose food an average of 25,000 - 30,000 pounds of food every week. Check out a few of our amazing food rescue items in the last week. Why should we be concerned about food waste? "Nineteen million tons of waste is landfilled in Illinois every year. Food waste accounts for as much as 20 percent of that 19 million tons, which is more than any other single waste stream found in landfills. When food waste decomposes, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap radiation in the Earth’s atmosphere, which gradually raises the average temperature." - Illinois Environmental Protection Agency That's just one state. Imagine is this statistic multiplied by 50. This is an alarming number. To date Fight2Feed has rescued almost 5 million pounds of food, shared over 3 million pounds of food and cooked and served over one million meals all while remaining 100% volunteer run, managed and operated. Fight2Feed kitchen was #Googled yesterday with 72 #Googlers! We prepared for our weekend’s 700+ meals from bread pudding to icing donated cupcakes to making lasagna rolls from scratch and more! Together we created some delicious meals. But it got better! The team helped us get two organizing projects done. There are so many high lights and here are a few images to show our work. It was all about the prepping the turkeys yesterday. Our volunteers rocked the house and knocked out 130 turkeys yesterday! 30 more to go today and we deploys 900 of our 1600 meals today. Every year around the Thanksgiving holiday, BluSky employees participate in acts of community service as a team, location by location, nationwide. It's our annual Day of Giving 💙 We are so passionate about giving back to our communities in a meaningful way. Our Chicago team recently volunteered their time to help cook and prepare meals for Fight2Feed - which will feed 400 homeless individuals. The additional prep work our group completed will contribute to Fight2Feed's Thanksgiving initiative to help 2,000 homeless in the Chicago area! On October 24, @Fight2Feed shared an afternoon with the @proStart students from @Roosevelt CPS HS in the @mcCormickplace kitchen. We prepped for the Fight2Feed upcoming 500 weekly meals, and they created a delicious family meal to share. Even our kitchen mates @UHCHI instructor Chef Victor Martinez was able to speak with the students about continuing culinary education with Unite Here Hospitality School It was our first of 4 CPS HS ProStart groups, and we had a fantastic experience. Happy 10th Anniversary @fight2feed ! Ten Years ago today. At this time 7:35am on 10/13/2014 we were on the streets and encampments at uptown Chicago serving 1,004 meals to our hungry friends in need. This was our first mission. This is where we leaped together to serve alongside passionate hearts and be the change we wanted to see. Where else would we begin but in the kitchen at @hrcchicago . The 2014 staff was not only amazing to be in the kitchen at 4am, they truly represented the hearts of who we would be come today. It’s amazing to see we are 10 years in serving. Still volunteer run and operated. Over 4.3 millions pounds of food rescued Over 3 millions pounds of food shared Over 1.6 millions meals served. Over 500,000 pantry bags shared Still from borrowed spaces and kitchens to cook, rescue and serve. We don’t have one kitchen, we have every kitchen that will share with us. We get by with a lot of help from our friends! We celebrate National Non-Profit Day with much gratitude! @Fight2Feed has continued to make a difference with sweat equity for over nine years now!
