I always get nervous when meeting with elders of the various tribes we have stayed with whether it be a more political position, like a chief, or in this case, spiritual leader like the Mamo. Today was no different. However, we happen to arrive just after the Mamo, but right before his wife. Our timing afforded us the opportunity to witness a very cool moment as his face lit up when he noticed her and their kids coming to join him. We were invited to ask any question we had which gave me the opportunity to not only learn more about these fascinating people, but to dig deeper into the sea shell pigment I was hoping to obtain. We learned that the process of turning the shells into powder was a closed religious practice that we would not be able to witness let alone film, but that we would be able to obtain the powder itself and that this powder would be blessed by the Mamo himself. At the close of our time with him, the Mamo offered us an open invitation to return to their village in the future and a blessing of protection until we do in the form of a thin bracelet that he tied onto our wrists. Every time Mary and I find a pigment opportunity in some remote place across the globe, I get this rush of emotion. But my heart really starts to race when I begin to learn about the people. I obsess about learning the traditions, their religious beliefs, and every aspect of their culture that I learn about ahead of time. Mary worked her magic and through a labyrinth of contacts found this village, Munknoweenaha. They had not had visitors in over two years. One of the first things we learned is that The Kogi theme their villages based around stages of life. This particular village is mainly comprised of families with children. I am an abstract painter traveling the world full-time in search of ancient pigments. I live with and learn from the tribes and people groups who use these pigments in their spiritual practices, ritual body painting, and textiles. Because of these experiences, each color, whether botanical or mineral, is precious. My painting process however, is not. It is a deliberate attempt to remove my hand, my vision, my voice, my ego from the resulting piece. When we arrived in Fez, there was a familiarity to it, in that it had much the same feel as Marrakech. The two main differences are that where Marrakech is flat, Fez is a city built on hills, which made for tired legs. The other main difference between Fez and Marrakech is that Fez is home to the largest leather tanneries in Morocco, three to be exact. We visited the largest of them, the Chouara Tannery. When we entered the tannery, they handed us sprigs of mint to hold over our noses to help combat the smell. We got to watch as the local leather workers created their pieces before shopping a three-story shop filled with their work. Our latest video is up. We started this pigment hunting adventure in Tarifa, Spain, where we caught a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and to Tangier. Our final goal is to find the pigment used to coat the walls of Morocco’s blue city, Chefchaouen, which is only a couple of hours away. However, we decided to take the long way around the country to see four different souks, what we would call street markets, in four different Moroccan cities, each with its own unique look, culture, and feel. Chefchaouen is commonly known as the blue city of Morocco, and the pigment that makes that city blue is precisely why we visited. We found a shopkeeper that would sell us the first pigment we needed to achieve Chefchaouen blue, Indigo. While he didn’t have the final pigment himself, Cobalt, he recommended another shop that could provide us with it. The paintings I created from our time in the souks of Morocco are not only infused with the raw blue pigment we collected in Chefchaouen. But with our time spent with the Amazigh rug maker in Marrakech, our amazing time with the people of the Berber Market of Amizmiz, and our time spent in the market and tannery of Fez. We started this pigment hunting adventure in Tarifa, Spain, where we caught a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar and to Tangier. Our final goal is to find the pigment used to coat the walls of Morocco’s blue city, Chefchaouen, which is only a couple of hours away. When we arrived in Fez, there was a familiarity to it, in that it had much the same feel as Marrakech. The two main differences are that where Marrakech is flat, Fez is a city built on hills, which made for tired legs. The other main difference between Fez and Marrakech is that Fez is home to the largest leather tanneries in Morocco, three to be exact. We visited the largest of them, the Chouara Tannery. When we entered the tannery, they handed us sprigs of mint to hold over our noses to help combat the smell. We got to watch as the local leather workers created their pieces before shopping a three-story shop filled with their work. Our latest video is up.
