Filming of Pork Chop Hill began on 19 May 1958 through to early August 1958 in the San Fernando Valley, California, followed by retakes in early November 1958 at Samuel Goldwyn Studios. Half way through the month and half way through my Gregory Peck recommendations. We leave the Wild West for the battlefields of the Korean War. 1959's Pork Chop Hill was directed by Lewis Milestone (Of Mice and Men) and written by James R. Webb (How the West Was Won). Alongside Peck, it stars George Shibata (Hell to Eternity), Woody Strode (Spartacus), Norman Fell (Bullitt), George Peppard (Breakfast at Tiffany's), and James Edwards (Home of the Brave). It's 1953 and the end of the Korean War is approaching. Negotiations between the North/Chinese and South/America have hit a stalemate. So Lt. Joe Clemons (Peck) is put under orders to take an enemy encampment on Pork Chop Hill. Heavily outnumbered and lacking supplies and reinforcements, Clemons must rally his men to face and overcome relentless obstacles as his superiors refuse to send help or authorize a retreat. Pork Chop Hill is a true war film. It doesn't romanticize anything and is a straight forward depiction of the brutality and often futility of war. Shot in black and white, the cinematography adds to the feeling of desolation on the enemy hill. With the real Clemons working as a technical advisor and strict attention to detail, the film is one of the more realistic depictions of a historical battle. Peck is oustanding in a role that sees him leave the charm behind for a gruff persona as the hardened, but dependable Clemons. The growing frustration and weariness on his face and in his voice seems genuine. What especially works well in this role is Peck's ability to simultaneously portray a commanding yet amicable nature. A great showcase of his talent in a movie everyone should see. 4.5/5
