The Government of Alberta wants to hear from Albertans about how students should use cellphones in schools. In Alberta and in many other places across the world, student cellphone use is increasing. For children and youth, it typically becomes more prevalent as students advance through the grades. Teachers may occasionally use cellphones in classrooms for learning and teaching purposes. There are many other reasons a student may use a cellphone within school hours, including: -Communicating about practices/rehearsals for school organizations (teams, clubs, etc.), -Checking transit schedules, -Staying in touch with families about issues or emergencies. However, there are concerns that cellphones can be a distraction in educational environments and can sometimes be used inappropriately within classrooms and schools. The Government of Alberta wants to hear from all Albertans, including parents, guardians, teachers and other education professionals. EW Pratt High School hosted High Prairie School Division's 6th annual Pakisiwin (Hand Games) Tournament yesterday! The EW Pratt High School Chargers won first place in the junior/senior category, and the Joussard School Lakers won first place in the elementary category. Congratulations to the winning teams and to all our students for their hard work and commendable sportsmanship. This version of hand games was passed on to Elder Herman Sutherland by the Dene people, and he has helped to guide all student teams. Hand games is an intricate, fast-paced game requiring quick hand-eye coordination and astute skill. Paralleling the Arctic Winter Games rules, players use four different hand signals to try and outsmart the opposing team’s captain, who must guess who is holding a small object and in which hand. Thank you to EW Pratt High School for hosting this year’s tournament; you all did a great job! Thank you to our drummers and referees: Elder Herman Sutherland, Elder Priscilla Sutherland, Russell Cardinal, and Herman Sutherland Jr. Thank you to our Indigenous Education Team and team coaches for your work in planning and preparing for this great event. Pratt High School since November 2022, brings an extensive background in mathematics education and leadership to this key role. Hillary's academic credentials are impressive, with a Master of Science in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University, a Bachelor's in Education with a focus on Mathematics from the University of the West Indies, and a Diploma in Teaching, specializing in Mathematics and Social Studies, from MICO Teachers' College. Her diverse educational background has provided her with a comprehensive understanding of numeracy education, which will be instrumental in her new position. On March 25, High Prairie School Division hosted a collaborative Wildfire Tabletop Exercise aimed at fostering proactive communication and strategizing among participating organizations in the face of potential wildfire events. Participants included Holy Family Catholic Regional Division, Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council Education Authority, Living Waters Separate School Division, and Northland School Division. This group effort involved identifying and sharing resources, strategic planning, and standardizing processes for messaging, busing, and operations in wildfire alert and/or evacuation scenarios. Eight teams of Junior High students across the division participated in the yearly STEM competition. They were tasked with creating a Rube Goldberg machine where the final task was to pop a balloon. Different simple machines, time, and successful attempts were a part of the criteria of the challenge. Even though each group had access to the same materials, their creativity and ingenuity shone. Some students had this to say about their day: "C'est bon de travailler avec les autres." Another student exclaimed "I love it. I am a science person!" High Prairie School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Kienan Wilson as the new Supervisor of Human Resources, effective in the 2024-25 school year. Mr. Wilson, who has been serving as the principal of Joussard School since September 2022, will embark on this two-year term position, bringing a wealth of experience and dedication to his new role. Kienan Wilson has been an integral part of the High Prairie School Division since 2017, demonstrating strong leadership and commitment to educational excellence. Prior to his role at Joussard School, he served as Vice Principal at Prairie River Junior High School and Joussard School. Mr. Wilson holds a Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies with honours from York University. He is currently completing his Master of Education in Leadership from the University of Calgary. In his new role as Supervisor of Human Resources, Mr. Wilson will be responsible for a broad range of functions, including human resources leadership, management, budgeting, policy/administrative procedures, organizational management, communications, and community relations. We would like to thank our Indigenous Education Team, and in particular Sharon Gauchier and Carrie McGillivray, for all their efforts in helping to organize Roland Michener Secondary School's inaugural Round Dance. Coach Sharon Gauchier further said, “Also, a huge thank you to everyone that lent a helping hand in any way and took the time to come and stop in on Saturday.” There were many volunteers, and the school’s Youth Council for Reconciliation (YCR) ran the canteen and helped out in other ways throughout the event. They are very proud and happy with how the event went, and have received many compliments about how guests felt taken care of and are excited to see more events like this take place at Roland Michener School. A particularly poignant moment from the evening was when student Owen Badger-Ward demonstrated unwavering dedication by continuously assisting the drummers. His commitment did not go unnoticed, as one of the local Elders, a revered drum maker, stepped forward to recognize Owen and his family. In a touching gesture, the Elder praised Owen’s dedication and presented him with one of his own drums, marking a truly beautiful and unforgettable moment. Such acts of recognition and unity exemplify the spirit of community and collaboration that we strive to foster at Roland Michener School. Congratulations to Brooke Evans on her successful completion of the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) in Welding. Brooke was very determined in grade 10 to start her apprenticeship as soon as she turned 16. She has worked her required 1000 hours and earned 40 credits towards her high school diploma. Next year Brooke will attend her first year of technical training for welding and continue working on her 2nd year hours while completing her last year of high school courses. Increased access to technology has contributed to an increase in cyberbullying. This newer form of bullying is unique in that its effects are far-reaching and can occur 24 hours a day, even when students are at home. There is no safe zone. Grade 7-12 students from Kinuso School had the opportunity to participate in a two-day community learning event hosted by Swan River First Nation. This event focused on teaching students how to prepare and serve a traditional feast, and students from both Kinuso School and Swan River School were invited to attend. Students enjoyed sharing knowledge and stories and interacting with the Elders from their community. The girls helped to prepare beef stew, moose nose, tongue and heart, bannock, berries, and laboom (wild mint) tea. A pipe ceremony was held before the meal, and the boys served the food to everyone seated together in the circle.
