A work crew recently completed brush work on our trail project at Buffalo Pound Provincial Park. Thanks to PADC Management Co. for their hard work on clearing brush and trees on the south side of the existing bison compound. This is part of a project to reroute 2,380m of Trans Canada Trail (TCT) off the road to adjacent land. Mountaineering in Antarctica was like nothing I’ve ever done before 🏔️ 🥾 🧤 🪓 Anyone can mountaineer. Our mountaineering guides were very encouraging and had the highest certification. I specifically bought special boots from @rei to make sure I could do a ‘challenging’ climb that required crampons, even though I had never mountaineered before. Once onboard, the guides give a lecture explaining what mountaineering is and how accessible it is. After that, they check your shoes to make sure they are crampon compatible. If they aren’t, no worries - you can still mountaineer with the muck boots provided, they will attach snowshoes. Before your climb, the guides put my harness on, fit my crampons, and gave me a helmet and ice axe. Mountaineers are the first off the boat, so you need to be ready to go once the zodiacs are ready. I ended up going on the first day, in the afternoon. The morning group (pictured in some photos) was the most challenging climb, and all of them had both prior experience and crampon-compatible boots. My climb was for physically fit people who had not mountaineered before but had the proper boots. Our location was Cuverville Island, and we got to nearly go through a penguin colony. We even saw some chicks near the top. It got a little foggy and cloudy in the afternoon, so we didn’t see the summit when we started, and once we got high enough, we didn’t even see 10 feet below us. The setup was 2 groups of 1 guide followed by 4 climbers, all together by rope. The hardest thing for me was wearing all the layers, and trying not to overheat. Since you move at a decent pace uphill, your body gets warm. I wasn’t sweating, but the waterproof layers definitely insulate you a bit. It wasn’t extremely challenging, but the guides assess you at the beginning to see if you will be all good on the climb! The somewhat boring scramble up the big hump of Pennsylvania Mountain is rewarded by stunning views toward the mountain range rising to the east of Breckenridge-bound Hwy 9 and across the vast South Mosquito Creek basin lined by Mosquito Range peaks to the north and NW. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a bunch of mining equipment and structures littered across the basin and at the feet of the freestanding 4,000+ m London Mountain. While the former exploitation of this peaceful-looking land irked me, I found the history sprawled out in front of me intriguing. As you hike along the trail, you'll encounter weathered cabins, rusted machinery, and other relics that offer a glimpse into the lives of the miners who once called this area home. But the allure of Mayflower Gulch extends far beyond its historical significance. This trail has something to offer everyone. 🏔️ Location - Mayflower Gulch Trailhead is situated off Highway 91 just south of Copper Mountain. The trailhead is well-marked with parking available though no toilets. 🏔️ Trail Length - The trail is 5.2 mile out and back, making it a relatively short but rewarding hike (you’ll be feeling the elevation). It typically takes around 1.5 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace, trail conditions, and how much time you spend exploring the buildings. 🏔️ Difficulty Level - Mayflower Gulch Trail is considered moderate in difficulty. While the trail itself is relatively easy to navigate, there’s 1548’ of elevation gain, so be prepared for steady incline from the get go. 🏔️ Points of Interest - Along the trail, you’ll pass remnants of old mining structures from the Boston Mine, including cabins, mining equipment, and tailings piles. These historical relics offer a fascinating glimpse into Colorado's mining history and provide excellent photo opportunities. 🏔️ Seasonality - While the trail is accessible year-round, it is particularly popular in the summer and fall months when the weather is mild and the wildflowers are in bloom. In winter, the trail is covered in snowdrifts ideal for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. This time of year, you’ll want traction at minimum with snowshoes necessary after recent snowfall. Additionally, be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially at higher elevations, and always check the avalanche report.

The snowfall late April made it possible to go on a last snowshoe hike in Appenzell on April 27th. We hiked up from Schwägalp to Kronberg and back in great weather and snow, at Chammhaldenhütte the snow depth was even up to the turnstile. ❄️One of the best parts about visiting national parks is the amazing things you can learn from the rangers. We learned a lot about winter ecology.. winters at crater lake are harsh! We experienced cloudy, snowy, windy, 30-something degree weather. We were cold from one day, but the critters there endure the harsh weather all winter long! One bird that stood out to me is the Canada Jay - they get through the winter by stashing away food. Their secret weapon is their saliva, which becomes sticky when exposed to the air. They use it as glue to attach food to tree branches above the snow line so they can eat all winter. Does that blow your mind? Or just mine? 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆 𝑷𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒂 (2.324m), Dolomiti 🗻🤍 Un luogo stupendo con una grande storia, che funge da autentica balconata sulle Dolomiti Bellunesi. Escursione interamente con ciaspole e racchette da neve grazie al meteo veramente insolito del periodo, tantissima la neve fresca sul sentiero. Vista a 360 gradi dai Cadini di Misurina, al gruppo del Cristallo, alla Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo ed ovviamente alle Tre Cime di Lavaredo con la cima Ovest in primo piano. Il monte Piana fu teatro durante la prima guerra mondiale di uno scontro durato oltre due anni tra il Regio Esercito e l'esercito austro-ungarico ed oggi è un vero e proprio "museo all'aperto" dove è possibile visitare il campo di battaglia situato in tutta la sua sommità. Bushcraft Snowshoes There’s not much snow left in these hills. I took the opportunity to repair my Roycraft Snowshoes. After a lot of use, the bindings and knots tend to loosen up. Now they are they are ready to go for next season. Time to enjoy spring and summer! ☀️
