The previously thought lost pallet of diy and patio furniture has arrived! I’m ready to start my projects again. Next job for me is paint all the skirting board ready for sinclair to fit in our bedroom, en-suite and the open living area. Then we’ll (he’ll) fit the guttering to collect that oh so precious rainwater (which we’re still waiting for). Aaaaannd our outdoor dining furniture has arrived! And the glass made the journey in one piece. So now we can eat al fresco and drink our wine in the evening sunshine. Yay!

Week 46 was the end of our contracted build timeframe. Did we finish? Absolutley not. There is still SO MUCH to do, which is such a shame given we were 6 weeks ahead of schedule at one point. This week also came with the news that (despite it being when our home was supposed to be finished) Hudson was changing their supplier for the stone benchtops. Given we were so far into the process we thought that we would be safe, as we assumed the order for out stone would have been put in many months prior. We were not. So it was off to the new supplier to reselect our benchtops. It was quite dissapointing overall, we loved our original stone and lets just say the reselection did not go smoothly. We do need to call out those from Hudson who helped get it over the line; Stef, Nectar, and Larissa. At least this week brought a little more than just the sad faces of not finishing on time, we were able to coordinate a site visit with our SS Nectar who has been so helpful in all of this. Being inside our home seeing the changes with a formal inspection is so nice. We have used some of the photos in previous posts to show some of the work that was done since our last time in the actual house. Did this week have some disappointing features? Yes. Are we ready to move on and look at the positives? Also yes. We have a beautiful home in the works and can see the quality in what has been done so far. Today marks 6 months since we left the UK to follow our hearts and begin a new life in the Bahamas. We took our cat Cordelia and a suitcase each containing a few clothes, essential food stuffs (Yorkshire teabags, oxo and marmite) some painting supplies, work boots and our old cat’s ashes. All of our furniture and belongings joined us about a month later at the same time that our house was ready to move in to. Within days of arriving we’d made new friends and were introduced to the neighbourhood - we’ve met some amazing people who are and always will be firm friends. Within weeks we were singing - badly - at the top of our voices at karaoke nights. Who are we and what happened to our uptight Britishness?!? Within just a few months we feel more at home here than anywhere else. Cordelia is thriving and has slowed down even more than her previously lazy self! Sinclair is even more of a diy genius now and has done so much around the house (any excuse to use power tools!) and is always ready for a trip to the beach after a days hard work. He’s embraced his beach bum dream. I’m still learning to slow down and relax - to take everything at ‘island time’ pace. And now working to make our garden a little haven that I can proudly show off to garden club when it resumes later this year. Life is slower, hotter and just better!! We knew we’d be happy but I cannot describe how incredibly amazing this life is. The years of hard work, saving and turning this dream into a reality have certainly been worth it. We love our life here. Here’s to forever!
The forecast for new private housebuilding projects over the next year has improved in recent months. Following some difficult years in 2023, a predicted ripple from coronavirus, the industry is expected to have better times ahead, especially in the North and the Midlands, according to a number of positive industry surveys and major housebuilders' statements recorded earlier in the year. The whole housing market has benefited from recent drops in mortgage rates as well as the possibility of more interest rate reductions in the coming months. According to the most recent RICS UK residential survey in February, there's an optimistic increase in buyer inquiries and new listings. 17 April Unfortunately the sealant recommended for our concrete slab failed dismally. The slab was prepped properly and the instructions were followed however the sealant left a brown, sticky residue all over the slab that wouldn’t come off. Kel scrubbed on his hands and knees for hours with all manner of cleaning fluids and scrubbing brushes all to no avail. He spoke to the manufacturer and they said that this had never happened before and their only suggestion was to use an alcohol base to dissolve it. Kel tried this and while it removed most of the stickiness, the brown stains remained. This is a major setback as nothing could be installed in the rest of the house until the slab was sealed, which we were hoping to get done, however not only is the slab not sealed, it’s basically wrecked and to fix it we’re thinking our only option is to grind the top layer off. And yes, Kel did a large test patch before attempting the majority of the slab and it was fine. I spent last weekend fitting the utility room with a handy mate. Just the plinth and handles remain, but I will fit those once the plumber has fitted the sink and the electrician has fitted the wiring centre for the under floor heating inside the cupboard. It was relatively straight forward with a few exceptions... The cupboard containing the underfloor heating manifold had to be butchered to fit around the manifold. I had to build a base to raise the washing machine off the floor to fill the gap between the appliances and the cupboard above. The two wall cupboards are not actually attached to the wall as to align them to the front of the tower unit in the middle, there is a void behind them - instead they are secured to the tower cupboard on one side and the studs behind the walls on the other side. ° S T O C K F O R D C H I L D R E N ° Hi ♡ Thought I would say hello. This is us...when we aren't digging and building which has been a huge part of our life for the past 7 months. It's exhausting. With and without the children. I feel incredibly guilty for moving them into the unbuilt, unfinished and unknown...but they have been absolutely fantastic. They have helped. They have given input into the future "look" of their rooms and they have had to minimise all their stuff and all their space. It will be worth it. This is for them ♡
