✨️ En 1910, durante los festejos del Centenario de la Revolución de Mayo, fue inaugurado un nuevo edificio comunal en donde hoy se encuentra el Centro Cívico. El enorme edificio lindaba con el templo parroquial y forma parte de muchas postales antiguas de la ciudad. Ubicado en la esquina de Boulevard Del Valle (58) y la calle Angel I. Murga (61), tuvo, según posteriores estudios realizados por arquitectos locales, un estilo italianizante, con detalles de categoría en su fachada y en su equipamiento interior. De acuerdo a una publicación realizada años atrás por la Asociación Patrimonio Necochea, el edificio de la Municipalidad, junto al templo, inaugurado en 1904, y la casa parroquial, «conformaba un paisaje armónico del color de la Piedra París, donde el estilo italianizante en dos plantas con que los arquitectos Icilio Chiocci y José Pastore diseñaron la Municipalidad, combinaba armoniosamente con la iglesia que donó Margarita V. de Pieres y construyó Luis Quadri, donde el neogótico y el románico configuraron el estilo religioso». ✨️ El monumento al general Mariano Pascual Necochea fue construido por el escultor Víctor Jorge Garino, y emplazado sobre su pedestal de la plaza Rocha en 1913. Su construcción se enmarcó en la lista de monumentos que se impulsaran en el país celebración del centenario de la Nación, y se estableció que sería ecuestre y en bronce, con un basamento de granito. Su altura total se convino en seis metros, de los cuales 2,80 metros pertenecerían a la figura de Necochea. Su costo se calculó en $40.000 de la moneda nacional vigente por entonces. La primera fundamental del monumento fue colocada en 25 de mayo de 1910. La fundición del monumento la efectuó Alejo Joris y al bronce de fundición se le agregó parte de un cañón de la guerra de la Independencia. En principio se había otorgado al escultor Garino un plazo de 18 meses para terminar la obra, que culminaba en marzo de 1912. Sin embargo retrasos en los pagos en cuotas de sus honorarios y los de Joris, generaron que recién fuera instalado a mediados de 1913. To add to that, this weekend we commemorate Memorial Day. Sadly, for many, the day has become more about a long weekend and less about remembering and honoring our fallen soldiers. Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance for those who died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers. However, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York the “birthplace” of Memorial Day since they held a ceremony on May 5, 1866 honoring local veterans who had fought in the Civil War." While this isn’t my usual type of post, I wanted to share one of the most important trips I’ve ever embarked on. Post October 7th, the Jewish people haven’t had a moment to grieve. We are continuously undergoing immense psychological torture as well as physical harassment. In the beginning I made many donations. I attended rallies, hung up hostage posters, and wrote to senators. But it still didn’t feel like enough. Then I made the life changing decision to volunteer in Israel with the wonderful organization JNF. I had to be back in the land. To dig my fingers through the soil. This was one of the most emotional and meaningful trips I have ever had the honor to join. I helped farm the land, rebuild communities, and listened to survivor’s stories. I heard from the mother of Omer Shem Tov, one of the current hostages. I visited the Nova massacre site, as well as Tkuma- the burnt cars site. We visited the Barzilai Hospital, as well as Nura’s Kitchen- a Druze kosher restaurant, and learned about the integration within the 2 communities. We sang and danced with a special forces unit- one of the first armies to include and support individuals with special needs. We visited Hostage Square, where various artists created powerful interactive exhibits. We planted trees with our bare hands. We visited Ammunition Hill, location of the 6 Day War, and currently a site honoring Jewish combatants around the world. We ended the trip at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Although we were in a country currently at war, there was a sense of calmness. Israeli flags beautifully placed all over. Hostage posters intact. A strong sense of community with all cultures and backgrounds. This is what’s missing in the biased media. Now that I’ve returned to New York, I plan to continue to share all the stories of the amazing speakers I heard from. I hope even a glimpse of this post will inspire all to truly see and hear the truth and resilience of this incredible people. JNF Volunteer Mission, Day 2: The second day of the JNF mission involved sweat and tears. Usually for me, a rake is the villain in a Regency Era drama. But yesterday, I picked one up (maybe for the first time?) and cleared brush in the community of Tzochar, in anticipation of the return of its residents who were evacuated after October 7. It was hard work under the hot sun, but not a single one of us complained. We then went to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon for a briefing with Dr. Ron Lobel, its Director of Emergency and Disaster Management, who described his and his colleagues’ work with compassion and humor, but also with justified anger. This is a region and a country in deep trauma - there is no “post.” From there, we experienced further the open wound that is Israel right now, paying our respects at the site of the Nova music festival, where more than three hundred people were slaughtered. This was not my first time here: I was here in March, and then, the feelings of loss, pain, and desolation were punctuated by loud artillery booms from IDF soldiers in the Gaza Strip, just a few miles away. I was overwhelmed then and now, looking at the makeshift memorials featuring the faces of so many young, beautiful people and experiencing the familiar feelings of incandescent rage and bottomless grief that have accompanied me for nearly eight months. It seemed unjust that the sun could shine so brightly there. But I had to remind myself that we will dance again, and that we did, later that night, with more young, beautiful people at their IDF base (no pictures, obviously)! It is said that dawn comes, even after the darkest of dark nights. We did not have to wait for dawn for our tears of sadness to become tears of joy. ✨️ En el Día Internacional de los Museos, se llevó a cabo una actividad específica sobre la historia del Museo de Ciencias Naturales, ubicado a pocos metros del Histórico Regional en el Parque. Fue muy positiva la respuesta del público el pasado sábado a la propuesta del Área de Museos, en el marco del Día Internacional de los Museos, mediante una charla sobre la historia del espacio de Ciencias Naturales que se encuentra en el Parque Miguel Lillo, a pocos metros del Regional Histórico. Quienes estuvieron a cargo de la jornada fueron las Licenciadas Valeria Elichiry y Nora Flegenheimer, quienes abordaron la presentación de la historia del Museo de Ciencias Naturales de Necochea desde la conformación de las primeras colecciones que le dieron origen hasta su establecimiento como una institución municipal. Ante la atenta escucha del público participante, las disertantes explicaron el rol de los primeros anticuarios que recorrieron el territorio local a comienzos del s. XX, como Rodolfo Faggioli o Florentino Ameghino. Luego, desarrollaron el rol que tuvo la Primera Asociación de Amigos de las Ciencias Naturales; la posterior conformación del Museo privado, durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970 y cómo se institucionalizó y pasó a sr parte del ámbito municipal desde la década del ‘80. Vale destacar que antes de ello, se aprovechó la jornada para realizar una visita guiada al Museo Histórico Regional, brindada por Mariano Colombo, Doctor en Antropología e investigador miembro del CONICET- Área de Arqueología y Antropología- junto a José Pérez Prina, profesor de Historia parte del equipo del Área de Museos. Countering Active Threat Training (CATT) - ONLINE BY ZOOM Monday - MAY 20 - 7PM The goal of CATT is to provide participants with a better understanding of active threats and potential response options. This course subscribes to the national Run, Hide, Fight model and SCN developed CATT with a singular goal: national delivery of a strategy to teach what to do during a threatening situation, wherever it may occur. May is Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM). This annual celebration, established by President George W. Bush in 2006, provides an opportunity to pay tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who helped weave the fabric of American history, culture, and society.
