Shabbat shalom! This week we continued to celebrate pesach, the Jewish holiday that commemorates the Exodus. On Monday, we conducted the Seder full of tasty and meaningful food, songs, and customs (and also said goodbye to wheat products for a week). But just because we can’t have breadcrumbs and flour, it doesn’t mean we can’t find a way to make schnitzel. Tonight for Shabbat dinner we made chicken schnitzel coated with matzo meal! We are excited because we really amped up this recipe: not only did we coat the chicken in seasonings before dredging, we also seasoned the matzo meal and the egg mixture and added mayo and Dijon mustard to the egg mix. We served the schnitzel with yellow rice, Mediterranean salad, and a non-dairy cardamom white sauce. Hadassah is our chief schnitzel fryer and these were her best ones yet! The schnitzel was so flavorful and savory, still juicy, and wonderfully crisp all over. The secret is to fry them on medium low heat for a perfect crisp. Whether it’s Passover or not, we hope you give these schnitzel a try! It's pouring rain so I arranged for an Uber to pick me up from my #Jewish place of worship where we had just had a disability justice #Seder. The #uber driver cancelled when he was around the corner. Or to put it another way. Once the driver could see it was a Jewish venue and therefore likely also a Jewish rider, he cancelled. I was not going to a far off destination. I did not change my destination. No additional accessibility instructions had been sent. No added communication. But after a 10 min wait and him going 3.5 miles he cancelled. To quote Miss Holmes "A coincidence by nature is unlikely". While it's possible this was not blatant #Antisemitism. It's far more likely the opposite. And yes I am reporting it, especially after a 20+ min delay by the time I got a new driver. I will say that that driver was fantastic. And the Seder was such a delight, a wonderful mix of disabled people and allies. Queer and BIPOC Jewish led to boot and quite diverse. Still the good doesn't erase the bad. And the irony of it taking it place following such an inclusive, safe and affirming event is not lost on me. And for those wondering, Israel is not a part of the event nor present in any sort of signage . But even if it were it's still discrimination.
