(SOLD)—-NEW: Monumental 1960s Italian Faience Orb Lamp; (SOLD)—-Large Modern Color Field Painting, Tami Iams (SOLD)—-Chic 19th c Indian Painted Side Table (SOLD)—-Sculptural Pair of 1980s Teak Klismos Chairs, Michael Taylor One of our favorite lamp models- we’ve only had a couple over the decades. Reminiscent of a neoclassical architectural element or finial. Retrofitted with fancy hardware and this sunny mustard custom linen shade. Painting is done by @tamiiams , a DC artist and all around creative force. Love the hard edge geometry on this one, the unexpected color combination, and the textured impasto surface. But most importantly the focal point scale! Indian table is one of the more elaborate ones we’ve seen of this Raj-period form. Love the ornate carved fretwork in the undulating apron, and all the animal iconography. Great crusty white surface, some breaks and losses throughout though still sturdy and very heavy. Michael Taylor teak chairs are a fairly early example from him and show signs of being used outdoors so have developed a gorgeous patina. Certainly an all time favorite form. Spectacular Regency Faux Rosewood Klismos Chairs after a Design by Thomas Hope. The deeply curved crest rails with carved palmettes to the sides anchored by brass inlay of trailing anthemion (honeysuckle). The seat caned and now with flat squab cushions above curved sabre legs to both front and back. The chairs in beech and very finely inked to simulate rosewood (over 90% of the decoration being original) with brass inlay on the center of the crest rail. Several most beautiful, unrestored "Klismos" chairs, based on a design by Nikolaus von Thouret (1767-1845) or Heinrich Gentz (1766-1811) approx. 1800 for Duke Carl August von Sachsen Weimar Eisenach, Weimar aprox. 1800 solid, carved apple wood Johann Wolfgang von Goethe commissioned at the end of the 18th century the architect Nikolaus von Thouret with the redesign of the facade of his Weimar house on the 'Frauenplan'. Thouret drew plans in the "goût grec" in close coordination with Goethe's ideas, who had carefully studied ancient architecture on his travels through Italy. On a signed and dated drawing by Thouret you can find the motif of the 'running dog' which is exactly reflected in the frame of the chairs. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to determine for which building the chairs were originally designed. Both the Weimar Castle and the "Roman House" (the Duke's private refuge) could be considered.
