Today is #NationalSaveYourHearingDay! Today we are reminded how important it is to take care of and preserve our hearing. Did you know that the workers in Lowell's textile mills had to use pieces of cotton to dull the sounds of the machinery? Although workers were surrounded by noisy machines for 14 hours a day, 6 days a week, they were not given anything to protect their ears. Cotton just wouldn't cut it, and many experienced hearing loss or deafness later in life. Today, our weave room staff run fewer machines and wear earplugs to protect themselves and our visitors! #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory NPS Photo

If you visited the Suffolk Mill in the past several weeks, you may have noticed that our turbine has been out of commission due to a blockage. Thanks to hard work from park maintenance staff, we are excited to announce that the turbine will be back up and running soon! The culprit? An aluminum baseball bat that caused a jam. Staff removed the bat and installed brand new trash racks. These grates stop garbage and other debris from entering the penstock and getting into the turbine drum. A big thank you to the park maintenance team for their work in preserving the turbine for the future and ensuring that visitors can enjoy it today. You can see the turbine running soon on one of our Suffolk Mill Tours-- for more information visit https://go.nps.gov/v9o5e6. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory NPS Photo

179 years ago today, the Voice of Industry printed its first issue. Written in part by the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association (LFLRA), the magazine provided a column where women workers could contribute their thoughts on labor, politics and collective action. Sarah Bagley, a mill girl from Lowell and labor leader, was among its first editors! Now in the public domain, full copies of the Voice of Industry are available for free at https://www.industrialrevolution.org/. You can also read more about the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association and Sarah Bagley here: https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/lflra.htm. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory Image Curtesy the Voice of Industry

Lowell National Historical Park is lucky to have so many of the original buildings from its industrial past still standing to admire and help envision how the city looked. But, we can also find stories in the buildings that are no longer here. One of these buildings that was crucial to the operations of the mills, The Lowell Machine Shop, no longer stands. The large gate that led into the shop's yard is one of the only remnants left by this building. The Lowell Machine Shop was located near the Swamp Locks Gatehouse and you now must look closely to find the traces that this building existed at all. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory

Just after WW1, in 1922, Lowell erected the Lowell Memorial Auditorium to serve as a memorial to honor Lowell veterans of all wars. Around the exterior are the names of the battles in which Lowellians have fought and died, as well as numerous other monuments and flags dedicated to the veterans of Lowell. Since 1922, Lowell Memorial Auditorium has often served as a focal point for Memorial Day celebrations, but even now, citizens and veterans still gather at the cemeteries each year to honor and remember the deceased, as has been done since 1868. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #MemorialDay Photo Credits: Cemetaries: Lowell Historical Society Honor Roll: NPS Image Memorial Auditorium: Historic New England

Memorial Day officially began as Decoration Day in 1868, to honor the Union soldiers who had fallen in the American Civil War. Even in those early days, Lowell would have had many to remember, and to mourn, as nearly 500 had perished in the conflict. Veteran's Organizations such as the Grand Army of the Republic frequently organized events and invited veterans to speak on the occasion. At the time, the cemeteries of Lowell and the Ladd and Whitney Monument served as the primary places of memorialization. In addition to monuments for the fallen, Lowell would work to honor the fallen with parades through the downtown area. A recently discovered photo from 1888 shows one such parade marching down Merrimack Street. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #MemorialDay NPS Image: ACC 480

Did you guess the answer to our Scavenger Hunt riddle? Bricks are a common building material in the Lowell mills. Billions of bricks were used in construction of the city, and other mill towns all over New England. The first evidence of bricks dates back to 7000 B.C. They have been made of various materials and have been used throughout the world. The first brick kiln in the United States was built in Salem, Massachusetts in 1629. @salemmaritimenps may have older bricks, but they don't have as many as Lowell National Historical Park! #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalScavengerHuntDay NPS Photo

Did you guess the answer to our Scavenger Hunt riddle? Our trolleys are a wonderful way to experience Lowell National Historical Park. The Lowell Horse Railroad Company was the first generation of streetcars in 1864, utilizing 100% horsepower. The horse-drawn streetcar was upgraded in 1893 with the advent of electric operated cars. While our trolleys only service a small portion of the city to visit places in the park, they are a reminder of Lowell’s “Golden Era” of industrialization. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalScavengerHuntDay NPS Photo

Did you guess the answer to our riddle? Bobbins are loaded into shuttles that pass back and forth on a loom. They provide the weft thread in a piece of woven cloth. In the early days of the industrial revolution, operators would replace bobbins in the shuttle by hand, but by the turn of the 20th century, the bobbin battery would automatically discard an empty bobbin and load a full one in a matter of seconds. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalScavengerHuntDay NPS Photos

As Preservation Month gears up, sponsored nationally by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, here's a little background on the origins of preservation in Lowell. The roots of Lowell's efforts date to community activism in the 1960s, efforts by the Lowell City Council and planning department in the early 1970s, and many individuals including educator Patrick Mogan and Congressman Paul Tsongas that ultimately led to the establishment of the Lowell Heritage State Park (1975) and the Lowell National Historical Park (1978). Since those early days, $1 billion in development activity has taken place downtown while 98% of 5.2 million square feet of mill space has been rehabilitated with more projects underway and on the drawing board. Link in our bio for more information on Lowell’s preservation history. Demolitions in the 1950s and 1960s helped focus community interest and planning efforts on preserving Lowell’s historic and cultural assets. Historic districts were created while in an early preservation victory, demolition of the Wentworth Building (1845) on Merrimack Street for a proposed parking lot was blocked in 1976. Early preservation projects included the Southwick Block (1879) on Prescott Street while State park information kiosks helped direct visitors. #lowell #lowellma #likelowell #lowellhistory #historiclowell #merrimackvalley #massachusetts #lowellnps #findyourpark #preservation #historicpreservation #savingplaces #architecture #historicarchitecture #lowellarchitecture #historicbuildings #historicdistrict #historicdowntown #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #nps #nationalhistoriclandmark #mainstreet #economicdevelopment #historictaxcredits #preservationmonth

It's May which means it's time for Preservation Month! Established in 1973 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as National Preservation Week, the celebration was extended to the entire month of May in 2005. Preservation Month is co-sponsored by local municipal preservation groups like the Lowell Historic Board, historical societies, state and national nonprofits and government agencies, and business and civic organizations. During Preservation Month, many events are planned to promote historic places for the purpose of instilling national and community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and illustrating the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. #lowell #lowellma #likelowell #lowellhistory #historiclowell #merrimackvalley #massachusetts #lowellnps #findyourpark #preservation #historicpreservation #savingplaces #architecture #historicarchitecture #lowellarchitecture #historicbuildings #historicdistrict #historicdowntown #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #nps #nationalhistoriclandmark #mainstreet #economicdevelopment #historictaxcredits #preservationmonth

Happy #JuniorRangerDay! Being a park ranger requires lifelong learning and a passion to share what we learn with visitors. A great way to learn about national parks is through the Junior Ranger Program. We encourage people of all ages to complete both junior ranger programs offered here. Here are stories from some of our own rangers completing junior ranger programs and learning about national parks. 1. I spent a lot of time in national parks as a kid. It was always a highlight going to the Utah national parks for spring break. I have great memories of ranger lead campfire programs, and hikes. There are a lot of other great memories of interactions with rangers from our trips that I will never forget. Those rangers, and learning about our national parks definitely had an impact on me, and pursuing a career as a park ranger. 2. The summer before I went to high school my family took a 3 week road trip in the Western part of the US. We went to many National Parks (and many historic sites, roadside attractions, and other oddities). Whenever I think back on that trip, I think about how those National Park visits were amazing because of the resources and experiences, but the most important part was that we experienced it together as a family. I hope that we at LOWE always strive to make the experiences memorable and enjoyable for the whole family and continue to inspire the next generations of stewards. 3. I didn't discover National Parks until I was in college and got a summer internship in a National Park. At that point, I was hooked on the National Park Service. Over the years, I've completed several Junior Ranger programs as an adult. Here is a picture of me and two friends being sworn in as Junior Rangers at the Statue of Liberty. 4. I became a Junior Ranger at Saguaro National Park. They had a yearly day camp that you could participate in to learn about desert ecology and how to better care for our planet. Looking back, I think these camps influenced my want to become a park ranger when I grew up! #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalParkWeek

What does it take to run a National Park in the heart of downtown Lowell? The Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP) Superintendent’s Office does more than just manage the park’s staff, buildings, and budget. They also work with LNHP’s partners, including the City of Lowell, University of Massachusetts Lowell, and other state, community, and regional organizations. LNHP is unique in its partner-driven management: the park and its partners work together to preserve Lowell’s historical resources, and support economic growth through collaborative programming. Without our partners, LNHP couldn’t do everything that we do, and we’re happy to support the city and the community of Lowell. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalParkWeek NPS Photos

As the weather changes, you may start to notice the climate controlled areas of our park as you step in and out of buildings. And while the comfort of both visitors and employees inside our spaces is important, there is much more that goes into keeping up with indoor climates. The utilities crew at Lowell works year round to make sure that exhibit spaces are kept at proper temperatures and help mitigate any leaks or disasters that may arise from working in historic spaces. Recently, the Utilities crew has begun the long and arduous project of updating and replacing the temperature controlling units in park buildings. This massive undertaking will help not only protect the resources, employees, and visitors around the park from temperature shifts, but also will help save energy and be more eco-friendly in the long run. This is just one of the many ways this team looks out for our park and our planet! #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalParkWeek

What about going on a field trip and eating lunch at a squeaky-clean table? Well, you have our custodial division to thank! This hardworking team is responsible for maintaining the clean, healthy environments that workers in the Lowell Mills fought for! Introducing Lowell National Historical Park’s volunteer management team! This small team works collaboratively to organize outreach events and educational programs aimed at fostering meaningful engagement with local communities. The Boott Cotton Mills Museum Weave Room gives you the opportunity to experience what the weave room of a cotton mill in the early 1900s might have looked, sounded, and felt like. Our demonstrations of historic equipment wouldn’t be possible without our Weave Room staff. They do much more than safely weaving cloth on looms that are over a hundred years old! They also maintain historic equipment, set up the looms to weave, troubleshoot stopped looms, and repair any problems. You can see this amazing team in action for free today at the Boott Cotton Mills Museum! #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NPSWeek NPS Photos

It’s Throwback Thursday and since it’s National Library Week, here’s a look back at the history of Lowell’s library. The first City library in the United States, founded in 1844, today it’s known as the Pollard Memorial Library. Founded on May 20, 1844 by the Lowell City Council, Lowell’s library opened on February 11, 1845 in Old City Hall at the corner of Merrimack and Shattuck streets. In 1873, having outgrown its space in Old City Hall, the library moved down Merrimack Street to rented space on the second floor of the Hosford Building on Merrimack Street. The present home of Lowell’s library for over 130 years is one of Lowell’s most prominent institutional buildings. Designed by Stickney, Memorial Hall/Pollard Memorial Library (1893) on Merrimack Street was dedicated in 1893 as a memorial to the soldiers and sailors of Lowell who lost their lives in the Civil War. The early seal for the Lowell library was created by William Paul, a designer at the Hamilton Manufacturing Company Print Works, who produced 12 concept designs. The seal bears the name of the library, the date of its establishment, an ancient lamp in a style of one found in the ruins of Pompeii, the flame of which heads toward the motto, “Fiat Lux” (Let There Be Light). It was engraved by Messers. Mitchell of Boston. #lowell #lowellma #likelowell #lowellhistory #historiclowell #merrimackvalley #massachusetts #lowellnps #findyourpark #preservation #historicpreservation #savingplaces #architecture #historicarchitecture #lowellarchitecture #greekrevival #secondempire #richardsonianromanesque #historicbuildings #historicdistrict #historicdowntown #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #nps #historiclibrary #nationallibraryweek #throwbackthursday
