The second project I mentioned yesterday - just finished this week - is photos and a website for Stay On Broadway, a beautiful building downtown. Suzie directed the project that took this 1860 livery stable and turned it into three absolutely gorgeous suites. Suzie and Ron live in one, and the other two are vacation rentals. The suites are some of the nicest spaces I've seen here in Madison, with a great mix of preserved historical detail and modern luxury, and they were a pleasure to shoot photos of. The resulting website is as detailed yet clean as the suites themselves. You can check it out here: www.stay-on-broadway.com #freewheelstudios #madisonindiana #historicbuildings #realestatephotography

RPA have had the pleasure in providing QS works, helping to restore and re-build the remaining section of this now private property, providing a 3 storey living/library space. Honouring conservation boundaries while seamlessly connecting this section to the already renovated main house. Working with materials and aesthetics to preserve the beauty of the property and architecture. Sker house is a huge 16th century, Grade l Listed building which Cadw describes as "one of the major Elizabethan houses of South Wales". Sker is one of the last great country houses in Wales, which underwent a significant restoration some years ago. @Peter Bricknell Conservation & Building @Michael Davies Conservation Architects / Historic Building Consultant #quantitysurveyor #quantitysurveying #listedhouses #periodrenovation #historicbuildings #projectmanagement

My previous posts were of several old barns on a historic farmstead. This is the former farmhouse. It has been fully modernised in the 20th century and does not retain any historic features internally. The roof has been replaced, as have the windows. The shell is all that remains. There are two plaques at the top of the front elevation wall. One says 1586, the other 1648. No other history is known about the house, which is Grade II listed. #oldbuildings #farmhouse #farmhouse #historicbuildings #buildings #birds #eggs #wisteria #summer #stone #architecture #architect #history #mason #roof #heritage #house #home #architecturephotography #photo #photography #holidaylet #history #georgian #builder #building #conservation #garden

Fort Laramie National Historic Site stands as a pivotal site in American history, serving as a key trading post and diplomatic center during the 19th century. Originally a fur trading outpost, it became a crucial stop along western migration routes and a center for treaty negotiations between the US government and Native American tribes. Fort Laramie has undergone significant preservation efforts to maintain its historical integrity and ensure its legacy for future generations. In 1938, the site was declared a National Monument by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was designated as a National Historic Site in 1960. The National Park Service has been actively involved in the preservation and interpretation of Fort Laramie, conducting archaeological research, restoring historic structures, and providing educational programs for visitors. Join us every Friday during Historic Preservation Month as we celebrate the historic forts in Wyoming and the efforts to preserve them. . . #preservationmatters #historicbuildings #historicwyoming #historicpreservationmonth #wyoming #thatswy #history #historicpreservation #preservation #historicplaces #Wyoming #HistoricPreservation #fortlaramie #nationalhistoricsite

The beauty of Calderdale 82.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-2) From Allescholes, the packhorse trail down to the Walsden-Littleborough turnpike road; 3-4) Looking towards Warland, a tiny hamlet, very old and charming, bridging the border between the townships of Walsden and Blatchinworth & Calderbrook on the Eastern side of the Walsden valley. The infant Walsden Water, often erroneously called the River Calder, runs through the hamlet and is the borderline between the two old townships. Nowadays, it is the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. Warland Farm, aka Warland House, nestled into the hillside and dated 1655 I F. The house gives its name to the Warland district; 4-6) Air vents for Summit Tunnel, a railway tunnel between Walsden and Littleborough, which was begun in 1837 for the Manchester & Leeds Railway Company. It cost £251,000 to construct. At any one time, between 800 and 1200 men were working on the tunnel. 9 workmen died during the construction. It used 23,000,000 bricks and 8,000 tons of cement. George Stephenson regarded the tunnel as the greatest piece of railway engineering he had achieved. 7-10) Stonehouse Farm, 19th-century, its name probably derived from the fact that many of the other houses in Walsden, when this property was erected, being built of wood. The valley was exceedingly well timbered at a former period. Now, a place seemingly deer obsessed. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #railwayhistory #sculptureart #packhorsetrail #airvent

This year the @brumarchitecture is celebrating its 150th anniversary. To commemorate the milestone the Association has invited local architectural practices to come together and honour the work of earlier members of the BAA by creating 3D models of the City’s historic built environment. Each practice taking part has been allocated a specific building to model. Working from details drawn in 1932, we have recreated an elegant doorway that was once located at 26 Lower Priory. As the streetscape and city has changed over time, the doorway is no longer in existence, aside from its original 2D sketch. Inspired by the Association’s theme of the project, to bridge the past with the present, we chose to produce our model by modern techniques of 3D printing. We’re really excited to see all of the other model contributions from our #architectural community, which are being showcased at the BAA Environment Dinner in June and looking forward to an evening of celebrations. #architecture #3dprinting #birmingham #historic #historicbuildings

The beauty of Calderdale 81.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-2) Views over Walsden and towards Todmorden and rising up Allescholes Lane; Allescholes: An area of Walsden situated on the western hills above the valley, reached by a narrow lane that climbs and twists at alarming gradients and angles until it flattens out on a plateau and follows the line of the valley bottom southwards towards Reddishore Scout. The lane was an original packhorse trail linking Walsden with Calderbrook. It was replaced by the turnpike road that followed the valley bottom. Prior to that, the lane over Allescholes was the only route out of Walsden to Littleborough, Rochdale, and beyond. Allescholes boasts two separate farms, each with its own land and cottages. Both farms are ancient, and records show us they were there by 1475, farmed by a Geoffrey and Bernard Butterworth. In 1605 and onwards in that century, the Crossley name appeared in connection with it, and early in the eighteenth century, it was leased to the Fieldens and was passed to their descendents. A Kershaw family owned the land until after 1790, and each farm was always tenanted. 3-4) Lower Allescholes Farm, a farmhouse dated RH 1715, possibly for Richard Howard; 5) Friezland Farm, c.1850, no longer in agricultural use; 6-10) An 18th-century packhorse trail Milestone: Halifax 10 miles Todmorden 2 miles Burnley 9 miles Rochdale 7 miles #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #farmhouse #milestone #countrysideview #allescholes

On a rainy day exploring Northamptonshire, we stopped by this little English Heritage site on a rural country road. Rushton Triangular Lodge is a Grade I listed folly designed by Sir Thomas Tresham (not an architect) and built in 1593-1597 Sir Thomas is a fascinating historical figure. He was related to Catherine Parr, Henry VIII's last wife, and a correspondent of William Cecil and Christopher Hatton, Elizabeth I's councilors, and the queen knighted him at Kenilworth Castle when she stayed there. (Kenilworth is in my earlier posts.) Sir Thomas was also a Catholic, which made things complicated for him in Elizabethan England. At one point he was imprisoned for 15 years for refusing to convert to Protestantism, and later, he was heavily fined constantly for pushing back against the government. This, combined with his building projects, left him nearly broke. Tresham's son inherited his debt and was involved in the Gunpowder Plot and later executed. The folly was designed by him when he was released from prison as a monument to his faith in defiance. The building is full of symbolism relating to the Holy Trinity, so the number 3 features everywhere. Three walls 33 feet long, each with three triangular windows and surmounted by three gargoyles. One wall is inscribed '15', another '93', and the last 'TT'. The building has three floors, upon a basement, and a triangular chimney with trefoil windows. Three Latin texts, each 33 letters long, run around the building on each facade. In order to disguise its meaning, the building was occupied by the estate's harrier (rabbit hunter).

The beauty of Calderdale 80.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1) The former Cross Keys public house (see The Beauty of Calderdale 77 for earlier cross keys mentions). Originally, a beer house was opened at Nip Square, Walsden about 1830, by Abraham Law, a Walsden clogger. When the new highway (now Rochdale Road) was built by the railroad company, his beerhouse lost the passing trade, so he built another beerhouse with 4 cottages facing the old beerhouse on the new highway. Initially, it was called the Cloggers Arms, but in 1848, it was renamed the Cross Keys. Nearby St Peter's Church was built around the same time (see previous post for details) ; 2) 687 Rochdale Rd. Thomas Jackson 1893-1915 lived here. In World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment and died 18th June 1915 (aged 22). He was buried at the Rue-Du-Bacquerot (13th London) Graveyard, Laventie, France [G 8], and on Todmorden War Memorial; 3) Once the main thoroughfare in Walsden; 4) Holly Bank, a Victorian house, now three homes; 5) Previously, The Primitive Methodist Jubilee Chapel, dated 1860; 6) The Border Rose, originally The Butcher's Arms, 1830, it finally became fully licensed in 1952, and in the 1980s, the name was changed to The Border Rose; 7) A milestone. Somedays, it seems like I'm never halfway to anywhere; 8) The Waggon and Horses, recorded in 1847 and once served as a terminus for the Todmorden & District Carriage Company Ltd; 9) A ghost sign for Parkinsons Pills of Burnley; 10) Finally, rising onto the hills and looking down towards Ramsden Wood Road. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #pubsofinstagram #lostpubs #ghostsignsuk #milestone

The Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl was the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph I. (1830-1916) and Empress Elisabeth (1837-1898), who is better known as "Sissi". The building, originally built 1834 by the notary Josef August Eltz, was 1853 bought by Franz Joseph’s mother Archduchess Sophie as a wedding present for her son and her daughter-in-law. In the following years the villa was rebuilt and  enlarged in the classicistic style. The villa is surrounded by a large park, in which was also build a refuge for the empress, the Marmorschlössl“ (finished 1860). The emperor spent every year from the begin of July until the end of August his summer hoildays in Bad Ischl, only accompanied by a small entourage. On 28 July 1914 he signed here the declaration of war against Serbia, after his heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Duchess Sophie of Hohenberg had been assassinated in Sarajewo on 28 June 1914 and the Austrian ultimatum against Serbia had expired. It was the beginning of the First World War. The Kaiservilla is until today in possession of the House Habsburg-Lothringen. #castle #chateau #villa #castillo #castello #kastely #zamek #hrad #kasteel #lukko #ischl #habsburg #alpes #austria #sissi #geschichte #history #histoire #architektur #architecture #castelul #schloss #nature #historicbuildings

The beauty of Calderdale 79.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1-10) St Peter's Church: A Million Pound Church designed by Charles Child in Gothic Revival style. It was consecrated on 7th August 1848, the spire was added by Charles Heyworth in 1864, and church was finally completed in 1875. The building was originally roofed with red London tiles. These proved unsuitable for the Walsden climate in keeping the church warm and were replaced with blue slate tiles. The nave and much of the building was destroyed by fire on 28th May 1948. The roof and stained glass windows were lost, but the spire was saved. The church was not insured. It was rebuilt and re-consecrated in 1956. The spire is a listed structure. 5) The grave of Private William Walton, 10027 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, died at Dardanelles, August 10th 1915, aged 19; and 6-9) The grave of Reuben and Susannah Haigh, and their son John William Haigh, born in Walsden 1850, and died in Ruabon, Wales 1901. He was the owner of the Ruabon Brick and Terracotta Works. The inscription reads: In Memory of JOHN WILLIAM HAIGH of Pen-y-Gardden, Ruabon, N. Wales and Pastureside, Walsden Born September 17th 1850 died July 9th 1901. On the scroll: "From the employees of the Ruabon and Terra Cotta Co. CENTRO CULTURAL BANCO DO BRASIL, São Paulo. The beauty of Calderdale 78.... Walsden: The name is first mentioned in 1235. The name uses the element Welsh and means the valley of the Welsh or valley of the strangers. 1) The former Birks Mill: There is evidence that a mill existed here in 1799, and the close proximity to a source of water for powering the mill from the numerous hillside cloughs made it an ideal location for a mill to be built. There was a datestone over the mill door. In 1917, it was on the ground in the yard waiting to be restored. The stone is engraved 1800 JSC (John & Sarah Crossley of Scaitcliffe Hall, the owners of the land on which it stands). It has been used for wool, worsted, and cotton spinning, manufacture, and weaving. It closed its doors in 1979 when the mill was mainly producing acrilic curtain materials, bedspreads, denims, and tickings. By 2008, plans had been made to convert it to apartments, but, to date, it remains unchanged and in a derelict state; 2) Walsden Parsonage, formerly the Vicarage for the nearby church. The foundation stone was laid in August 1857. It is now a private residence; 3-7) Cropley House, once Saint Peter's National School aka Walsden Parochial School. The building stands next to St Peter's Church. This school was established on 29th May 1847, St Michael's Day. It was completed on Whit Tuesday, 13th June 1848. It was later closed due to structural difficulties, but the building is now restored and converted for residential use. Note the cross keys (5), (The Beauty of Calderdale 80 will have a further cross keys connection); and 8-10) The lych gate to Saint Peter's Church, and fascinating patination on the rear of gravestones. #calderdale #visitcalderdale #caldervalley #boulderclough #ryburnvalley #westyorkshire #visitwestyorkshire #wandering #wanderings #historicbuilding #historicbuildings #historicengland #listedbuilding #listedbuildings #englishheritage #englishhistory #historyofengland #localhistory #history #historylovers #historyphotography #colourphotography #photography #photographyeveryday #photographersofinstagram #photography📷 #derelict #repurposed #lychgate #gravestones

The sinker (initial pattern) was good, but I completely stuffed up sinking it into the blocks. Probably in a rush and didn't get to metal hot enough. They went so far out of square it looked like I would be starting the tool making process all over again.
