Artist talk with Maria Rubinke Maria Rubinke presents her current solo exhibition ’Walking Shadow’ at Martin Asbæk Gallery, the artist’s largest and most ambitious show to date. The exhibition, which has been two years in the making, revolves, much like the artist’s previous work, around existentialism and an on-going exploration of darkness. However, a glimmer of hope is present in Rubinke’s recent work. The talk will take place in Danish. Deconstructed dream images, rooms, and memories merge in the work of Astrid Kruse Jensen. The relationship between photography and remembrance is an important drive for the artist, who has worked with memory as a form of shifted reality in her entire oeuvre. This is expressed through an exploration of the basics of photography. Using double exposure, backlight, chemical traces and the use of long shutter speed, Kruse Jensen generates, with strokes of light, traces of what has already passed, while simultaneously encapsulating traces of resonance. The title of the exhibition refers to the echo of reminiscences in the world: to sense the resonance of the past in the present. _ Astrid Kruse Jensen Weightless Dreams, 2022 Archival fiber print Various sizes For enquiries, dm or contact [email protected] #martinasbaekgallery #contemporaryart @astridkrusejensen #astridkrusejensen

The Finnish team at @brooklynmuseum 😊 Posted @withregram • @brooklynmuseum What’s the opposite of “mansplaining”? The lens-based artworks featured as part of #InTheNowBkM challenge traditional ideas of gender, nationhood, as well as photography itself, from artists including: 1️⃣ Elina Brotherus (@elinabrotherus), who engages with the notion of the artist’s body and actions created as spectacles in her re-creation of Bruce Nauman’s 1966-67 photograph, “Self Portrait as a Fountain.” 2️⃣ Milja Laurila (@milja_laurila), who draws attention to the lack of dignity and individuality of the medical (and often male) gaze in a series of medical photographs transferred onto transparent acrylics. 3️⃣ Ulla Jokisalo (@ulla.jokisalo), whose surreal, hand-crafted work is created through a combination of found photographs, popular magazines, vintage family photos, and more. Marble has been favored by artists throughout history due to its ability to absorb light, resulting in its soft appearance, and Maria Rubinke is keenly aware of the legacy of her artistic medium. Her oeuvre, which once revolved around pure white porcelain, now primarily consists of pieces cast in bronze or carved in marble. Both costly and weighty materials, which, as they also represent most surviving ancient art works and therefore much of our cultural legacy in the West, require an artistic pledge as they’ll remain long after we are gone. _ Maria Rubinke As you were mine, I was yours, 2022 Carrara marble 29 x 50 x 38 cm Edition of 3 + 2 AP 📷 Anders Sune Berg For inquiries contact [email protected] #martinasbaekgallery #contemporaryart @mariarubinke #mariarubinke

Jane Jin Kaisen’s solo exhibition ‘Burial of This Order’ opened yesterday at Gallery TPW in Toronto. Burial of This Order operates at the intersections of funerary ritual, political protest, and carnivalesque performance. This exhibition centres on Kaisen’s titular video installation, through which the audience is invited to follow a procession of social actors who have gathered to ceremoniously bury a world order built upon hierarchy and division. The video builds towards a moment of revolutionary fervour when the procession—moving through an abandoned resort on the South Korean island of Jeju—refuses to complete the burial and instead overthrows and dismantles the scaffolding of the prevailing order so that other narratives and realities can be imagined into being. Peter Bonde’s experiments with painting, during the past three decades, covers everything from the use of perishable materials, assemblage, collage, painting on canvases with pre-printed photographs, to the installation of video screens on the canvas. His new works are merely oil paintings, but the experiment and the expansion of painting is still very central, as Bonde has replaced the traditional canvas with a special, ultra-reflecting mirror foil. Bonde’s colorful strokes, and spontaneous style of painting is now suddenly in constant interchange with the ultra-reflective foil, which incorporates both space and viewer inside the painting. The foil – simultaneously with mirroring the room – seems to dematerialize itself, and the painted motif is thus the only thing remaining, floating weightless in the space as quivering, luminous strokes. _ Peter Bonde Untitled, 2020 Acrylic on mirror foil 160 x 140 cm Unique For inquiries contact [email protected] #martinasbaekgallery #contemporaryart @peter_bonde #peterbonde

A round park bench takes center stage in what seems like an abandoned park. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the frail bench is held together by the serpentine roots of the tree that it once enclosed, but which has been cut down to a stump, suggesting life underneath the surface as well as hope for the future. Like the bench, all elements of a park seem present in Maria Rubinke’s current solo show, yet with a surrealist or even fairytale-like twist. PORTRAIT SERIES is an homage to John Baldessari who wrote about his work in 1974: “I have always avoided doing portraits as something per se. A face is so powerful and dominates all else. In this series I have hidden the face in a variety of manners, trying to allow other information to surface and define the person (...) If art is a mystery, then the face is a betrayer and should be hidden.” When Baldessari was asked what he thinks he will be most remembered for, he said “the guy that put dots on people’s faces”. As a clin d’œil to John, I do the same, but I do my dots in situ with colored berets. Adam Jeppesen’s series of portraits are so-called anthotypes: images created using light-sensitive material from plants. Jeppesen has collected plants to dye the paper, which has then been dried and placed in the sun with a photo negative on top. The color from the organic material remains in the most shaded areas, while the areas most exposed to the sun turn pale. The project therefore involves a high degree of chance as the result is not only dependent on the time of year that the plant-material is harvested, but also the weather during the development. _ Adam Jeppesen Lindwood W, 2022 Anthotype on 300 gr. 81,5 x 63,2 cm Unique For inquiries contact [email protected] @adamjeppesen___ #adamjeppesen #contemporaryart #martinasbaekgallery #martinasbækgallery

Birds in One Place. An on going project about my childhood area, Høje Gladsaxe. A huge part of my childhood was moving freely between the different colourful playgrounds of the tall concrete buildings. Always a negotiation with friends of which playground we should play at. As a teenager hanging around the swings in the dark and as an adult walking past these playgrounds (that now seems to have magically shrunk) thinking about the contrasts and the similarities between the playful towers and the high-rise buildings. By destroying what is pure photography, I can somehow destroy what is often thought as to be “the truth”. This project is not documenting the truth but reflecting upon itself. A look into a world that once were my world but now is something completely different in and of itself. A home to around 4000 people, and a place of thousands of little interactions happening everyday. The project started in 2020. All of the pictures are on film and many of the pictures is developed and processed by hand. #birdsinoneplace #agnesopencall @galleriet_agnes . . #dazedandexposed #copenhagenphotofestival #format #diskobaybooks #martinasbaekgallery #højegladsaxe #kodakportra400 #mamiya645 #bwfilmphotography #futureclub #experimentalphotofestival

Final chance to visit Helen Sear’s ‘Natural Fantastic’, final day is Saturday, April 6. Helen Sear borrows the title from French surrealist Roger Caillois. Martin Asbæk Gallery is proud to present “Walking Shadow” by Maria Rubinke, opening on April 19, the artist’s largest and most ambitious show to date. The exhibition, which has been two years in the making, revolves, much like the artist’s previous work, around existentialism and an on-going exploration of darkness. However, a glimmer of hope is present in Maria Rubinke’s recent work. _ Opening: Maria Rubinke - Walking Shadow 📆 April 19 at 4-7PM 📍 Martin Asbæk Gallery For inquiries contact [email protected] #martinasbaekgallery #contemporaryart @mariarubinke #mariarubinke
