Just found out about the passing of Dallas Penn..may he rest in peace. I’m grateful that I was able to meet him last year at @brooklynmuseum while vending st First Saturdays. I flagged him down and thanked him for his contributions on the legendary Combat Jack Show podcast. He was gracious to stop and have a quick convo and then copped a pair of socks. What a unique individual this man was. Levy, 67.181 Hunched, faceless figures trudge through a dreary industrial landscape past Larkin’s Coal Company in the artist’s Williamsburg, Brooklyn, neighborhood. A labor activist, Maurice Kish captured the Depression-era experience of men searching for work along the East River’s industrial waterfront. The cropped foreground orients viewers to the plight of the job seekers, while in the background industrial pollution is represented through sooty smoke clouds across the river on the Lower East Side and through roughly applied paint in somber tones. In addition to labor exploitation, which Kish sought to expose in many of his canvases, the working classes were often those most negatively impacted by environmental contaminants. This weekend the legend himself, Director Charlie Ahearn stopped by our vendor booth @brooklynmuseum and copped our spring jacket “The Tiger of Ryokoku”. Ahearn directed the classic film “Wild Style”, the quintessential film that documented all the elements of Hip-Hop featuring all the major players in the culture in NYC in 1983. Third slide is a clip from the film featuring graffiti writer/artist Lee Quinones. This exact clip was used as the intro to Nas’ debut album Illmatic. The music in this scene is “Subway Theme” by Grand Wizzard Theodore, the DJ who invented the scratch. Just to give you context to the important and influence of this film. Ahearn also directed a documentary on the amazing photography @jamelshabazz. I went to Brooklyn Museum for “Brooklyn Talks: Takashi Murakami” There was a talk on Murakami’s new series of paintings that respond to Utagawa Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo, a Brooklyn Museum treasure that is on view for the first time in 24 years. It was an interesting discussion about how Utahawa Hiroshige inspired Van Gogh and Takashi Murakami copied Van Gogh’s Utagawa copy. We enjoyed that comparison of the original Utagawa Hiroshige’s picture and Takashi Murakami’s picture. Both were amazing. Can you see what the difference is? I wear my granma’s kimono today which is not as old as the Edo period but pretty old and I love it.
