Blackbirded - My final composition project explores the theme of the history of Blackbirding. This history is tied to my identity because some of my ancestors were Blackbirded from the Island my mother is from - New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. It is very important to me that this history is taught in schools, universities and is made available and easily accessible to the public. I started researching Blackbirding when I was in year nine and after discovering that the history of Blackbirding in Australia is only taught in schools in Queensland and some parts of New South Wales I made a vow to myself to include Blackbirding in whichever assignments or art projects I can. On the first panel is the depiction of a ship floating in the ocean. Australian South Sea Islanders choose Blue and Green as their flag colors because their ancestors had their distinct cultural identities stripped from them but they are still connected by the ocean. I used loose unidentifiable figures for the second and third panels and complete silhouettes for the first panel. By using silhouettes, these figures don’t have to represent just one individual; they can signify people as a whole. On the second panel are the loose representations of figures on a ship. This ship is one of the ships which brought kidnapped and coerced Pacific Islanders (particularly Melanesians) across the ocean to work on the sugarcane plantations in Queensland. I chose to paint the figures using an “inverted” colour scheme to provoke an eerie and unsettling feeling in the viewer, also following the blue tonal range. The third panel depicts figures in the sugarcane field of blue. They were painted to be transparent and ghostly with a wash of the blue glitter over them. When Pacific Islanders passed away while working in the fields, they were buried in shallow unmarked graves. There are remains still being discovered today. The sugar cane almost enveloping the figures is symbolic of how the Australia sugar industry (which is now the second largest exporter of raw sugar in the world) was built on the back of South Sea Islander’s ancestors. #blackbirding #blackbirded #pasifika #melanesia #southseaislander
