Hey, Family: It's time for the last installment in my Tribal Profiles series from Papua New Guinea. Today we shall learn a bit about the Tambul tribe. I used the term "bit" as that was all I was able to glean was a bit of information about them during my trip in August. Hopefully, I will be able to revisit next year and learn more about this amazing country and its people. The first thing you notice about the Tambul are their amazing traditional bilas. “Bilas”, or body ornamentation, includes elaborate and impressive headdresses made of bright colors and bird feathers. The faces of the men are painted with eye-catching red and yellow stripes, giving them a fearful and warlike expression. Meanwhile, their songs and dances fight their attire and resemble war cries. Staff Stories Sunday: Meet Ashley! Ashley is a 20-year-old university student from Canada, who has taken time out from university to work with MAF in Papua New Guinea in a short-term volunteer role. Ashley studies business and marketing, and has joined MAF's communications team for placement over six months. This was a huge step for Ashley, moving across the world. She has been able to acquire new skills and put existing skills into practice. “I have been able to learn a lot of different skills while being here,” says Ashley. “Some of the skills I knew back home were able to apply. But there’s been a lot of things that have been pushing me out of my comfort zone in the best way. I was able to learn a lot in regards to communicating and interviewing people." Ashley has been capturing stories, joining flights to report on MAF's impact, managing social media posts for MAF Papua New Guinea, crafting engaging content and learning the local language, Tok Pisin. Her advice for young adults is to consider whether a placement could be the right next step for you. If you're interested in volunteering with MAF in any capacity, please reach out. Future Sound of London - Environment 7.003 After recording a series of groundbreaking and seminal albums in the 90s, each of which moved progressively further away from the wide-eyed euphoria of their earliest singles, the duo of Dougans and Cobain put out a double album of seemingly unironic 70s-style prog rock under their Amorphous Androgynous alias. That album was greeted with confusion by fans and critics alike and the duo seemingly disappeared. In the two decades since then they've operated, if not completely under the radar, then on a parallel plane. Huge troves of ‘archive’ material have been released through their own label and more recently we’ve had brand new music, in the form of the Environments Series. Keeping up with all this would be a full time job and I've only scratched the surface, but happy to say despite their prolificness, quality control has not suffered a jot. Which brings us to Environment 7.003, the third instalment in the series, which on its appearance caused much excitement in a certain pocket of the internet. This was due to the cover art very closely resembling FSOL's classic 1995 album ISDN, which was recorded live and transmitted via ISDN cable. They've been inhabiting this plane for so long it feels like their music exists outside of any context and as such, is hard to define. All manner of bleeps, bloops and what sound like rainforest field-recordings situate Environments very firmly in FSOL’s post-apocalyptic ambient terrain, and there’s a distinct 90s-ness in the ‘worldliness’ of the beats. But trying to pin any sort of genre on this is a fool’s errand. Anyone familiar with FSOL will know the vibe they usually lay down - haunting, trippy, lush, futuristic, urban, cosmic - I could go on and it’s all here in absolute spadefuls. #PNGNews Court battles hindering progress in Madang Governor for Madang Province Ramsey Pariwa says the development of Madang has been significantly delayed due to many court cases filed by different parties at both the provincial and district levels. Mr. Pariwa said over the past 15 years, both the Madang District and the Madang Province have been held back by these ongoing court battles. Pariwa is concerned that instead of collectively working together, the parties involved have chosen to repeatedly challenge each other through the courts. He is calling on the these parties to accept defeat, rather than continuously running to the courts. “These constant litigations have had a significant negative impact, both politically and administratively, on the development and advancement of Madang Province,” Mr. Pariwa said. Another amazing trip over the Owen Stanley's. Shout out to this group of champions, after a major setback in the beginning the group banded together and finished strong. The teamwork/resilience amongst the trekking group and the handwork/dedication from the PNG lads made this trip one to remember! A special time along the trail following in the footsteps of the ANZACS which was finished off with a moving dawn service at Bomana war cemetery.
