Waiting Willow (a tribute poem) Waiting Willow Weird weather making me moody. Waiting willow guides my gait. Bark like a balm, I touch my teacher. Grief to gratitude relation renewed. Here’s my tribute poem to a special willow tree relative written for this National Poetry Month and Earth Month. The first two lines started as a one line contribution to the Scarborough Poetry Club’s new collective poem called “Weather Watching” which I’ll share in a future blog post. Lines 3-7 were written during a poetry workshop for the @climatepsychologyalliancena Expressive Arts committee and other members. The last line was added during editing. I read “Waiting Willow” during the Scarborough Poetry Club’s Voices in Verse VI: Celebrating National Poetry Month 2024 with the theme WEATHER at Agincourt Library on Saturday April 20. I also facilitated this event featuring readings by Jeevan Bhagwat and members of the Club. Okay, I realize we’re more than halfway through April already, but… happy National Poetry Month! Since last year, I’ve had the honour of serving as Membership Committee Chair on the board of the League of Canadian Poets. If you’re a poet, I hope you’ll consider joining – not only is it a LEAGUE, which is just so freaking cool, but it’s also Canada’s only national organization for poets and poetry. Meet another speaker at Queer(ing) Italian-Canadian Poetry event on Friday and contributor to Here & Now Volume 2: Christopher Sisca. Christopher Sisca is an Italian-Canadian visual artist, writer, and anthropologist. He is studying Anthropology, DPhil (PhD), at the University of Oxford and working on Calabrian gastro-tourism development. He holds an MSc in Social Anthropology (University of Oxford), and an Honours BFA in Visual Arts (York University). His creative practices intersect his Calabrian culture and queerness. When asked what being queer and Italian Canadian and/or the Here & Now project means to him, he said, “being queer and Italian-Canadian (having both my parents from Calabria) represents for me today the beautiful intersection of two coexisting identities, but this was not always the case. In the past growing up in a diasporic culture, I understood these identities as being binary opposites and in constant conflict. That one canceled out the other and vice versa. It was only through my art and creative writing practices along with encountering Licia Canton’s seminal first volume of Here & Now that I began to actively reconcile this and discover that one could create the place and the space for queerness and Calabrian culture to coexist and thrive in.
