"At a very young age, I have always wanted to be a part of the medical profession and take care of people in some way. I feel a great sense of satisfaction in making others feel better about their overall health. My advice for someone aspiring to become a Physician Assistant would be to work extremely hard in your studies, as it will be very worth it in the end. You will then gain the necessary knowledge required to care for your patients and make a difference. One of my most memorable experiences as a Physician Assistant, as of late, was one that I will always cherish. I had a young patient complaining of severe low back and neck pain, which were significantly impacting her activities of daily living. They had seen multiple providers in the past with not much improvement. During our initial visit, I took a little over than half-hour answering her questions, addressing her concerns, explaining her diagnoses, and discussing treatment options. She was tearful and extremely thankful that I spent the time thoroughly explaining everything to her in simple terms. Nevertheless, shortly thereafter she started to feel much better after completing physical therapy. This experience taught me an important lesson. MESSAGE FROM THE VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION October 12, 2023 Honor the Physician Assistant Profession As we observe #NationalPhysicianAssistantWeek from October 6-12, it is our privilege to acknowledge and celebrate the invaluable contributions of our physician assistants (PAs) to the #VA health care system. This week, we honor their unwavering commitment to serving #Veterans. The PA profession, born out of necessity in the mid-1960s due to a shortage and uneven geographic distribution of primary care physicians, has a remarkable history. Notably, the first class of physician assistants graduated from Duke University on October 6, 1967. Several of these graduates embarked on careers at the Durham VA. As a matter of pride, we can affirm that VA was the first employer of PAs. To this day, we remain the largest employer of PAs in the country, with 3,000 dedicated professionals serving Veterans—28% of whom are themselves Veterans. Nationally, there are approximately 170,000 PAs. At VA, we hold our PAs in the highest regard and take immense pride in their daily work. During PA Week, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and recognition to our PAs for their tireless dedication to our nation's Veterans. We are so excited to take a moment to show our appreciation for our Medical Director, Jaime Lopez, PA-C, and to give you a little background on his "why" for choosing this career, in Winters. This was Jaime's response- "My passions for this profession evolved over the years (1998-or so 😩) while I worked as an MA alongside MDs/DOs/ NPs and PAs. I was certainly intrigued by the science behind medicine and was inspired by those clinicians who I worked with as an MA, seeing how they used their knowledge/skills to treat patients, and seeing how patients, in turn, expressed gratitude for that help/support, further fueled my desire to go back to school-always motivated by those who originally inspired me-including my brother, who is also a physician. Erica works in Primary Care at the BWH Phyllis Jen Center where she is a Lead PA, and is a Senior PA in the Primary Care department. She was additionally appointed Interim Assistant Medical Director at the Phyllis Jen Center, becoming the first PA to hold a similar role at BWH. Her colleague Teresa Zhang, PA-C, says of Erica, “Initially the first PA to be hired at the Jen Center, it is no surprise that Erica’s work ethic, commitment to patient care, and ability to foster an environment that allows her colleagues to feel safe, heard, and validated have paved the way for six other PAs to be hired after her.”

In celebration of #NationalPhysicianAssistantWeek, we’re highlight two outstanding PAs at @bridgewaterpediatrics: Nouha Georges and Kimberly Barrett! Here’s what they had to say about why they became PAs and their favorite parts of their jobs. “Growing up with limited access to healthcare, I always wanted to contribute to providing quality care for everyone,” says Nouha. “I love working with kids, who are funny, happy, and entertaining. I also love my colleagues and the fun and welcoming environment we have. Everyone deserves to be heard and taken care of, no matter the age or reason!” “I always loved science and was drawn to medicine from a young age. I learned about the PA profession in college and was really drawn to the idea of being trained in general medicine, yet having the flexibility of working in other specialties,” says Kimberly. “The best thing about my job is the relationships I build with my patients and their families,” she adds. “It is truly an awesome experience to be a part of their lives in this special way. Nirupa has been a Physician Assistant since 2004 and is certified by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She has a BA in Biology from Hofstra University and a BS and Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from Touro College. Nirupa is a graduate of the Ultrasounds Diagnostic School and is certified as a sonographer. Nirupa’s experience encompasses primary care, emergency/urgent care and internal medicine. Nirupa’s areas of interest include preventive cardiology and cardiac wellness.

Tandy, one of our dedicated Physician Assistants, is at the heart of our healthcare team. As we honor #NationalPhysicianAssistantsWeek, let’s dive into the incredible role PAs like Tandy play in patient care. Tandy, who works in the Pediatric Heart Institute, brings her expertise to inpatient general cardiology consults throughout Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and interventional cardiology care for children with congenital heart defects. Her compassionate care spans from premature babies to teenagers, making a profound impact in their lives. After years of rigorous training in becoming a PA, Tandy can diagnose illnesses, prescribe medications, and perform various medical tasks under the guidance of a physician. She tells us that one of the many challenges she faces as a PA is, “Explaining what our position actually is.” Some used to wonder if PAs were on a path to become doctors. However, Tandy explains that PAs have the autonomy to evaluate patients, order tests, and administer treatments independently. They are essential in providing high-quality medical care and facilitating collaboration between specialists. “People often see us as physician extensions,” says Tandy, “but they may not realize that we make medical decisions independently as well.” Tandy also shares invaluable advice for families supporting loved ones through illness or hospitalization: “Remember, mental health matters.
