@steigerrebekka Rebekka Steiger ‘to where grey waters flow’ (2021) Ink on canvas 240 x 200 cm ‘to where grey waters flow’ depicts a solitary and heroic knight tall on horseback. Their face is shrouded behind a mask, and their eyes reveal deep determination and distant expectations. The dark outlines of the knight portray their resolute and courageous character, while the faint yellow color of the background penetrates the negative space in the gaps between the lines, as if it illuminates a glimmer of hope in the darkness. Even though it’s difficult to tell the knight‘s facial expression or their gender, one can still sense the spirit of fearlessness and determination to gallop forward that the knight exudes. This work not only demonstrates Rebekka’s reinterpretation of the image of the knight, but also a praise of spiritual power. Horse riders are a theme that @steigerrebekka Rebekka Steiger depicts for as long as she has painted. Before her first painting of a horse rider, she had a picture of a Mongolian horseman. Rather than the conventional symbolism of horse and horse rider as a symbol of power, Rebekka is most attracted to the symbiosis between horse and man, as well as the dynamic between them. Horse riders in Rebekka‘s works can be solitary or group riders. They are both found in stark, pastoral landscapes as much as they are in intense, abstract scenes.
