A day trip to Hamilton Pool Preserve. There was just a trickle of water flowing over the waterfall, but the pool was cool, clear and swimmable. The local catfish were friendly. The crew rockin’ it like rockstars. We had a fairly large group of 14 people in total. After some time at the water hole we hiked to the Pedernales River. There was an abundance of flowers in bloom. After spending a few hours at the preserve, we decided to refuel at Jester King Brewery. The local goats were friendly. Waterhole Activity. A family band of Sable Island horses – stallion, two mares (one with a foal), and a young chestnut male – in a valley between the dunes. The sand in the floor of the valley is darker because it is moist. And it is moist because it’s very close to the surface of the fresh water table. There are many similar areas throughout the island, and these are places where horses can easily dig for water. It is World Hyena Day! The #hyena is the second largest #predator on land in Africa and one of my favourite animals. Very misunderstood and maligned, but, in fact, critical to the ecosystem. Hyenas are incredible “cleaners” digesting every single part of their prey, from the fur through to the bones. Nothing is left. While they are known as scavengers, they are, in fact, very effective, albeit violent #hunters. I have photographed the spotted hyena countless times, but I have only ever seen the shyer, smaller, #stripedhyena on one brief occasion @lentorrelodge. Thankfully, I was able to calm my giddiness long enough to capture a few images. What an absolutely spectacular looking #animal! Day THREE…This spectacular Thailand water hole was showcased by a travel blogger on their YouTube. They didn’t disclose the location as it was more of a ‘locals only spot’ they said. Armed with the knowledge that it was in the province of Krabi, I got investigating and with the help of Google Maps I tracked it down! It was well off the beaten track, with some serious navigation skills needed to reach it 😆. 📍Etosha National Park, Namibia. Watching these incredible animals in the wild was absolutely amazing — like seeing the picture books from my childhood come to life. However, like so many places I visited in southern Africa, the infrastructure for tourists is built right up in the animals’ natural habitat. Here the seating area (not in the photos of course) is practically on top of the waterhole. If the animals want to drink they have to get much closer than they’d like to humans — lots of noisy, smelly, camera-pointing humans, myself included — or they’ll go thirsty. I watched one giraffe hesitate for nearly an hour, coming closer then skittering away, before finally venturing to the water’s edge. When she eventually put her head down to drink, legs splayed to reach the water, she’d only get time for a sip before a shout or movement from the people watching would startle her back up again. Yes, the money from tourists helps with conservation and protection efforts. Yes, the animals are still affected. Fair trade?
