Or just a horse, just a rabbit, just a snake, just anyone… This is my cat Hooper, who passed on October 15, 2008. Yes—I remember the exact date, even though I’ve never written it down anywhere. Hooper was and is a beautiful soul. So sunny, friendly (even with strangers), bubbly, and silly. Such a good friend to me and my other cat—Hooper’s best friend, Bandit. I never experienced grief to the level I felt over losing him; and I had had relatives, including a couple of close grandparents, die before him. I let all the grief through—for the first time ever. All this grief over this little cat. I cried in front of co-workers and friends—I couldn’t help it. I didn’t care what they thought (unusual for me). I took time off from work (it wasn’t enough). Hooper was family. Hooper was a best friend. He wasn’t “just” anything. I didn’t care if others judged me or thought differently of how a cat “ranks” in the order of important things. I do not put much stock or trust in anyone who doesn’t have the capacity to have compassion for animals. My spilling of tears and raw expression of vulnerability and pain honored who he is and what he had meant to me. If it made others uncomfortable, that was their problem. Do not let anyone else judge you for your grief for your companion animal. The ones who get it will hold space for you, the ones who don’t you can take a second look at if you even want them around—later. In the meantime, it’s a hard road to walk down. And you are allowed to walk it any way you want. My cat Bandit understood what I was going through. Because it hit him hard, too. We grieved Hooper together. It was one of the most transforming experiences of my life, grieving this little white and brown cat. It made me a better, even more compassionate person. I love this photo of my first cat, a black cat named Bandit, because he looks like a giant compared to Butch, in the background. (Butch was a little kitten when he knew Bandit.) Bandit was and is a giant. I was a mess in my twenties—addicted to drugs and alcohol, stumbling my way through life—and Bandit is the one who kept me sane and occasionally grounded. He taught me that animals can be way more evolved, that they can be your best friends, that they can show you all manner of things including the most important thing—how to love another, with no strings attached. I survived emotionally and spiritually because of him. Yes—because of that little, but giant cat. But he also saved my life in a physical sense, as one drunken night—one of many—I passed out while I had been boiling an egg on the stove. I slept through the fire alarm blaring. I woke up only because Bandit was mewling in my ear. I remember it clearly—he wasn’t shrieking, just gently mewling. Like he knew that the loud sounds were not going to penetrate my alcohol-fueled stupor. The blaring fire alarm hadn’t worked. It was the gentle voice of my beloved cat that got me up. When I scurried into the kitchen, stinking of burnt egg, the pot had burned so hot that it had cracked, and the whole wall behind the stove was scorched black. Bandit passed in 2011. I miss his physical presence so much. But thankfully I can still communicate with him. SOME CATIO DEVELOPMENTS! With the weather finally getting warm and Spring settling in, we’re getting more action in our catio. We’ve now had 5 out of 6 cats hanging out at the same time in there. We’ve also had Picasso (brown tabby) have his first full visit of the entire catio a few days ago. He went 4 months without setting a paw in it; he only peered out into the tunnel once or twice in that time. Now he’s usually first in line to make the first morning visit out there. About a week before that, Lyle (our orange tabby) had his first full visit, and is now a regular. Butch (black and white cat) is still the only cat who usually ventures upward, into the higher catwalks. There is a photo of him on one of the upper tiers. The first photo is Yoda (fluffy young male cat) impatiently nudging Lyle forward on the walkway out to the catio. Luna, our female Tortie cat, is now lounging out there for hours at a time, though we don’t have great photos of her out there yet. Photos have been a little hard to get because they were not used to us coming outside while they were in there; there were spooked by the disturbance. But they are getting used to that. The catio is positioned near feeders that make it Bird Central, so there is a lot of action for them out there. Pretty soon we are going to put some furniture in there for them to lounge on. I love veterinarians, and we as animal caretakers need them. They are absolutely necessary for treating physical problems with our animals. (Not so much behavioral ones.) My newsletter will go into much more depth than I go to here, but here are some key points: - YOU are responsible for your animal’s care, not your vet. (Ergo, you should have one you trust, and you should feel like you are involved in every step of your animal’s care.) - Do not just turn your brain off because your vet is the “expert.” It’s your job, for the sake of your animal, to pay attention and clearly understand what your vet is telling you. - Does your vet listen to you? Yes—the vet has the years of medical school—but YOU have the years of knowing your animal inside and out. If they are not taking your knowledge and understanding of your own animal into account, you probably want to look elsewhere. - Research any drugs your vet recommends. Know the side effects—for pharmaceuticals, there almost always are. It may be possible to explore natural alternatives, like homeopathics. - TRUST your intuition. It’s a powerful tool, and if you pay attention to it on a regular basis, it will never lead you astray! - The right vet for you and your animal is out there. You should NEVER settle. I have a lot of experience with this, and six mostly-old cats who are generally in good health, and not on ANY medications. Here’s something people often don’t want to hear (sorry): To help your animal, YOU almost always have to do some work yourself. “Can’t you just tell him what to do?” It doesn’t work that way. No animal communicator worth their salt tries to coerce an animal into doing anything. This is common sense. I am a complete stranger to the animal I am talking to. I am not their person. Change will have to be spurred on from YOU, since you are the emotional leader in the house. And often the change is yours to make. For example, often people come to me with animals with “sudden” behavior problems. And then I find out that the human has a new job, a new baby in the house, has been away a lot, or otherwise has something NEW taking up a lot of their attention. When I talk to the animal, they tell me—and I FEEL from them—that they feel left out; That they are not getting enough attention. Once we know how the animal feels, then I can suggest some things to make the animal feel better again—but these are practical, tangible changes that the HUMAN must make. Sometimes I lose people in that process. They thought a “one and done” session would fix everything. Like I would just tell the animal what’s what. A session WILL help, just because the animal gets to express how they feel. But real healing takes time, takes work, and takes commitment from YOU. And change is not going to happen if there is actually NO problem with the animal. Sorry, my human friends—but a significant percentage of animal issues arise because they are reacting to something YOU are doing. You know the phrase, “It takes two to tango?” We all have a part to play when our animal is having trouble. But this is a good thing. Healing is something we do together, WITH our animal. As with everything else, you’re in it together with them. An animal communicator’s #1 job is to be able to communicate with an animal in THEIR language—telepathy. And to be able to understand them and effectively translate their messages back into human language—since a lot of their communication is through pictures and feelings. But that’s just part of it. If you don’t have complete empathy with other people and understand how to communicate in a way that they can hear what their animals are trying to tell them, and what to do about it, then you’re not going to get very far in helping animals OR their people. EVERY problem with an animal involves their human caretaker. Reeling off the animal’s inner thoughts and feelings is nice, and can impress people, but a good animal communicator has to know what to DO with that information. And how to help the human clients figure out practical ways to help their animals and their households. That is always my focus as an animal communicator. Whether it’s communication to help with your animal’s behavioral problems; physical problems; being a bridge between you and your animal who has crossed over; helping with the end of life transition of your animal; finding a lost animal; or even teaching you how to talk to animals in one of my animal communication classes—I have to understand YOU, the human, and be there for you. This is not something that they teach you in animal communication school. This takes a lot of experience, empathy, and the ability to be open—to be able to hold space and just LISTEN. I feel thrilled and honored when I see a spider scuttling around somewhere in my house. I feel like they are blessings, that our family is more protected by them. That our house is safer. Is that crazy? Or is it crazy to squash them because they look “foreign,” or “different,” or “gross,” or whatever? I let go of my unwarranted, unfounded societal brainwashing about insects long ago. If the spiders in my house are threatened by the cats, I rush in to save them. (NOT by putting them outside, either. Many spiders won’t make it if you relocate them outside. My friend Bryson came to me one day with a simple request: "Can you take some pictures of me and Ace together? I don't think I'm going to have him much longer." Saying goodbye to our pets is hard. I am Animal Michael Lane. I am an animal communicator. That means I am an expert in communicating with animals—living or passed—telepathically. Telepathic communication is mostly images and feelings, though there are words, too. This is the universal language of ALL animals. The photo is from my trip to Thailand to help rehabilitate abused and exploited Asian elephants. But more deeply, I am helping both the animal and their human caretaker know and understand each other more deeply, and in so doing help BOTH the animal and human heal. This is all practical stuff. This is me hand feeding Picasso. About three years ago, Picasso had most of his teeth extracted. He had to learn how to eat differently. I had to hand feed him every day. Now he eats most—though usually not all—of his food on his own. Having no teeth does make the act of eating “tiring” after a while—this is what he has told me. But he also really LOVES that I hand feed him. Hand feeding your animal is another way to deepen your bond with them. Start doing it when they are healthy, so that they are used it by the time they have some problem or illness where you have to depend on hand feeding to get food in them. If you do happen to be in a situation where you are hand feeding a sick animal, remember—they’re doing the best they can. It can be frustrating and even scary when they won’t eat, even from your hand—but you must exercise restraint and show them nothing but love and compassion. Picasso had days when he just couldn’t, and I gave him pets, kisses, and encouragement anyway. When it comes to food and eating, always be in full-love mode. You don’t ever want them to associate the act of eating with frustration, anger, or any trauma-inducing feeling. (I will cover giving them medicine another time.) Vent your frustrations later, away from their mealtime. (You better believe I did this.) You can overdo the hand feeding. An animal, when healthy, should be eating most of their meals on their own. Picasso will sometimes eat two bites and then look up at me. I tell him he has to eat more before we do the hand feeding, and he does. I love doing it. And he loves it, too. It’s yet another way that we connect intimately. I have communicated with hundreds of animals who have passed, including the one in the photo—Bandit, my first cat. They all say some form of this: “I am still here. Please talk to me.” No exceptions. Exactly NONE have said, “Nah, I’m good.” Whether they are newly transitioned, or whether their bodies have been gone for decades, they are there for you. Here’s how you connect with them, it’s really complicated (NOT!): Be in a quiet place. Close your eyes. Picture them. And start talking. First tell them you WANT them to connect with you. (They want to make sure you’re okay with it.) Then say whatever you want to say. (At first it will probably be one-sided; an outpouring of your feelings.) Don’t overthink it. It’s that easy. Will it feel funny? Maybe. How will you know you’re connecting with them? Well, it might not feel that way at first, but do it enough times and you WILL feel them—their thoughts, their feelings, their presence. Be disciplined—keep reaching out to connect—and I guarantee you, you will get messages back, and you will KNOW it’s them. I talk to Bandit all the time. I can ask him anything, and he answers me. He even helps me with the work I do now. That’s right—many of your passed animals would love to be your GUIDES, if you want them to be. The only thing that can hamper your connection is stuff like guilt, shame, and trauma—and I know—often the passing of our animals IS traumatic. If that’s you, then ask for help. Book a session. I’ll be the go-between, and with your animal’s help, clear away the blocks and help you two keep the eternal connection going. You LOVE each other. You were everything to each other. —When I go into my meditation and connect with an animal telepathically, for the most part I see them just like this photo of Picasso: staring at me straight-on. Why? Because direct, straight-on eye contact, just like in a human conversation, develops the most intimacy and connection. Connecting that way also reinforces that we are EQUALS, instead of this human towering over the animal, which would suggest emotional and energetic dominance. This is why I always ask for photos of your animal with their eyes “looking at or toward the camera.” Connecting in this way builds more trust in me for the animal. Ergo, they’re willing to open up fully to me. I can also “see” the animal from other points of view: I will always look at the body to see how the animal looks—if they look healthy, for example. And I will also see them walking in this telepathic connection, because their walk tells a lot about who they are and how they are feeling.
