Last week, Global Citizen co-hosted a briefing with the Governments of #Barbados and #Switzerland for UN member states at the Palace of Nations in Geneva, highlighting our policy priorities. Stepping into this historic building, originally constructed for the League of Nations, was a humbling experience. Today, it serves as the home of the United Nations in Geneva. The briefing drew a strong turnout, and I’m grateful for the warm introductory remarks from the Ambassadors of Barbados and Switzerland. Reuters spoke with experts and migrants who highlighted China’s inadequate social security system, which the government is patching rather than overhauling as it prioritizes industrial modernization for growth. Meanwhile, the demand for social services is increasing as the population ages. Demographers warn that China’s elderly face grim prospects, with many rural migrants returning to the countryside for low-paid jobs to survive. Reliance on China’s basic rural pension could mean living below the poverty line, prompting many to seek additional income through city jobs or selling crops. China’s workforce is rapidly aging, with around 12.8% over 60 in 2022, a figure expected to rise as 300 million more Chinese reach their 60s in the coming decade.
