What is realtime animation? Realtime animation is the process of utilising a game engine technology with performance capture to puppet and render 3D character in real time. At Fika, we couple realtime animation through performance capture with realtime rendering through Unreal Engine to create a live playback of not only a character, but a full animated sequence with environment, set dressing and props. This previsualisation of the final sequence allows for adjustments to be made to the performance while on the mocap stage, saving time in post production. ESPN teamed up with the NFL, Pixar, and a tech company called Beyond Sports to turn a Falcons vs. Jaguars NFL game into a live cartoon in Andy’s room from Toy Story. This was the first time they pulled off something this cool live, using NFL player stats, Beyond Sports’ fancy limb tracking, and the Unity video game tech. Animating the players with all the action and hidden limbs was super tricky. The AI stepped in to smooth out parts where players got lost in the shuffle, making everything look seamless in real-time. Looking ahead, this tech could change the game by letting viewers dive into the action from any angle, making it feel like you’re right there on the field. Jules has had the fun-filled job of suiting up as a motion-capture performance artist with Fika Entertainment on Mattel’s 'American Girl Designer House' as Mia, and as Po on 'Teletubbies Let’s Go'. After receiving a Diploma of Screen and Media (Acting) at New York Film Academy (Gold Coast) in 2017, she graduated from the University of Canberra/TAFE Queensland in 2021 with a Bachelor of Acting and Performance. Recent credits include mIxED Productions’ 'Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons' and Observatory Theatre’s 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'. Finally completed my Animation Fellowship in @unrealengine with Epic Games. An intensive 3 weeks of frames, curves and additives by top mentors and technical associates. Practical live labs where Unreal problems got Unreal solutions, inspiring guest speakers who gave a run-down of their workflows and amazing industry fellows from across the globe. We had to produce a 10-15 second piece in under 3 weeks as part of an Exquisite Corpse which was a fun team effort. I'll share it soon. Thank you @epicgames for the opportunity. Meet Liam, our awesome Animation Supervisor! After graduating with a Bachelor of Animation with Honours in 2009, Liam has contributed to a plethora of games and children's streamed content both as a freelancer and with studios, as well as teaching animation. His impressive portfolio of experience includes Polly Pocket, Num Noms, Cozy Coupe, Little Baby Bum and Lellobee City Farm. Since joining Fika in early 2022, he has been the Animation Supervisor for the first season of the digital series 'Teletubbies Let's Go!'. He started teaching himself Python scripting about 5 years ago, which he uses to automate repetitive animation tasks and make cool tools! His goal is to ultimately separate the technical from the creative, so animators can purely focus on good, clear performance of characters instead of struggling through technical issues. He finds that the flexibility Fika allows him to switch between animating and Python scripting keeps his mind fresh and focused on the task at hand. Meet Jamie, one of Fika's Developers! Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Jamie’s life has been immersed in the world of TV, film production and technology from a young age. In 2019, Jamie ventured to Australia, where he joined Deakin University's Motion Lab as an intern while completing his Advanced Diploma in Video Game Programming from George Brown College. Following his graduation, he joined Deakin Motion Lab full time, which would go on to become Fika Entertainment. His journey has included a rich background in film post-production and production, where he honed his skills and gained valuable insights into the industry's inner workings. Beyond his tech and film interests, he thrives on snowboarding adventures, music, travel, nature, and a love for animals. Alex (pictured here with his daughters, Lulu and Colette) is a multi-talented artist with a deep passion for enhancing and elevating visual experiences in the world of digital media. With expertise in modeling, lighting, grooms, and Unreal Engine, he has a drive for creating captivating and immersive 3D worlds and Characters here at Fika. Graduating from AIE (Academy of Interactive Entertainment) in 2016 with an Advanced Diploma of Professional Game Development, his educational background provided him with a solid foundation in game development and art.
