together we honor hanami 花見 (“flower viewing”), a tradition that dates back to ancient #japan, centered on admiring the beauty of sakura ( #cherryblossom) season. sakura bloom for a brief period of time and serve as a reminder that life is precious. they begin blooming in Okinawa in January and continue in Japan and other regions in the Northern Hemisphere through mid-May. in 1935, the National Cherry Blossom Festival launched in Washington, D.C. to honor Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki’s gift of more than 3,000 trees to the United States in 1912. hanami is a time for our entire @rowanuniversity community to initiate and nurture new friendships, and foster cultural appreciation and peacebuilding. #dei #rowanproud 🌸🌸🌸 references: *Google Arts and Culture. our “celebrating women/womyn/womxn’s history” 2024 educational series of historical figures continues. as part of this series, we are highlighting @rowanuniversity division of #dei leadership team members who identify as women/womyn/womxn. today we recognize Chiara Latimer, who leads the autism PATH career program and co-directs our division’s center for neurodiversity. in Chiara’s words: “Women’s History Month is a celebration and recognition of the contributions women have made to the world. Personally, it makes me reflect on the wonderful women in my life who are trailblazers in their families, homes, professions, and so many other places within the world. My mother, Yulonda Murray [pictured with Chiara, above], has shown me what it means to have family success and professional success while learning to honor who you are as a person. Most importantly, she has shown me that life is full of opportunities, and there is no need to limit yourself. After retiring as an elementary school principal, she has gone on to continue traveling the world, expanding her business, and publishing her first book—ENDLESS OPPORTUNITIES!” recently, Chiara was recognized as a “2024 Woman to Watch” by South Jersey Biz for her dedication to the neurodivergent student population at Rowan University and promoting #neurodiversityunderstanding. as she shared at the time— “It is imperative to highlight the need for increased awareness related to the experiences of intersectional identities of women. DEI efforts need to promote the celebration of neurodivergent women ... Women hold so many identities, and we need to capture these varied experiences through DEI initiatives.” ✨✨✨ #deiwordsofwisdom #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋

as part of #womenshistorymonth #whm 2024 and year-round, we recognize #audrelorde, who significantly influenced intersectional feminist and LGBTQIA+ movements through her powerful writings. while in high school, she published her first poem in @seventeen; later, her essays, including “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action,” delivered at the Lesbian and Literature Panel of the Modern Language Association December 28, 1977 meeting (excepted below), challenged predominant feminist movements to be inclusive of women of color and those who identified as LGBTQIA+. “We can learn to work and speak when we are afraid in the same way we have learned to work and speak when we are tired. For we have been socialized to respect fear more than our own needs for language and definition, and while we wait in silence for that final luxury of fearlessness, the weight of that silence will choke us. The fact that we are here and that I speak these words is an attempt to break that silence and bridge some of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken.” ⚡️⚡️⚡️ she and fellow writers of color co-founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, dedicated to supporting feminist writers of color with intersecting identities, and promoting designs from Indigenous African, Asian, and Latina/o/x/e cultures. she further founded Sisterhood in Support of Sisters in South Africa, advocating for Black women under apartheid; and co-founded Women’s Coalition of St. Croix, supporting trauma survivors. we owe so much to Lorde and her legacy inspires us this month, year-round, forever. may we strive to understand and uphold her emphasis on recognizing, celebrating, and amplifying—rather than ignoring—differences among women/womyn/womxn with intersecting identities. #dei #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋

as part of #womenshistorymonth #whm 2024 and year-round, we recognize #yurikochiyama, who survived incarceration camps during WWII, during which time the federal government imprisoned Japanese people post-Pearl Harbor. this experience spurred her advocacy for the rights of minoritized and marginalized people, with focus on Black and Asian communities, and people experiencing incarceration. she met Malcolm X in 1963 and formed a close friendship, organized and nurtured events for Japanese writers and Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors to meet with him, and served as a member of his Organization for Afro–American Unity. she was present when he was assassinated in 1965, and a Life photo depicted her holding him after his tragic death. during an interview, she stated that he “certainly changed my life. I was heading in one direction, integration, and he was going in another, total liberation, and he opened my eyes.” she advocated as part of the Young Lords Party, against the Vietnam War, founded Asians for Action to spur Asian solidarity with Black liberation struggles, raised awareness of incarceration of Japanese people during WWII and advocated for reparations, co-founded Asians for Mumia to organize Asian advocacy for release of Mumia Abu–Jamal, advocated for Assata Shakur, and demanded justice for Vincent Chin. she and Angela Davis discussed their individual, intersecting, and collective experiences in Mountains That Take Wing in 2009. her granddaughter, @a.kochiyama, scholar–activist and community builder, published “Reflections on My Grandma Yuri, Malcom X, and the Past, Present, and Future of Black–Asian Solidarity” in 2020. we are inspired by her intersectional approach, spanning many movements and minoritized and marginalized communities. may we all learn from Kochiyama’s dedication and intentionality, and strive to apply it to our everyday work as writers, artists, educators, activists, leaders, colleagues, students, humans. #dei #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋

our #womenshistorymonth #whm 2024 educational series of historical figures past and present continues, with Zitkála–Šá, also known as “Red Bird,” an important figure in Indigenous history. she expressed conflict about her experience at boarding school—she found joy in writing and playing violin; however, was traumatized by losing her heritage and being forced to cut her hair. after returning to live with her mother on Yankton Indian Reservation, she felt displaced and returned to the school wherein she taught. she began teaching at another boarding school, during which time she returned to Yankton and was disturbed by the state of her roots, with white settlers having stolen the land. through her published works in @theatlantic and @harpersmagazine, she critiqued the boarding school system and loss of identity, and as a result, was fired from her job. she went on to edit American Indian Magazine and co-founded the National Council of American Indians. overcoming struggles with assimilation and identity conflict, she courageously gave voice to her people through her works. Zitkála–Šá’s legacy is rooted in Indigenous feminism and anti-colonial resistance, and we are inspired by her bravery. may we all strive to do more work in protecting Indigenous peoples, culture, and land. #dei #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋

we continue our #womenshistorymonth #whm 2024 educational series of historical figures past and present, with Susette La Flesche Tibbles ("Bright Eyes"), a prominent figure in Indigenous history. she was an advocate for Indigenous rights and education, and worked tirelessly to protect the land and culture of her people against encroachment and assimilation by white settlers. her legacy includes preserving Omaha culture through writings and advocacy, highlighting often-overlooked contributions of Indigenous women to history. we are inspired by her resilience and determination in protecting Indigenous peoples, culture, and land—under-discussed topics among systems and society overall. may we all strive to do more work in this area. #dei #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋

3/24/2024, 3:59:26 AM

our “celebrating women/womyn/womxn’s history” 2024 educational series of historical figures continues this month. as part of this series, we are highlighting @rowanuniversity division of #dei leadership team members who identify as women/womyn/womxn. today we recognize Dr. Janelle Alexander (pictured above, left), who serves as division AVP. in Dr. Alexander’s words: “When asked about the significance of Women’s History Month, it’s about shedding light on the often overlooked narratives of extraordinary women. From pioneering scientists to trailblazing leaders, each woman’s journey speaks volumes about resilience, courage, and determination. Women’s History Month commemorates the collective strength of women’s voices, which have transcended boundaries, united communities, and challenged societal norms. These voices have sparked movements, shattered glass ceilings, and propelled us toward a more just and equitable future. This Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate the diverse voices of women—voices that have united, protested, led, resisted, risen, innovated, enlightened, and engaged. By honoring these voices, we acknowledge the profound impact of women on our past, present, and future. While I deeply honor and recognize the contributions of all women, I want to take a special moment to spotlight Sandra Douglass Morgan [pictured above, right]. As the first Black and Asian woman to serve as an NFL team president, Sandra’s leadership and trailblazing spirit serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the resilience and determination of women to break barriers and drive change.” #deiwordsofwisdom #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋 📸 of Dr. Janelle Alexander, self-submission 📸 of Sandra Douglass Morgan, Las Vegas Raiders

last week, we featured Emma Ka’ilikapuolono Metcalf Beckley Nakuina as part of our #womenshistorymonth #whm 2024 educational series of historical figures, and this week, we recognize her fellow suffragist, Wilhelmina Kekelaokalaninui Widemann Dowsett. the Hawaiian Kingdom was overthrown in a coup d’état in 1893, and Hawai’i was annexed to the United States in 1898. Dowsett and Nakuina organized for women’s voting rights on the islands, and Dowsett launched the first Native Hawaiian suffrage group in 1912. both territory and mainland residents were against granting Asian women suffrage; however, she advocated to include them. although passed by the Hawaiian Senate, the House delayed proceedings and a long battle ensued. she died in 1929, and in 1959, Hawai’i was made 50th state and all residents had full voting rights. we are inspired by her dedication to unifying Native Hawaiian and Asian women during a time of tension, and her fight for the future of the islands. #dei #rowanproud 🦋🦋🦋
