Dad shuffled towards the microphone, hands in pockets, nerves beating through his chest. As the drinks slowed down and the dance-floor came to a standstill, my chest tightened with second-hand anxiety. Is Dad okay? What stories will he share? Will my friends understand his English? It was the weekend of my 21st birthday and I had booked out a bar to celebrate. The room was filled with friends from all walks of life, but my Dad was an honoured guest. We had recently experienced the miracle of rebirth and reconciliation, and we were excited to share the story with anyone who would listen. -- My entrance into adulthood wasn’t pretty. Intoxicated by quick love and cheap thrills, my birthdays became a yearly reminder of my refusal to grow up. Flirting with forbidden fruit, I stubbornly believed that playing with fire would keep my soul alive, but I soon learned the consequences of dancing too close to flame. With my heart singed and broken, I walked through church doors in a desperate search for answers and found myself in the shoes of the Adulterous Woman. Standing in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, she was deserving of condemnation, yet shielded by Mercy: “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:11) The Saviour’s words left me in awe. The only One qualified to throw sticks and stones was nailed to the tree in my place. Who was I to deserve such forgiveness? To this day I cannot answer. That’s the beauty of saving grace—it’s a gift that I did not earn and a favour that I cannot lose. With my heart overflowing with praise, I sobered up to a life of love and self-control. Following the Saviour felt natural and joyful, until I discovered the calling to forgive my enemies—starting with my dad. How could I, when I had spent my life running away from the pain? With brute strength, I tried to obey the Law with the religion of Do Better, but I failed over and over with bitterness and resentment. Dad doesn’t deserve it. Why do I have to be the bigger person? Scrambling to succeed, she quickly learned that the top was an insatiable place, for no accomplishment could ever satisfy the Law’s demands.⠀ ⠀ Her striving filled her home with accolades, and yet it remained void of love and validation. Holding tightly to her trophies, she continued to feel the lashes of Pharaoh’s whip. "Lazy!" "Failure!" "Not good enough!" People thought that she was greedy for success, when in reality, she was hungry for the warmth of a hug.⠀ ⠀ Wearied and alone, she became vulnerable to love promised with seduction’s touch. Drawn to sweet words promising princes and palaces, her heart was lured into pits and graves. "Of course, you’re unlovable, you’ll never be good enough." The Accuser’s voice was loud and relentless, but he remained her little secret. After all, Popular Girls don’t get rejected. Class Clowns don’t cry. ⠀ ⠀ With her heart broken and buried, darkness became her closest friend. By day, she masked the pain with tacky make-up and cheap jokes. By night, she lay intoxicated in the arms of strangers. The world kept telling her that quick love would quench her thirst, so why did each drink taste like petrol dashed with fear?⠀ ⠀ In the search for answers, she found her story in the pages of God’s word. Sharper than a double-edged sword, His divine eye pierced through every pretence. When I started my blog, I committed to sharing ‘honest words from a hope-filled heart’. In a filtered world consumed by fake news, I wanted my readers to see my humanity and the reason for my hope. For this reason, I’ve shared my childhood wounds that have contributed to adult insecurities. I’ve shared my struggles with Christianity, leadership, internalised racism, and mental health.⠀ ⠀ Many people have asked me how I feel about having such intimate thoughts ‘out there’ for the world to critique. I have to admit it’s terrifying. People judge and trolls exist, but what empowers me to hit the publish button is the knowledge that the only Reader whose opinion matters already knows me fully and loves me completely:⠀ ⠀ “You have searched me, Lord,⠀ and you know me.⠀ You know when I sit and when I rise;⠀ you perceive my thoughts from afar.⠀ You discern my going out and my lying down;⠀ you are familiar with all my ways.⠀ Before a word is on my tongue⠀ you, Lord, know it completely.”⠀ (Psalm 139:1-4)⠀ ⠀ How well does God know me? Very well. My pen serves a God who is omniscient, meaning he is all-knowing, all-seeing, and all-wise. Far from simply knowing what I look like without my BB Cream on, my God is fully acquainted with the intricacies of my mind, heart, and soul. While I can trick and hide from humans, God has the sight to expose every invisible thought, emotion, and motive.⠀ ⠀ God sees my inconsistencies and insecurities. He knows when my true self doesn’t match up with my online presence. He knows when I’m facing the world with a brave face. He sees the guilt and shame that I shoulder in secret. He knows what I have done and what I’m scared to do. He knows the words that I will speak before they even leave my mouth! No matter my image under the spotlight, God sees all and knows exactly who I am.⠀ ⠀ Being seen and known by an omniscient God was once a terrifying idea, but I have learned that it is safe to be candid because His knowledge and love for me go hand in hand. Heavenly Father, ⠀ ⠀ We praise you for you are our loving Maker, the One sustaining heaven and earth. We praise you because although you could have remained a distant deity, in love, you chose to reveal yourself to mankind. We see your power in creation, your wisdom in Scripture, and your love and mercy in the sacrifice of your Son. ⠀ ⠀ In this moment of prayer, we ask that you silence our anxieties and distractions so that we can remember who you are—a powerful and generous God who delights in helping and providing for His children. Although we live in a world that tells us to fight for autonomy, help us to lay our burdens into your capable hands, to let our guards down, and to be at true rest in your presence. ⠀ ⠀ Father, we confess to you the moments this week where we have failed to acknowledge you as our God and Maker. We confess our fixation on our own hustles and desires, that we fail to ask for your kingdom to come or your will to be done in our lives. ⠀ ⠀ We confess that our hearts are prone to wander, because we believe that we can have the ‘good life’ apart from you. ⠀ ⠀ We confess that we doubt your Word--choosing to suppress your wisdom and to diminish your attributes, so that we end up believing in a false god formed by human emotion, tradition and logic. ⠀ ⠀ We confess that though we are recipients of your mercy, we can be really resentful about extending it to others. ⠀ ⠀ Father forgive us. ⠀ ⠀ Help us to love you and our neighbour as you have called us to do. Give us faith to surrender our false gods and idols, so that we can worship you with an undivided heart. Give us compassion to love the vulnerable in our city—and that like you, we too will care for the fatherless and foreigners, the elderly and disabled, the lonely and the sick. Heavenly Father, ⠀ ⠀ We praise you for the ways in which you have weaved power and beauty in creation. We see your infinite nature in the vastness of the horizon, and your tender mercies in the afternoon breeze. We see your majesty on mountain peaks and your creative wisdom in the complexity of the human body.⠀ ⠀ Father, who else can claim to have knowledge as you do?⠀ What human invention matches your intelligent design?⠀ What artwork can rival the colours of your sunsets?⠀ When we stop to consider the work of your hands, we can see that you are alone are God, and worthy of all our worship.⠀ ⠀ Father, though you have saved and adopted us into your great kingdom, we confess that we are distracted creatures who rebel against your throne. Although you promise us an eternity where every tear will be wiped away, we are fearful creatures who compromise to secure the “best life now”.⠀ ⠀ We confess that our hearts are prone to wander, and that we spend so much of our time bowing before the gods of success, relationships, comfort and pleasure—living anxious and frustrated lives because our kingdom didn’t come, and our will wasn’t done. World news has been weighing heavy on my heart. ⠀ Sickness, death, injustice, abuse, terrorism and persecution. ⠀ When will it end? ⠀ What can humanity do to help? ⠀ What hope do we have?⠀ ⠀ I have been seeking comfort in the promises of Psalm 9 where God is described as a righteous JUDGE who rules with fairness (v8), a REFUGE for the oppressed and troubled (v9), a KING who will never abandon or forget the afflicted (v10, 12, 18). ⠀ ⠀ - Unlike world powers who can turn their backs on the vulnerable, God will never forget the needy or ignore the cries of the afflicted.  ⠀ - Unlike human rulers who are bound by time and subject to death our good God is immortal. And because His reign is forever we can trust that Goodness—not wickedness—will have the final word.  ⠀ - Unlike human courts who have the capacity for bias, corruption, and self-preserving motives, God’s judgment is perfectly fair and no secret can escape His divine eye. ⠀ - Unlike human governments who are incapable of caring for every social justice issue, God is an ever-present refuge for the needy and oppressed. He is not only willing but able and powerful to act.  ⠀ - Unlike human abusers who will sacrifice the needs of others for personal power, our God sacrificed His Son for the sake of His abusers. Because of Jesus, even rejects and rebels can stand before Him as righteous. ⠀ ⠀ Without a God, earthly suffering is truly purposeless. What’s the point? ⠀ Why bother enduring? ⠀ Why not live for self-preservation and not sacrifice?⠀ Knowing the God of Psalm 9, the sovereign One who will return to wipe every tear is my source of comfort and peace. ⠀ ⠀ Our world may be broken, but because a righteous Judge exists, it is never without hope. ⠀ ⠀ Because Jesus conquered death, the story won't end in ashes. ⠀ ⠀ “But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish.” - Psalm 9:18⠀ ⠀ —⠀ ⠀ Let's encourage each other to look upwards and forwards - what gives you hope?
