The Colours of Volcán Cerró Negro . . . Located only 16 miles from the city of León, the Cerro Negro Volcano at 167 years of age is the youngest volcano in Central America and one of the most active in Nicaragua. When it last erupted in 1999, boulders tumbled down the western slope, creating a rocky, ascendable path. On the opposite side, the wind deposited dark, smooth ash. This unique pairing of terrains and one adventurous man has since put Cerro Negro on many travelers’ wish list for one thing: volcano boarding. This once in a life time experience involves a bumpy ride through small villages and farmlands up an ashy sandy road, an hour-long hike past four craters that belch sulfur and dry heat, slipping into a bright orange or green jumpsuit, and finally sledding on a plywood board down the cindery flank of this still-active volcano, accelerating as the incline steepens. The current speed record holds at 60 miles per hour. We didn’t go nearly as fast but thoroughly enjoyed the hike up and the ride down and actually wished to give it another go right away. Did you know?? Sierra Leone Airways was the national airline of Sierra Leone, established in 1958 and operated out of Lungi International Airport in Lungi, Sierra Leone. It was originally formed as the country's national carrier following the government's withdrawal from the West African Airways Corporation partnership. The airline later rebranded as Sierra Leone Airlines in collaboration with Alia/Royal Jordanian Airlines. After a temporary suspension of operations in 1987, services resumed under the name Sierra National Airlines in 1990. In 2004, the airline faced challenges with its UK sales and reservations structures but successfully reinstated scheduled flights between London Gatwick Airport and Lungi International Airport. Expansion plans were also underway to include destinations such as Liberia, Accra, Abidjan, Johannesburg, and Dubai. The main mission of our Japan project back in February was to take a stroll up the majestically volcanic Mt Yotei, ski into the crater, walk up again, and ski down the outside straight into the nearest onsen, drink a beer, buy all the snacks at 7eleven and then enjoy the accomplishment of getting through all that suffering for a few nice turns. One of the best possible type two fun kind of days. It’s been a week! The travel world remains a wonderful and wild spot these days. Client emergencies, weather delays, and government advisories. And the fun is continuing all weekend!
