Even with cloud cover, things are looking bright at Stone Zoo today. Our solar array project is complete and the panels are set to provide about 95% of Stone Zoo’s electrical needs! We celebrated this important milestone this morning with State Senator Jason Lewis and State @representative_day, who secured $3 million for the solar array project in 2021 from the Commonwealth to make this clean energy project happen. Our partners at @WeAreSolarKal, the leading solar advisory and marketplace for commercial real estate in the U.S., and Solect Energy, a full-service solar developer, also joined us for this morning’s official ribbon cutting. . Conservation is the cornerstone of Zoo New England’s mission, and this solar project aligns perfectly with our mission to protect wildlife and the planet. The solar panel array is constructed over the zoo parking lot to harness the abundant energy of the sun, while also providing shade and protection from rain to our guests all year long. Just another day at the office for the adorable ringtails at Stone Zoo. These agile little climbers recently moved into a new habitat at Stone Zoo that illustrates an historic association with humans. Ringtails were a welcome fixture in frontier mines and offices of Mexico and the western United States to control rodents. The animal care team at Stone Zoo designed this new, larger "mine office" to give the ringtails ample space to climb, explore and lounge. Of course, the ringtails don't think it's an office. For them, it has all the comforts of home with food, water, plenty of opportunities for the keepers to hide enrichment and cozy spots to rest.
