Women of Kashmir (Never Without Their Huqqa Pipes) —- During the Vedic period (2500-1500 B.C.), women in Kashmir enjoyed freedom and societal involvement, being educated alongside boys and having a say in marriage at ages 16-17. In the Age of Brahmins (1500-2500 B.C.), changes began, with education mainly for higher society girls, marriage at 16, and some choice in partners. From 500 B.C. to A.D. 500, societal pressure for early marriage at 9-10 emerged, sidelining girls’ education and choice in marriage. The subjugation of women, outlined by MANU, dictated dependence on father, husband, and sons. Over the years after the Dogra Rule, Kashmiri women held high social status, sometimes revered, with historical records citing their active political roles and ownership of property. They embraced fashion and cultural sophistication, evidenced by their attire and hairstyles depicted in art and literature. How do you think times have changed for the women of Kashmir? #TheCultureGully #Kashmir

I started @theculturegully 7 years back as a medium to share my love for art, culture and history. India has so much to offer beyond the Taj Mahal, Gateway of India and I wanted The Culture Gully to be an avenue for people to look at India beyond its monuments; to learn from its different ethnicities, people and traditions. At times, I do contemplate putting my face behind all the videos because of the messages I get asking who is behind the page. It’s always not easy to put yourself out there. But I promise to come out and educate you all through our videos and show the world the true essence of this beautiful country despite its various flaws. If I recount my most memorable experience in India then it has to be the leopard safari in Jawai, Rajasthan with the @brijhotels. It’s a different joy to see our animals happy in their natural habitat with their families. The calm, the joy and the love on their faces is worth seeing. What has been your most memorable experience in India? #TheCultureGully #Jawai #Rajasthan #JawaiIndia #JawaiBandh

Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia was a man of secular principles, which was also reflected in the architectural details of his haveli, where the main gates of his haveli bore two frescoes - one of Lord Ganesha and the other of Guru Nanak with his companions Bala and Mardana in attendance. Though the surviving facade still has these propitious frescoes in a damaged form, only a few feet above, cow-dung cakes have been plastered on the wall - showing scant regard to the prized building. A portion of this building, which housed the local girl's higher secondary school till the 1960s, fell victim to apathy in the last four decades. With reinforcement on the sides and the rear of this historic structure, the facade can still be preserved. Raja Mahal is the oldest building within the fort of Orchha. The foundation of this palace was laid by Rudrapratap Dev, the founder of the state of Orchha, and was completed in 1565 during the reign of Madhukar Shah. The strong, bold construction and expansive nature of this palace, coupled with the intricate patterns and jaali work, is a testimony to the amazing talent of the artisans and craftsmen of the time. Built in a square configuration, the entrance of this palace faces the east. Another gateway faces the north, leading one to the Diwan-i-Aam. There is an open terrace above the Diwan-i-Aam, believed to have been used by the royal family for shows on moonlit nights.   #INDIAPICTURES #storiesofindia #_coi #Igramming_india #indianphoto #india_gram #india_undiscovered #yourshot_india #TheCultureGully #_soi #incredibleindia #travelrealindia #discover_india #instagood #photooftheday #YourShotPhotographer #photography #instagramhub #natgeo #NGTIndia #instagood #art @natgeotravellerindia @bbc_travel @outlooktraveller @artofvisuals @ulonelyplanetindia @incredibleindia @history @pocket_bnw @unesco @lonelyplanet @natgeo @lonelyplanetmagazineindia

The tank known as Bakhtawar Sagar was originally commissioned by the ruler Bakhtawar Singh as a famine relief measure in 1804. Its embellishments, in the form of twelve red sandstone chhatris, were only completed by 1813. It soon became a major landmark for the people of the city, with whom it was a tradition to compute rainfall by recording the number of steps that were submerged in the water every year at the end of the monsoon, and comparing it with the level of previous years. The tank also became the focal point of the community’s social and cultural life. From the time of Bakhtawar Singh it became the site for the mela held every year at Teej, in which the ruler played an important part. It is still the main site for Teej celebrations in Alwar. James Ricalton, author of an accompanying book that described each view, said of the tank: “This pool with the beautiful buildings by which it is surrounded, with the Fort above commanding a view of the entire city and valley, constitutes one of the most lovely views in India…..towards the west are several handsome temples of Vishnu; northward are other temples and shrines hidden among umbrageous trees; and beyond those exquisite kiosks, you see the splendid cenotaph of Bakhtawar Singh….Ostentatious peacocks and countless rock-pigeons wander unmolested over its marble pavements.” SAGAR JALASHAY, ALWAR, RAJASTHAN Thoughts by ILF Expert Swapna Liddle @liddleswapna #indiafound #indialostandfound #amitpasricha #panorama #panoramist #travelrealindia #discover_india #india_undiscovered #theculturegully #unesco #incredibleindia #instagood #igramming_india #india_gram #instagood #photooftheday #photography #indianphoto #storiesofindia #_soi #_coi @gopro @goproindia @incredibleindia @unesco @unescoworldheritagesites @outlooktraveller @cntravellerindia @natgeotravellerindia @bbc_travel @pocket_bnw

The Anantashayana Vishnu, a massive open-air rock-cut figure of the Hindu deity, Vishnu, carved around the early 9th century in Saranga village, Odisha, is situated on the Bramhani River's left bank. Also known as Anantashayi Vishnu, the phrase means "sleeping on the snake Shesha”. It is believed that under the open sky, the Vishnu image occupies an area of almost 15.4 metres (51 ft) in length and 7 metres (23 ft) in breadth, with a thickness of 0.7 metres (2 ft 4 in). According to research on its "idiom and crown", the figure dates back to the Bhaumakara reign in central Odisha in the first quarter of the 9th century CE. The ancient records talk about the Nandodhbahav feudatory rulers, the followers of Vaishnavism. They were influential in procuring the carvings of two large rock-cut images of Vishnu - one at Saranga and the other at Dankal, both in the upper Brahmani River valley. According to historical records, with the donations they provided to carve the rock-cut sculptures and temples, the Bhaumakara monarchs marked their kinship with Vaishnavism. The terms Anantashayi Vishnu and Anantashayana Vishnu, used to denote this particular depiction of the Creator and Preserver in the Hindu pantheon of divinity, literally translates to “Vishnu sleeping on a serpent Shesha". Shesha, also known as Sheshanaga, the snake deity and Nagaraja, king of all serpents, is a primordial entity of creation. According to mythology, it is believed that Shesha holds all the planets of the universe on his shoulders and eternally bellows the majesties of Vishnu from all his mouths in the Puranas. Known as Ananta Shesha, the "Endless-Shesha," or Adishesha, the "First Shesha", when he uncoils, time goes forward and creation occurs; when he coils back, the cosmos ceases to exist. As per popular folklore, the Anantashayana sculpture has been created naturally by the speeding currents of the river. Carved from natural sandstone, Vishnu is represented with four limbs, each with a Chakra in the upper right hand, a Shankha in the upper left hand, a Gada, and a symbolic lotus in the lower left hand. The serpent Shesha's (Ananta's) hoods encircle Vishnu's head. It is depicted with pointed features like a chin, a prominent nose, and a crown on its head known as Kiritamukuta, a tall conical crown, the typical appearance of Vishnu. The concept of showcasing the creator god, Brahma, seated in meditation, with a lotus pattern emerging from his navel, is spectacularly portrayed. It is said that the sculptor had perceived the river bank as the Kshirasagara, or cosmic ocean from which Brahma formed the universe. Scholars have expressed that the yearning to shape these sculptures with reflective emotions of "vigour and energy" was stimulated by the expressions represented in the rock cut temples of Ellora and Elephanta in Maharashtra, as well as the Mahabalipuram temples in Tamil Nadu. One of the many stairways at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad. A historic structure that has served as a stairway to heaven for generations of brilliant, bright, young minds. The pressing need for a management institution in India came around after the 1950’s when many entrepreneurs, researchers and pioneers pointed out that there was no formalised management education, with businesses mainly being run as family-based organisations. Following independence, as the socio-economic framework and business structure of the nation developed, there was a sharp rise in management associations in cities such as Bombay, Madras, Bangalore and Delhi. This was a time when colleges such as the Harvard Business School had already gained recognition and importance. The seed for formalised management education was long sowed, and with that two IIM’s were set up. One in Ahmedabad and the other in Calcutta. Ever since, these stairs have been silent witnesses to the journeys and the growth of many ambitious young minds! Exposed local red bricks, tall glass doors and windows welcome the IIM, Ahmedabad faculty and students. The modern, contemporary piece of art and vernacular architecture brings to life an expanse of over one hundred acres of land in the heart of Ahmedabad city. Commissioned to be designed by the National Institute of Design in 1962, American architect Louis Kahn designed and built it with the assistance of the then budding architect B.V. Doshi. This was a project which Kahn dedicated almost ten years to and is now a structure studied by architecture students and admired by tourists from all over the world. B.V. Doshi on the other hand, went on to build and design many education institutes after IIM, Ahmedabad. Today, several debates have erupted as a small part of the historic edifice was broken down. With institution heads stating that the strength of certain wings of the structure are compromised making it unsafe, architects, historians, alumni as well as Kahn’s children have written appeals and pleas to preserve IIM’s built heritage. Hindu mythology suggests that the historic city of Benaras was founded by Lord Shiva. So it is no surprise that a partially submerged Shiva Temple is what draws people to visit Scindia Ghat. Legend has it that the temple has been sinking ever since its inception, one hundred and fifty years ago and will eventually submerge completely, unable to bear the weight of the ghat. The narrative says that there was a boy named Man Singh, who did not approve of his mother’s relationship with a gentleman. He decided to cut all ties with his mother. With the objective of clearing all debts, he arrived at Benaras and built this temple, the Ratneshwar Shiva Temple. When his mother arrived at the temple and learned of her sons plan, enraged, she cursed the temple. It is believed, ever since, that this temple remains submerged under water. Benares, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city, draws tourists from all over the world. Every nook and corner in what was previously called Kashi, has a story to tell. A mere fourteen kilometres from the city is the majestic Ramnagar Fort. Wooden boats float away in the Holy Ganges by the fort. This historic edifice was once the home to the King of Benares. Maharaja Balwant Singh in the 18th century commissioned the building of the red sandstone fort, with intricately carved balconies and a sprawling, open courtyard. What was once the Darbar Hall of the Raja, is now a museum for tourists. Jewel encrusted furniture, exquisite old clocks, ivory tools, historic weapons, armoury, beautiful silk costumes and an astronomical clock are some of the many antiques displayed at the museum. Though unfortunately not maintained brilliantly, the fort along with the museum and temple it houses are a must visit for the history seeker. A good ghost that drives away bad ones. Intrigued? Read on… Since ancient times in India, fire has been revered as a means of purification for each entity in this world and next. In the picture that you see above, panai patram (palm leaves) are being burnt on the day of Poornima, in the month of Kartika, (symbolically representing the rituals performed during Dussehra). This tradition retains the goodness in all devotees that visit the temple and burn their evil and inauspicious thoughts and karmas (works). Well, you are what your thoughts are. Let’s decode the title now. The good ghost that I was talking about can be seen in the picture above, just upon the intersection of the two walls. He is sitting with a bull figure of the pious Nandeshwara (the vehicle of Lord Shiva). With huge moustaches and a gigantic belly, the Shankha bhoot - a good ghost - fights terrible and dreadful ghosts, which come as obstacles to the devotees while performing rituals in the temple. Again, these ghosts can come in any form, large and small and even as tiny thoughts! It was indeed enlightening to know about how a single picture can have so many stories embedded in it. These intricate traditions, narrated to me by Pt. Kailash Natham from the temple are precious, like thin threads that help weave the complete cloth of Hindu temple culture. In Hindu culture, every small or big event of life is a celebration. Going by its philosophy, life itself is a celebration, full of joy, music and dance, keeping God in the centre of it all. While conversing with the priest, Pt. Kailash Natham, I learnt about the complexity of the rituals here. Each homam or yagna performed here has a deep meaning, and covers important arenas of our life. After one year of birth, an Aptapoorthi Homam is performed for the child where his/her head is shaved off and ears are adorned with kundalas (earrings). After this, till 59 years of age, Ayush Homam is performed where various gods and goddesses in the Hindu religion are worshipped for the means of acquiring a specific goal. For example, Devi Lakshmi is revered for wealth and Devi Saraswati for knowledge. In this way, for health, power, wealth and many more benefits, this Ayush Homam is performed. On the completion of the 60th year of one's age, a Shashtipoorthi ceremony is performed. At the beginning of the 70th, the Bheema Ratha Shanth; 74th, the Vijaya Ratha Shanthi; 80th, the Sadabhishekam; 90th, the Manguda Abhishekam; and 100th, the Poorna Abhishekam are performed. In the above picture, you can see the Shashtipoorthi ritual being performed inside the premises of the temple. The festivals in this temple are celebrated with great pomp and show, with the Chaitra month (March-April) being the most significant of all. This month is also the first month of the Hindu calendar. During this month, every day, Lord Amritamritunjaya is seated on various vehicles like paliki, ratha, elephant or horse and is taken on a divine ride all around the different places of the village. With that, numerous Dhols (drums) and mantras can be heard, such as the Rudra mantra, Durga stotram, Devtaparayan and many more. Amrithaghateshwara Abhirami Temple. This temple is as exquisite and divine as the name itself. “Amrita means the nectar, Ghata means pot and Ishwar is described as Lord Shiva. So, Amrita Ghateshwara is the nectar pot obtained while churning the milk ocean (also called Samudra Manthan). This nectar pot transformed into a shivalinga on its own, and was hence called swayambhu or self-appeared in nature,” said the head priest of the temple, Pt. Sivashri Thirukadaiyur V. Sundaramurthy Gurukkal. I was indeed blessed to have interviewed him. “From the necklaces of Mahavishnu, the necklaces that shine brighter than the sun, and are made of gold, silver and the navaratnas, emerged the Abha or sheen which transformed into Abhirami Devi.” This is how Pt. Kailash Natham, a priest from the temple, completed the significance behind the name of the temple, ending with Abhirami (Parvati devi). Subsequently, after a conversation with the temple priests, I learnt about the history of the temple, as written in the Vedic scriptures, the rituals, and also how tradition is so personal and yet so encompassing in all forms and features. This conversation is what forms the basis of my three part thought series, starting from this one. The name Thirukadaiyur, in Tamil, means the last village. It describes how the village is situated just 3 to 4 km from the ocean, just on the coastal line. Situated about 300 kilometers from Chennai, this place is quite blissful and naturally prosperous. In this village sits the temple you can see in the above picture. Amritamritunjaya (Lord Shiva) is the presiding deity of the temple. He is called so, because he defeated Dharmaraj Yama or death personified to save his devotee, Markandeya. The main deity is also referred to as “Bilwaranya Shivalinga”, or the shivalinga that emerged from beneath a bel tree/bel forest. To commemorate her husband, Bhimdev I, Rani Udayamati of the Chalukya Dynasty commissioned this step well in 1063 CE. A 1304 CE composition by the Jain monk Merutunga, mentions that Udayamati, the daughter of Naravaraha Khangara, built this stepwell at Patan. The same composition also mentions that the stepwell was commissioned in 1063 and was completed after 20 years. . . Alongside the coy apsaras one would find the more fierce yoginis. Sometimes described as Kali, the yogini is depicted here with a skull stuck at the end of a human bone, probably a femur. The yogini appears to be dancing to the beats of a drum held by a dwarf. Rani ki Vav, literally the queen’s step well (vav, vapi, baoli, baodi as it is known in various parts of India) was built by Rani Udaymati as a memorial to her husband, the Chalukya/Solanki ruler Bhima Deva in the latter half of the 11th century. The sacred memorial is built entirely below ground and as one descends the seven levels of stairs to reach the bottom, one would appear to have entered an inverted temple. Every nook and cranny of the intricately carved stepwell is sculpted in rich Solanki style and has a profusion of mythological and religious imagery including apsaras, yoginis, nagakanya, ashtadikpalas and icons of Ganesha, Kubera, Surya, Bhairava and Mahishasuramardini. However an inordinate amount of attention appears to have been paid to Vishnu and his various avataras/manifestation, including the rarely depicted Kalki. Buried deep in sand, brought on by the constant flooding of the river Saraswati, the Vav was desilted by the ASI towards the end of the last century. Step wells such as Rani ki Vav not only functioned as reservoirs to store and conserve water in arid areas, especially in summer, they also served as social spaces for people to meet and interact (to a limited extent given the strictures of caste etc.) RANI KI VAV, PATAN, GUJARAT, 11TH CENTURY. This intriguing temple situated in the bounds of Kanpur has an interesting structure. It looks as though the nearly parabolic form of the temple draws its inspiration from a Buddhist Stupa. In place of a spherical dome, the form is nearly parabolic and resembles a traditional temple shikhara. Both the temple and the idol of the preceding deity are less ornate but the sanctum sanctorum has a divine feel to it. Placed on a high plinth and surrounded by open spaces, the temple has a unique serenity attached to it. It might not be an elaborate ornate structure, but it has an edge to it owing to the wonderous properties of the construction materials and techniques. In addition to predicting the monsoons adequately, the temple is equipped with a feature called Neela Chakra. This is primarily a lightning conductor which has protected this temple from being hit by lightning. Though the composition of this disc still remains a mystery, it helps in keeping this marvelous structure and the deity intact for the devotees. The gardens of Kashmir were idyllic retreats for the Mughal royal family, who would come and camp in them for several days. The Mughal camp usually consisted of tents, and some of them were very elaborately decorated, with rich textiles suited to the status of the royal occupants. Soon pavilions began to be added to the gardens as well, and at the very basic level, the structure of a pavilion is very like the structure of a tent. It consists of a roof supported on pillars, with sides that could either be left open to let in light and air, or closed with draperies of fabric or other material to provide privacy or a shelter from the elements. The pillared walls of the majestic complex, built atop a lotus-shaped plan, are covered in intricate carvings and jagged inscriptions from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and other ancient texts. The temple encompasses three different yet axially-aligned and integrated structures of Surya Kund, Sabha Mandapa and Gund Mandapa. The idol of Surya, which the sun's first rays kissed around the equinox, was kept in the Guda Mandapa, the sanctum of splendor and faintness. The assembly hall, also known as the Sabha mandapa, symbolized the spiritual glories of the times when people flocked to every available space to pray under a canopy supported by 52 incredibly intricately carved pillars. The majestic 100 sq m stepwell used to aid people for the ceremonial ambulation before prayers, and was guarded by no less than 108 shrines of different deities, leading the way to the Torana or the stone doorway proceeding towards the temple. There resides no idol of Surya in the sanctum today, neither does the roof above it, but the faceless sculptures watch each and everything with a blank expression still. The temple courtyard doesn’t hold any prayers or festivals now, but the sanctity of the space has not been forgotten by the curious souls that wander around here. Each day when the sun goes down, leaving the sky stained with beautiful orange hues and the birds fly back to their nests, the dominating silhouette of the Sun Temple stand out as a proud reminder of the glorious past. The shattered soul of ancient Hindu spirituality keeps living on inside the sculpted walls. The renowned Sun Temple of Modhera is situated against the backdrop of the River Pushpavati, encircled by a terra-formed landscape of blossoming trees and the chirping of birds. The Sun Temple ruins at Modhera are artefacts from a bygone era when veneration for the natural elements—fire, air, earth, water, and sky—was at its height and shared space with a wide variety of Vedic god appearances. In 1027 AD, Bhimdev I of the Chalukya dynasty established the temple complex as a gift to Surya, the sun deity. The city of Modhera has seen numerous transformations and has housed settlements over time, with roots going back to antiquity. Its majestic grandeur is complemented by the sight of the River Pushpavati blending flawlessly with blossoming trees and the pleasant song of birds. The terra-formed garden that surrounds the temple piques one's aesthetic senses, while the poetic inscriptions on the sandstone walls enchant and transport visitors back in time to numerous hitherto untold tales. Paintings of Hindu epic stories, such as Nala Damayanti (a set of forty-seven miniature paintings), are depicted in one of the galleries. Modern versions of the Dashavatara paintings (ten avatars of the Hindu god Vishnu) are also on display in the Museum's ante-chamber. These are an unusual set of modern art paintings. Family portraits of Jammu and Kashmir's Dogra rulers are on display in the Durbar Hall's entrance gallery. A few chambers on the first and second floors house the library, which has a collection of rare antique books (25,000) ranging from religion, philosophy, and political science to fiction. An exclusive chamber in the museum, once the living quarters of the Maharani (later known as the Maharajmata) Tara Devi, is conserved and exhibited in its original form, containing a silver bedspread, period furniture, photographs, the decoration of the Crown of India presented to her in 1945, her personal items of clothing, and the unique Victorian bath room.
