The Parijaat tree is situated in the Kintoor, near Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India. The area has a variety of ancient temples for worship, where Hindus regularly go and pray to a pantheon of gods. In 2010, concerns were raised over the Parijaat tree’s survival through the years. A five member panel was formed from the Narendra Deo University of Agriculture and Technology in Faizabad. One of the members on the board was head of crop physiology and stated in a meeting that the tree was suffering damage from several problems that need to be tackled. A panel of scientists started working on the tree in 2010, and the tree still stands strong as ever in 2019. The legend of the temple is associated with Narasimha, an avatar of Hindu god Vishnu appearing for Hanuman and Lakshmi. The image of Anjaneyar is 18 ft (5.5 m) tall, making it one of the tallest images of Hanuman in India. (🇺🇸 English version in comments) A partir du IXe siècle, les beautés célestes semi-divines (surasundari) sont progressivement devenues les occupantes habituelles des parois extérieures des temples de l’Inde du Nord. Contribuant à la beauté de la demeure du dieu qui y est honoré, elles ont été représentées par kyrielles et de multiples façons au cours des siècles. Cette surasundari remarquable de sensualité n’était que l’une des nombreuses figures féminines similaires couvrant une paroi d’un temple érigé au début du XIe siècle à Ashapuri, au Madhya Pradesh. Selon une inflexion particulièrement érotique, le motif de la surasundari représente parfois la jeune femme se faisant arracher son vêtement par un singe espiègle. Ici, la suransundari semble elle-même se défaire de son vêtement pour dévoiler sa nudité, selon un schéma iconographique non moins courant. Lorsque ces images sont placées à portée de main sur une paroi de temple, l’abrasion fréquente de la poitrine et des parties intimes du corps montre comment des figures divines mineures deviennent souvent isolément l’objet d’un culte populaire dans le système de croyances à plusieurs niveaux qu’est l’hindouisme. La fraîcheur et l’uniformité de l’épiderme de la pierre de cette sculpture suggèrent qu’un tel culte n’a probablement pas eu le temps de se développer dans ce cas précis, le temple que cette surasundari ornait s’étant certainement effondré peu de temps après sa construction.
