Still remember the nerve-racking scramble with @clairewritesmusic to get the film uploaded for the YouTube premiere, to the point that those (lovely) few who saw it for the first time did so not at full resolution! Next up we have Arnold Wesker, The Ventriloquist. I remember this character showing up in the comic and not remembering him until his Animated Series appearance and he then became extremely memorable. The biggest challenge here was making Scarface. I really wanted the head to look like Wesker made him on his own so even went with a sloppier paint job to the face. I had a Tommy gun but decided to update the machine gun a bit. There is going to be a little delay with the next and final figure of Wave 4 "Battle Damaged Batman". Look for him this weekend. The Batman- The Rubberface of Comedy/ The Clayface of Tragedy The series final, seeing Joker develop a weapon that makes everything mouldable only for Ethan Bennet to get infected by it. For a season finale, this two parter works really well for me, it’s basically two stories in one, one being a Joker story and one being a Clayface one. The first part is really good and fun, being your basic Joker plot, he’s got a new toy and is wreaking havoc with it around the city. I like the idea behind Joker Putty, with it being able to turn anything into bouncy rubber. I think we get some really interesting action as Joker escapes the police in a bouncing minivan. We even get a brilliant take on Joker’s origins, referencing the Killing Joke. The story takes a dark tone in the second part, giving us a really good and unique take on Clayface. He’s normally an actor, who through a tragic turn of events gets turned into Clayface. By having a new version of the character, this one being Bruce’s friend Ethan, it really allows for some good new story telling for the character. We get some tragic moments as Ethan loses his mind, his deformity and his firing from the police department just makes him more of a complex villain. The action with Clayface is brilliant too, seeing the heroes work to stop Clayface from getting revenge on the chief was great to see. I like how this story expands on Batman’s relationship with Ethan and Yin. I like how both Batman and Yin now have the same goal, trying to save Ethan. I think seeing the two finally work together was really good. It starts off with Selina Kyle at a Veronica Vreeland fundraiser, she's reformed now and no longer allowed to be Catwoman after making a deal with the judge for freedom. She stares at an extinct statue of a fierce wild cat, and recalls when she was free to be the Cat of Gotham as we hear her give a monologue of her experiences. She aches to break her chains of a normal life and get back to what she loved doing, and who she was. She leaves the fundraiser after a very catty exchange with Bruce and Vreeland but gets picked up by The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Scarface: See, the Bat's not so tough. Comes up against Scarface, he's just another dummy. The next BTAS shot is titled "Read my Lips" and it's the 64th produced and 59th to air. The episode starts with the prize money for a heavy weight fight being transported before being taken by a new gang in Gotham. They easily get away, wearing mask and gloves while taking their winnings to their boss, Scarface, who we don't see. We then cut to Commissioner Gordon and Batman discussing this new gangs ability to plan perfect heist and leaving no evidence. Gordon does happen to have a home video taken by a civilian that Batman takes a look at. He sees that during the gangs getaway a sleeve Rios revealing a tattoo that belongs to a huge thug named Rhino. Batman puts a scare into him, Rhino doesn't answer any questions but runs to the hideout which Batman finds by following him. There we see that Scarface is a puppet controlled by the Ventriloquist, Arnold Wesker. Batman can't believe it, and learns the Ventriloquist has multiple personality disorder and is two separate people in one body. Meanwhile, Scarface feels there must be a double crosser in the gang if Batman is on to them and gives a stern warning to his crew. That night Batman confronts Arnold Wesker while Scarface is asleep, and tries questioning him but he acts like he knows nothing which frustrates Batman. Scarface wakes up calling the Ventriloquist in, while he's gone Batman plants and speaker on Wesker's tie. Batman hears the plan the Ventriloquist has that night and goes to stop them, it's a set up however, due to the fact Scarface found the microphone on the tie. Batman is knocked out, and wakes up hanging over spikes coming face to face...to face with the Ventriloquist and Scarface. I leave the final act for you to discover! Jervis controls people by drugging and hypnotizing them, But the strongest form of mind control he has are the masks he puts on his “Guests”. For goons or regular street thugs he manages to get, he mostly uses cards on them instead of wasting materials to make masks for them. Figuring It would be easier than having Batman break them and forcing him to constantly remake the same ones over and over. Also its a chance to call his thugs the “Card Guards” which amuses him. His goons don’t matter much to him, but if he assigns you a specific character, you are highly important to his “Tea Parties” and are at risk of being forced to attend indefinitely. For his “Tea Party” guest list, he has crafted actual masks for them to wear, in correlation to the Character he assigned to each guest. He does make sure the guests are drugged with his special tea before putting the masks on them. Wouldn’t want to risk having you manage to break free of his control during the party! Or ever. The Batman- Bird of Prey The story sees The Penguin invade Wayne Manor as Bruce is set to make a televised appearance. I think the overall premise of the story is really creative and fun, seeing Batman try to stop the Penguin without having a whole TV crew realise that Batman and Bruce Wayne are the same person. I think the tone of the story is quite consistent with the Penguin being a really fun and silly villain who’s played for laughs but done in a really effective way. The only real dark part of the story are the Penguin’s henchwomen, these creepy silent figures with razor sharp claws. I think the side characters in the TV crew are pretty dull in my opinion, they aren’t characterised that overly well and are just there as sort of another antagonist role, trying to find the next big thing to film. I did like their dynamic with Bruce and Penguin as they just were loving what was going on but I just think they should’ve been explored as characters.
