The end of Camelot! Tulsa's iconic medieval castle themed Camelot Hotel photographed by myself in 2004, long after it had closed in 1996. The $5 million hotel was fit for a queen and a king when it opened in 1965. It wouldn't have been out of place in Las Vegas. The Camelot did a star turn in the movie "Tex". Attempts were made to revitalize it and rebrand it as the Camelot Parkside Hotel but they failed. The hotel’s fall from grace coincided with Tulsa’s free-falling oil based economy during the 1980s. Its glory long faded, the languishing asbestos ridden edifice was demolished in 2007. QuikTrip purchased the 5.9-acre property and demolished the hotel in 2007. According to the Tulsa World, five years later, the convenience store chain built a store on the site, chosen because it was near the spot where QT’s first store opened in 1958. Last time I stayed there was during a raucous High School Party in 1986, and it was a dump by then... made only dumpier by our trashing of the room. My friends Jon Wadley and Ray Hamilton performed a memorable show there in 1990. Their thundering performance had popcorn ceiling debris raining down on the stage. Ahh, memories of Camelot! It’s always sad to see an “unloved” or abandoned tennis court 🙁Here I’ve returned to the Tulsa Memorial High school tennis courts which I attended 1979-82 🎾 We were undefeated tennis state champions 40 years ago in 1981 and it was bittersweet to return, hit a few balls and reminisce 🕕 This high school remains a powerful athletic force in football & basketball however the tennis facilities are in dire need of maintenance as the tennis team uses “LaFortune Park” courts instead 🎾With dwindling school budgets, it’s unlikely things will change anytime soon, but I hope these courts get the “love” they deserve for the future of the high school and local tennis community 👍 #KJtheTennisPro #TennisWall #TennisBackboard #AbandonedTennisCourt #UnlovedTennis #Tulsa #TulsaMemories #MemorialChargers #TulsaMemorial #TulsaMemorialHighSchool #LafortunePark #ScottsdaleTennisLessons 🌵

After 40 years, My son and I popped into what was my first school, John Bates Elementary in Tulsa. Bates had a short lived life as a Tulsa Public School from around 1972-83. TPS schools were closing left and right at the time with budget cuts and declining enrollment. Its students then transferred over to Salk. Since that time, the building had been used as a church, private school, and for the last 20 years as a charter school for K-6: Dove Science Academy. It is now transforming into its next act as a nursing home, according to the staff who showed me around. They confirm the building is still a leaking and constantly breaking edifice like it always was. I took the drone up and you can see the place is crumbling. And with the lack of windows, I can’t imagine this place as a residence. As you can see in the pics, the open classroom concept was done away with long ago but many parts are recognizable including Mr. Carson’s gym and auditorium, the gagateria cafeteria where bean chowder reigned superme, the off limits smoke hole known as the teacher’s lounge, the yellowing clocks which always seemed to tick by very slowly and Mr. Eddings’ principal’s office where my brother and I were regular visitors. I tip my hat to my old alma matter with the lyrics penned by Mrs. Jackson: “John Bates, John Bates school we love so dear. You’re the pride of our hearts John Bates. We will always keep your standards high as the days and the years go by.” #Tulsa #TulsaMemories
