Mingo Valley ✅ The Mingo Valley section of somewhat-east Tulsa (Memorial to Mingo, 4th down to about 21st Street) has been one of my favorite running spots yet during this project. It's quite chill -- not even accounting for the cold drizzle I ran through this morning. The neighborhoods have a somewhat-rural feel with big plots for average sized homes. With decently large trees smoldering autumn foliage, the largely empty streets are a nice place for a walk or run. On the East side of this area, there is access to the Mingo Valley Trail - one of my favorite pedestrian paths that follows the Mingo Valley Creek from right at about 244 down to about 41st Street. Also, no loose aggressive dogs. My "every single street" running of Tulsa too me past a Tulsa icon this morning -- as well as film icon - the house featured in the 1983 Francis Ford Coppola film "The Outsiders" starring C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Diane Lane...and wait, Flea and Tom Waits were in it, too? I need to go re-watch it. Not to mention the Tulsa legend herself, the author of The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton was instrumental in helping Francis Ford Coppola choose Tulsa as the place to shoot the film, consulting him on different recommended locations, (see my post about The Admiral Twin Drive In), helping chaperone many of the young and restless cast members (she reportedly helped Tom Cruise get over a stomach ache by giving raw eggs to drink until he puked) and playing a nurse in the film. This piece of history is nestled in the Crutchfield neighborhood, just Northeast of Downtown Tulsa. This neighborhood has come a long way just in the last few years - even since I was house shopping just a few years ago. Mini-Hoods Edition: North Moeller Heights, Aka: The Rose Bowl District ✅ This was just a 5-mile mini-hood run immediately south of the Rose Bowl between 11th and 15th, Memorial and S 73 E Ave. Over off Memorial, between Admiral and 15th, there are several quaint neighborhoods that feel rural, yet are in the middle of the city. I really like them, as they provide an escape from what feels like neverending "subdivision." The plots are more spacious, though the house sizes remain modest so there feels like room to breathe. This particular neighborhood is connected to a nice probably 2/3 mile crushed gravel walking track around the top of a flood prevention area. #everysingleatreettulsa #everysinglestreet #tulsa #tulsaneighborhoods #exploretulsa #runthe918 #route66 #tulsaroute66
North Kendall-Whittier / South Springdale ✅ A quaint step into the Northside from Kendall-Whittier divided by the railway. I really wish the dog owners were more attentive to their furry friends, as I got caught in a few sticky situations that have caused me to update my kit to deter aggressive pooches with less-than-awesome owners. Someone on Harvard gave me an encouraging honk, almost as though they recognized me (I was running the opposite way down Haskell, so I didn't see them), but it was good to hear. South Springdale (the residential section above Dawson, below Pine) was not nearly as rough as I thought it would be. I had just ran 8 miles in North Kendall-Whittier before heading above the railroad tracks for another 8 miles. I was a tad stiff, achey, about to pee myself from too much Gatorade but then was then blessed with a porta-john on a construction site. That was the motivation (and relief 😌) I needed to keep up the pace. Then, as I shuffled down E Oklahoma Place, I got a warm "My man's gettin' it in!" with a thumbs up from a friendly fella walking back from stores on Pine. Now the area is a hub of cool and funky restaurants of which I’m on a quest to try all of them. TULSA COMMERCIAL/CHEROKEE AIRPARK The 1937 Airport Directory lists Tulsa Commercial Airport as being 5.5 southeast of Tulsa, having a 2,640 sod landing area with "Commercial Airport" and "Tulsa" painted on the roof. This airfield also handled Army flight operations during the war at which time it gained 2 paved runways. In a 1950 aerial photo you can see the four hangars on the south side of the field. By 1954, the airport was no longer in service. The housing addition, Holliday Hills, was soon constructed as well as a shopping center by the same name. However, the main north/south runway was kept as a street (Urbana) and used to have some airport markings on the concrete. House portrait time! Today we’re in the neighborhood of Mayo Meadow, and it’s full of adorable homes! Like most neighborhoods in Tulsa, this land was originally of the Muskogee tribe. It was then sold to Panther Creek Oil Co. and then again sold to the Mayo brothers. Homes began to be constructed in the early 1950s. #themoreyouknow
