I’ve been loving our Sunday hikes, and yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day for it! We conquered Eagle Trail at Peninsula State Park, which is labeled “difficult”, just like me 😉. It was absolutely stunning, as it drops more than 200 feet from atop the bluffs to the bottom. It doesn’t get much cooler than hiking with towering bluffs on one side and mighty water on the other. The best part was seeing a bald eagle soar in from the water - it was the closest I’d ever seen a bald eagle in the wild! On the way back to the car we stopped to enjoy the Eagle Panorama overlook, which offers views of Horseshoe, Strawberry, and Chambers Islands; Welcker’s Point; and THE UPPER MICHIGAN SHORELINE. The day after the eclipse, I started my trip back to DC with a stop in the Ozarks to hike on breathtaking sandstone bluffs carved out by the Buffalo River. You have an almost 180-degree view at several points along the trail. Continuing down to the river, I followed several horse trails until I met the ORT trail to Sneed’s Creek. That required two river crossings and gratefully the water was not too cold or deep. I headed up to Hemmed In Hollow, an unexpectedly large waterfall that felt like something out of the Western US, not Arkansas. Then I turned around and headed back to the bluffs via some winding paths through the forest. Leaves were emerging with their many shades of green and there were delicate wildflowers and flowering trees to enjoy. I read about this part of the Ozarks several years ago and I am so grateful I took the time to visit.
