I PROTAGONISTI Originari di Reggio Emilia, sono stati un gruppo musicale punk rock italiano, ampiamente considerato uno dei più importanti e influenti nell'Italia degli anni Ottanta e conosciuti in tutto il mondo. Autodefinitosi un gruppo di "musica melodica emiliana" e di "punk filo-sovietico", nacquero nel 1982 a Berlino, dall'incontro tra il chitarrista Massimo Zamboni ed il futuro cantante della band Giovanni Lindo Ferretti e si sciolsero in Italia nel 1990, in contemporanea alla crisi della stessa Unione Sovietica. Sono presenti nel film, in totale esclusiva, tutti e quattro i membri originali della band: Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Massimo Zamboni, Annarella Giudici, Danilo Fatur. “Adopting photography as a medium but turning away from photography,” Sugimoto has always been coaxing the relatively young medium and a means to an end into a system of reconfiguring the world. His approach demonstrates the versatility of photography as simultaneously documentation and invention, and ingeniously challenges our presumptions about history, time, and the essence of existence. In his time-traveling “Portraits” series, Sugimoto’s focus on time once again prevails—the past, present, and future are all condensed into the camera’s exposure time. Madame Tussauds in London lent him wax models, which he photographed on-site and after hours. Based on the physical appearance of famous people active within a 500-year time span, including Napoleon, Shakespeare, Rembrandt, etc., who are no longer with us, the figures in wax somehow acquired a flesh-and-blood quality in the “Portraits” series, thanks to Sugimoto’s careful study of Renaissance era works and the conventions of portraiture, and his precise lighting technique. The artist reminds viewers that “If this photograph,” referring to his “portrait” of Henry VIII, “now appears lifelike to you, you should reconsider what it means to be alive here and now.” On a practical level, the wax figures at Madame Tussauds have shrunk and will continue to shrink, due to the nature of wax. Pushing out my old large-format camera’s focal length to twice-infinity―with no stops on the bellows rail, the view through the lens was an utter blur―I discovered that superlative architecture survives the onslaught of blurred photography. “Dream Time” is on view at UCCA Beijing until this Sunday, April 28. The multi-gallery exhibition concludes with “It‘s Always You” (2021) by artist Sin Wai Kin (b. 1991, Toronto, lives and works in London). Breaking the molds of representation and self-representation through drag, “It’s Always You” combines four separate drag roles from Sin’s previous work: The Universe, the pretty boy; The Storyteller, the serious one; The One, a playful chap; and the heartthrob Wai King. A two-channel looping video shows a boy band performing their lead single before fans, namely, visitors of the museum. The song’s lyrics, which the artist wrote, cover the walls of the karaoke-style viewing room, while life-size cutouts of each band member beckon selfies. The immersive setup, uncannily familiar, parodies the replicable marketing strategies of idol groups. The rapport between members of the band deftly achieved by the artist alone destabilizes the assumptions we may have about collectives and ourselves. In today’s world, how can we stay connected while maintaining our individuality and self-identity? How can we keep dreaming about the future in the process of overcoming present challenges? We may never come up with a realistic answer, but already have the possibilities presented in “Dream Time” as starting points. “Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine” presents some of the artist’s signature series, one of them being his “Seascapes” series. “My first personal memory is a seascape.” Aboard a coastal train, Sugimoto, then a boy, had been enthralled by the static-looking seawater and the distant horizon, constant, straight, unwavering. The first “Seascapes” photograph had been taken by the Caribbean Sea in 1980. The series went on to become a lifelong project and one of his most demanding: “Technically, it took almost 10 years to get the quality of what I wanted to show.” Today, over four decades of seascapes feature skies and seas, divided evenly in every instance, and nothing else. To achieve the clean composition of each and endow it with impossible crispness, Sugimoto shoots at a high altitude with, as usual, a large format camera. Therefore, “each wave has to be sharp and clear,” the artist proclaims. “The sea has changed so much less than the land, so when human beings first gained consciousness, moving from an animal to a human state, the seascape might have made a strong impression on their minds. I can share that vision. I can compare my own memory with the first vision of the world.” The sea is credited with originating life, and here it also is where the beginnings of human consciousness and Sugimoto’s memory coincide. In the Central Gallery of the exhibition “Dream Time” at UCCA Beijing, the video in Peng Zuqiang’s most recent installation “Autocorrects” (2023) plays on repeat. The sound of thunder and a telephone signals the beginning of each new loop, a nod to a common feature of 1990s City Pop music videos. Born in Changsha in 1992, the artist brings 20th century Chinese pop music into his audiovisual reflections on amnesia and the dissolution of identity. Throughout the video, the camera follows an individual whose back is turned most of the time as he wanders into airports, onto the platforms of train stations, and elsewhere in an unknown city. The music’s rhythm is almost in sync with the movements of the figure. In the meantime, nonsensical lyrics float in and out of the soundscape, just as words laser-engraved into 16mm film (on which the video is shot) appear and disappear before the viewers’ eyes. In the dark room where the video plays on three separate monitors, the work feels like a dream to encounter. Toward the end of the video, words are chanted in the following order, almost compulsively: “my phone, autocorrects, I, into, you, into me …” “Dream Time” is on view at UCCA Beijing until April 28, 2024. When visiting “Dream Time” at UCCA Beijing, the viewers can experience Wang Yuyan’s newest multimedia installation, “The Sleeping World Turns Around” (2023), that features a wide range of found footage compiled and collaged over two years. The work creates a fictive landscape with projections and artificial lighting, and is not the first in the history of fiction to interrogate the use of technology in planetary and environmental engineering. In this exhibition, a storefront window structure divides Wang’s work into a space of layered projections. The visitor becomes part of the spectacle in this unique filmic experience. The one-way mirror prompts viewers to reflect on how their environment affects their viewing behaviors. In the artist’s opinion, even though life grows increasingly digital, wireless, and reliant upon cloud data, our capacity for imagining the future is increasingly constrained by notions of geologic time and finite resources. Through this project, she hopes to capture a cross section of our age of obsession with visibility and efficiency, as well as the afflictions of our desire for boundless sight and illumination. “Dream Time” is on view at UCCA Beijing until April 28, 2024. “To watch a two-hour movie is simply to look at 172,800 photographic afterimages. I wanted to photograph a movie, with all its appearance of life and motion, in order to stop it again.” — Hiroshi Sugimoto “Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine”is on view between March 23 and June 23, 2024. Walking into the Great Hall of UCCA Beijing, visitors will first see the “Theaters” series that took Sugimoto over 40 years to complete. The artist began shooting inside movie theaters in 1976, where he would match the exposure time of his camera to the length of a film before it played. Closing the shutter at the end of the film, he effectively compressed thousands of frames into a single still image of a glowing white screen. The series illustrates how movie and projection screens illuminate their surroundings, which have included, over the years, palatial and cavernous interiors and the outdoors. These locales are the subjects of sub-series such as “Drive-Ins,” “Opera House,” and “Abandoned Theaters”—the latter is intentionally stored in lead frames and acquired a layer of lead oxide over time, underlining the dilapidation of classic American movie houses. For Sugimoto, “Palace Theater, Gary” (2015) was one of the most challenging photoshoots. The abandoned theater had a collapsing ceiling and no electricity, so Sugimoto had to bring in his own generator to power the film projector and electric heaters to combat the freezing Midwestern winter. Starring Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the 1937 movie eventually lost its identity to the white glow, and the grim surroundings were all that was left in the picture.
