Did you know that the number of youth in foster care is significantly higher than the number of licensed foster homes? This disparity highlights many urgent needs including the two mentioned below. First, we can do more to provide meaningful support to biological families involved with child welfare BEFORE their children enter care. By reducing the number of kids who enter the system in the first place, we reduce the number of foster homes needed to meet the demand. And, biological families deserve as much support as possible to promote family stability and preservation! Secondly, in the meantime, youth in care need more people willing to consider providing temporary foster or permanent adoptive homes to those who need one. As a society and as the church, we have a responsibility to care for our most vulnerable neighbors. Hard to imagine a more vulnerable neighbor than a child in need of a temporary family! In celebration of Black History Month the Fresno Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the Clean Shared Mobility / Network, and the FMBCC Friends Program sponsored and hosted the Sunday Funday in Arte America Park. The Fire Explorers had the opportunity to interact with the youth and expose them to the career of Fire Fighting. The youth had the opportunity to put on turnouts and get a feel for the weight of the equipment. Some seeds were planted and I know we have some future firefighters in our community. In celebration of Black History Month, meet Cadet Miyosi Tennison. Cadet Tennison is the first black female to be a part of our Fire Explorer Program. Cadet Tennison joined the program in July 2022. Cadet Tennison graduated from Edison High School in 2021. She had obtained a basic understanding of the fire service by working with the California Conservation Corps on out-of-county assignments in Butte Magalia with the Corps. Cadet Tennison is employed part-time as a caregiver while she attends school to complete her Emergency Medical Technician program. Cadet Tennison's goal is to complete her EMT and attend the Fresno City College Fire Academy. Through the Explorer Program, Cadet Tennison has gained more self-confidence when it comes to participating in and doing hands-on learning activities. Having better teamwork experience with other explorers, many different unique strategies for taming the life of fire, and most importantly hard work and dedication to get her to the next step in her career. Simulated Fire attack/positive pressure ventilation, forcible entry utilizing the door prop, obtaining a water supply from a hydrant, and operating a ventilation fan. Meet some of the Explorers in the 2022/2023 Class. We are excited to have our largest class of 40 Explorers. Today was the first acclimation to morning physical fitness. We’re proud to say the Fresno Fire Explorers came prepared and finished strong. We didn’t loose anyone to fatigue. The module today was Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and SCBA. For the new cadets, this was the first time in a set of turnouts. When an Explorer becomes a member, they are outfitted with a set of PPE they will use for the time as an Explorer. The introduction to PPE is always an enjoyable class seeing the Explorers proud to look like a fire fighter. Cadet Savanah Jimenez joined the Fire Explorer Program July 2021. Her goal is to become a firefighter. In January 2022, she was accepted to the College of Sequoias Fire Academy. On May 15,2022, Cadet Jimenez graduated from the Fire Academy. She is one step closer to her dream job! The Fresno Fire Explorer Program is often the first phase in starting a career in the Fire Service. We’re so proud of Cadet Jaeckel , Cadet Escobedo, Cadet Dolan and Cadet Holland for being accepted into the FCC Fire Academy fall semester 2022. All four cadets have completed their EMT receiving their National Registry Certification and completing a Fire Tech I class. Completion of those two prerequisites qualifies them for enrollment. The hands on training and life skills they received from the Fire Explorers will give them a little more experience.
