This week the Local History team takes you back to c1950 and a view of the Port Adelaide Workers Memorial on the corner of Commercial Road and St. Vincent Street in Port Adelaide. The original drinking fountain is visible. The Foundation stone for the memorial was laid in November 1918, the base in December 1918 and the Statue of Justice was added in September 1921. The Port Adelaide Workers Memorial, completed in 1921, was created by the United Trades and Labor Council and state Labor party to recognise people who made a significant contribution to promoting workers’ rights in the Port Adelaide community. Every year since then, a local champion for Port Adelaide workers and the community has had their name added to the memorial, connecting our proud past with the ongoing importance of trade unionism for the community today. The Annual Inscription Ceremony takes place on the first Sunday in May.This year, on Sunday 5th May, Michelle Hogan will be posthumously awarded the Rex Munn Award and her name will be added to the Workers Memorial. The Local History team take you back to the Colac Hotel with this photo taken by John Drennan c1982. As late as December 1881 the Licensing Bench refused applications made by Isaac Dyer stating the Colac Hotel was not required. On 15th March 1882, Isaac Dyer again pressed for his application to be approved. With Mr. J. C. Bray acting on his behalf, a number of influential witnesses were called who stated that the Hotel “would be a great convenience to persons engaged at the dock as well as to passengers by sea and mercantile men.” The licence was granted and Isaac Dyer was publican of the Colac Hotel from March 1882 until July 1889. Mr. Daniel Patrick O'Leary, lived at the Colac Hotel, having joined the Adelaide Steamship Company as a steward in 1890. He was fond of music and a foundation member of the Port Adelaide Orpheus Society. Additionally, he was choirmaster of St. Mary's Kooringa Catholic Church, Port Adelaide. In 1903 the Port Adelaide Wednesday Closers Cricket Club held their annual banquet at Mr J. Ginn’s Colac Hotel. It had been a great year for the club. They played 20 matches, won 8, drew 8 and lost 4. You will be surprised to learn that in 1909 Frederick White (licensee of the Colac Hotel) was charged with having permitted euchre to be played at his premises. This was in contravention of section 115E of the Licensing Act 1908. You know: I’ve been talking to school students about music and songwriting since I was 12yrs old. When I was 12, I was one of ten ambassadors representing New Zealand youth at a worldwide youth symposium at @disneyworld in Florida. As part of my trip to the States, however, I was invited to speak at a middle school in Pasadena, CA about the role music and songwriting had played in my life up to that point. Who would have thought that 23 years later I’d be talking about this VERY SAME SUBJECT multiple times on the TEDx stage? Who would have thought that 23years later: I’d be actively coaching this same age group to learn how to harness the power of music and songwriting when it comes to their mental, emotional and social health and well-being?

This week the Local History team takes you back to 1925 and a view of the Exchange Hotel that opened in 1857. Joseph Coleman was awarded the first publican’s licence and the Exchange Hotel actively supported local sporting events including the renowned Port Adelaide Regatta. In 1888 the Exchange Hotel hosted one of the most successful socials conducted by cyclists in the colony. The celebration closed a highly successful S.A Cyclists' Union Sports Intercolonial Race Meeting. Reports from that time read that “wheeling will become as popular in its degree as cricket, for it is an exhibition of speed, endurance, skill, and pluck, to witness which any citizen may take his family without scruple.” The Exchange Hotel served as the gathering spot for council members and politicians. In 1899, it was documented that a political candidate, known for dull speeches and a smooth demeanour, was addressing a packed audience where tables had been repurposed into an impromptu stage. Suddenly, an individual of considerable strength nicknamed "Bullocky Bill" silently slipped beneath the tables, to tip the chairman and the candidates into the crowd. The incident was received with amusement. The Exchange Hotel underwent several renovations and extensions but was demolished (together with other properties) in 1935 to allow for the expansion of the McLaren Wharf and the re-alignment of McLaren Parade. #WindBackWednesday #LifeLongLearning #libariesSA #PartOfYourEveryday #adelaidehistory

Winding back to a beautiful Divine Mercy Sunday at Heart of Jesus Catholic Church Maronite Rite. My first Maronite mass and at 3pm we prayed The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. You could feel the healing taking place as we prayed in unison🙏🏻✝️🤍* The Maronite Church is one of the 22 Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church, under the authority of the Pope. (yes we prayed for the Pope) * As part of the Roman Catholic Church, the Maronites profess the same beliefs in the Dogmatic &Moral teachings of the Church and celebrate the same 7 Sacrements. Their liturgical celebrations are more unique and reflect their early Apostalic beginnings. For example, in some prayers and hymns of the Mass, the Maronites still use Syriac, a dialect of the Aramic language spoken by Jesus and his Apostles, and incense is regularly used. *During the civil and religious persecutions of the 7th century, the Maronites fled their churches and monasteries in the plains of Syria and took refuge in the verdant mountains and caves of nearby Lebanon. This week the Local History team takes you back to 1926 and a view of the SA Clubhouse Hotel, looking west towards Jervois Bridge. Hotel proprietor Mr. A. J. McCawley had a reputation for bravery, with a documented record of at least two rescues conducted in the Port River. In October 1924, Sir George Tom Molesworth Bridges (Lieutenant General and Governor of South Australia) conferred Royal Humane Society medals and certificates. Among the recipients were nine men who had courageously rescued individuals from the City of Singapore fire on April 20 at Port Adelaide. Mr. A.J. McCawley, a hotel proprietor, was honoured with a bronze medal for his bravery during that rescue. In 1926 Mr. A. J. McCawley rescued Mr. Robert Hunter, who found himself in difficulty in the Port River. It was reported that Mr McCawley ran from his hotel to plunge into the river and swim with Mr Hunter to a piling near the bridge where a boat later picked them up. Following the rescue, Mr. McCawley is reported to have discovered that his wallet containing valuable diamond rings and a sum of money had slipped from his pocket. Fortunately, Mr Bert Harris dived into the river to retrieve the jewellery and promptly returned them to Mr McCawley. #WindBackWednesday #LifeLongLearning #libariesSA #PartOfYourEveryday #adelaidehistory

Isaac Gepp worked as a water carrier and in 1846 held a licence for the public house initially named the Miller’s Friend and then the Miner’s Arms. In March 1848 he renewed his publican’s licence for his re-named Gepp’s Cross Inn. He transferred the licence to Joseph Ladd who was granted a publican’s licence for the Gepp’s Cross Inn in March 1849. Though Isaac Gepp then left the area, it continued the legacy of his name and the Gepp’s cross Hotel held an important place in the local history. In 1908, the Gepp’s Cross Cycling Club was reported to hold a racing event at the Gepp’s Cross Hotel. Mr A. C. Kuhlman, the proprietor of the Gepp’s Cross Hotel, was known to be an ardent supporter of the Cycling Club – regularly donating prizes. In 1911, newspapers reported the Gepp’s Cross Hotel as being surrounded by a “posse of police”. Why were police called? It was a Sunday, and the police were led to believe that there were a number of men inside the hotel drinking. At that time in SA, it was unlawful to sell liquor on a Sunday. Despite the drunken individuals present at the hotel, the glasses were empty of all but froth and it was asserted that the glasses were left from the previous night. In that instance the case was dismissed. In 1915, the Gepps Cross Hotel was promoted as a popular resort offering first class refreshments for travellers. This week the Local History team takes you back to the Railway Hotel that was standing directly across the road from the Port Adelaide Railway Station.In March 1856, the publican William Wooldridge was granted a licence and the following year it was transferred to his wife Mary. The hotel has a rich history including a fire in 1874 that was reported to have started in a basket of washing. The Railway Hotel had close links with the unions. In 1889 a mass meeting of railway employees took place at the Railway Hotel. It was reported that all employees were planning a general strike. In 1890 The Port branch of the Adelaide Institution of Marine Engineers met at the Railway Hotel and was reported to have put forward a resolution related to the effects of a shipping strike. The Railway Hotel made the news for both its charm and unexpected mishaps. In 1907, a drover staying at the Railway Hotel was reported to be have been sleep walking when he fell over the balcony – landing 20 feet below. Then, in 1932 it was reported that a wooden electric light pole snapped and crashed onto the balcony of the Railway Hotel accompanied by sparks and flames bursting from the wires.The Railway Hotel closed its doors in early 2014, re-opening for a short time soon after. #WindBackWednesday #LifeLongLearning #libariesSA #PartOfYourEveryday #adelaidehistory

Happy Wednesday One of my very first designs will always be so near and dear to my heart! Our client skipped the discovery call and immediately knew they wanted to move to the consultation. I was filled with excitement but anxious as the same time. From the moment we met our connection was meant to be! We designed two beautiful spaces in their home. Our reveal of their reaction to the primary bedroom shown here went viral. Their reaction was priceless! The love this couple have for each other was so amazing to witness. The husband wrote a love letter to his wife that we placed next to her side of the bed.
