Delighted to report that I have managed to acquire the most wonderful collection of silk on silk and silk on cotton suzanis from Uzbekistan. They really are exceptional pieces. The stitching, design and colour combinations are the best I have handled so far. I shall list them all in separate posts over the next few days, but for now a little glimpse of me rummaging through them. They make absolutely fabulous wall hangings and throws and are the perfect dressings for an Arts and Crafts interior. In the last pic you can see one of the collection as a bed cover and in the background a suzani that has been converted into a fabulous blind. Each piece is worked in silks on cotton or silks on silk in the classic Suzani stiches: tambour, basma, chain and kanda-khayol. Dies used for the silks: indigo for blue, cochineal and madder for reds, saffron for yellow, a mix of indigo and a yellow tree fungus for green, and iron oxide and pistachio nuts for black. They really are absolutely stunning. Finally reunited with this beauty recently. This machine is an 18A series crochet edge finishing machine from @merrowmachine that we acquired last Spring here in the U.K. The latch broke last June just before as we were prototyping some designs for a photoshoot in Vancouver. To make a long story very short, after several attempts with local sewing engineers, no one could figure out how to fix the issue. Determined to get this machine back up and running I started contacting every mechanic in the U.K. and Scotland as It was too expensive to send the head to the USA. Thank you to @treasuretrove_sewing_machines, a Manchester based business for taking on the challenge of fixing this machine. And for explaining things clearly to me on how I can change the latch in the future. Amazing. I do love Merrow machines but it’s not a favoured machine here in the U.K., mostly because there are no mechanics who know how to or want to learn how to maintain them.
