Our January Student of the Month was Jazmyne Stewart. She was nominated by her Preceptor Andy Gonzalez (DAT ’23): ‘Since her arrival to the AT Services Clinic, she has faced challenges head on. Through her initiative she has been able to relate, execute, and devise plans for our patients. Ms. Stewart has been able to manage the care of multiple patients at the same time, while keeping their individual needs in the forefront of her care. Additionally, she has formulated appropriate questions on topics that have yet to be covered in her coursework. Ms. Stewart has demonstrated confidence in translating what she has learned in class and incorporate it in real world practice. I can see how she has started to fine tune her evaluation and therapeutic intervention processes. This is most noticeable in the progression of her patient encounters. I can only imagine as time goes on how much Ms. Stewart will grow into being a top clinician.’ Keep up the great work Jaz! 🎉

In honor of #305day, here’s one of the most Miami things about me: I got my AA from @mdchonors at @mdcollege, my BA from @fiuinstagram, and my MSED from @univmiami Literary the trifecta of Miami Dade County higher education! I’m also a proud product of @mdcps.schools The fact I was priced out of Miami Dade County is one of the great sadnesses in my life. We definitely need affordable housing reform, better (or even half decent) public transit, and to NOT be charged $10 for taking I-95 express. For better or for worse, even from my current home outside the county line, I will always be #305tillidie PS: the other super Miami thing about me is that I unapologetically LOVE @pitbull! If I were ever to bring a cishet man on The First Gen Coach Podcast, it would be him! I mean seriously, who else loves women the way Pitbull loves women?? 😂😂😂 #firstgen #latinaswithmasters #gocanes #worldsahead #gosharks #latinapodcasters #onlyindade #latinacareercoach

Our November Student of the Month was John Wentzel, MSAT Class of 2024. He was nominated by his Preceptor, Michele Benz, who had this to say: “John came to Palmetto High School and immediately jumped in like he had been working here for years. He brought a great energy and that transcended to the patients he worked with. He found unique and modern exercises and kept them coming back for more. His patient centered care is so impressive that multiple coaches commented as to how wonderfully he treated their athletes. He was the first to jump up when anyone came in for evaluations and he took his time with them, healed them using his "voodoo" and showed everyone how dedicated he is to patient care and recovery. Our student aids adored him, but he had the largest cult following of athletes that I have ever seen one student garner! It was because he was kind, funny, attentive and understanding and they respected and loved him for that. We even started finding some of our football players attempting to grow mustaches to emulate him. He connected on many levels with these young athletes and was a role model for them, which I greatly appreciate.” Well done, John!

On August 18th, a student-athlete from America Heritage School collapsed on the sideline of a pre-season football game. Luckily, the team’s Athletic Training staff jumped into action quickly leading to the best possible outcome for the 17-year-old. Head Athletic Trainer Frank Millan (MSAT ’08) and Assistant Athletic Trainer Nicholle-Christine Galletti (MSAT ’20) performed CPR and initiated use of the AED immediately. They were assisted by other healthcare providers, including Sharnice Byrd (MSAT ‘19), Head Athletic Trainer for the opposing team Booker T. Washington High School. “We did a lot of these scenarios, and you prepare for the worst, and you hope for the best and when that worst does show up — you are ready. Being able to assess what’s going on, how quickly and determining that care can actually decide an outcome and save a life,” Millan said. Galletti added “For me, the most important thing was that we were THERE on the sideline and ready. We trusted our training and we were able to quickly assess the situation. Millan and I have practiced emergency scenarios with our fellow colleagues which prepared us to act quickly and confidently in such a unique situation.” Athletic Trainers save lives. These secondary schools understand that ATs are integral parts of their athletic departments. Without them, the outcome may have been different. If your organization does not have an AT – think about that and demand change. If yours does, be sure to show your appreciation! We are extremely proud of these alumni and all the others who provide care daily to athletes across the country. PawsUp🐾🐾

Our July Student of the Month is Bryan Castillo, MSAT Class of 2024. He was nominated by Gabby Arancio, Head AT at Miami FC. ‘Bryan was an absolute asset to Miami FC during his time with us. He went above and beyond in multiple capacities, included but not limited to- great attitude, attentiveness, optimism, hard work, and dedication. He went the extra mile in all tasks, and was visibly enthusiastic and proud to be learning with our team. He had great rapport with athletes and coaches, and flourished greatly in his clinical skills during his rotation in evaluation, rehabilitation, and treatment. Beyond this, Bryan asked questions pertinent to the field and demonstrated a high desire to be the best clinician he could be, it’s my honor to recommend him!’ Well done Bryan 🎉

Last week I was invited to attend an event organized by the White House and the Colombian Embassy in honor of Colombian Independence Day. I joined fellow Colombian Americans from all over the country. There were academics, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, elected officials, engineers from NASA and much more. It was truly an honor to be amongst such distinguished leaders in celebration of not only the achievements of the Colombian diaspora and Colombian Independence Day. But also of the unique and special relationship between the USA and Colombia over decades. This experience was truly inspiring. But it was made all the more special because I was able to share it with my grandmother, the matriarch of our family, who made it all possible. It is never lost on me, that her resilience and her determination to uplift her family is at the core of how we are able to reach the heights we did and do. I felt truly blessed to be able to share this moment with her and we were grateful and overjoyed to meet so many talented Colombian movers and shakers. The experience was complete with Colombian coffee in beautiful blue and white cups, Colombian empanadas, gift bags that were able to take with us with an assortment of Colombian goodies and the sound of our music playing lightly in the background. #orgullocolombiano #colombia #colombianindependenceday #colombiainthehouse #colombiainthehouse🇨🇴 #whitehouse #worldsahead #colombiainthewhitehouse

Our March Students of the Month are Yolimar Toro Morales and David Ramos. 🔹Yoli was nominated by her Preceptor Andy Gonzalez: “Since her start at AT Services, Yolimar has blossomed into mastering her craft as a future certified athletic trainer. She has accepted the challenges of working with medical emergencies, adapting to diverse patient populations, and assisting with rugby games. Yolimar is keen on her time and has shown beyond exceptional communication skills. Yoli always shows excitement to learn while keeping in mind the mission of patient centered care.” 🔹David was nominated by Preceptors Jessica Pokryfke, Jennifer Asuaje, and Stevens Sanchez from Inter Miami CF: “David has been an excellent addition to our team. We have watched him develop and hone his skills to become the healthcare professional he is today. He has gained the trust and respect of the players, coaches, and medical personnel. He has proven to be versatile and adaptable; whether that be working Academy games, helping with MLS II training sessions, or running treatment sessions for injured MLS players. He is able to complete an evaluation, a course of action, and return to play on his own. David has been an invaluable piece of our club this year. He exemplifies what IMCF’s “La Familia” culture is all about! We have no doubt that he will thrive in any environment when he becomes an AT.” Well done Yoli and David!🎉
