Workshop scenes: Fresh thrown small vases… James doesn’t know this yet but I want the top part to be unglazed (as in image of finished carafes). Fresh thrown carafes- still wet and gleaming in the dusk. Some decorated beakers… which I’m impatient to see finished… whilst acknowledging that anticipation is sweet! Some (slightly underwhelming) “yellow” lineblends from the last firing. Some lovely finished flatware in white, tenmoku and persimmon from the last firing… which we’ll be showing at Abergavenny Food Festival afoodfestival in mid-September theartshopandchapel That’s basically it… other than It’s our youngest daughter’s birthday today (Rachel, 19) ⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️ so we might not be working very hard. 😁 #theartshopandchapel #theChapel #ceramicmakersmarket #ceramicmakersmarket23 #abergavennyfoodfestival #AFF2023

This is the final process in our production. James is using wet and dry paper on the rough, unglazed areas of the pots to make them smooth - which makes a subtle but significant difference. We do it in a bucket of water to avoid dust. In some ways it’s an unglamorous/ boring job, but I welcome it as a chance to get a thorough look and feel of the work… especially as I may not have been very involved with the making. How a pot (specially a mug) feels is so important… and my personal theory is that for lasting appeal, feel is more important than looks. Do any other potters do this too? These plates and bowls will be at the makers market theartshopandchapel as part of the Abergavenny Food Festival next weekend. afoodfestival #theartshopandchapel #theChapel #ceramicmakersmarket #ceramicmakersmarket23 #abergavennyfoodfestival #aff2023

We've broken our miso making record! Previously, our largest miso batch has been just over 100kg. This week we smashed that - making one batch weighing 249.4Kg! We also did a second batch this week, weighing 248.9Kg. That's almost half a tonne of fava bean miso in a week! The reason for this sudden increase in miso production is due to the fantastic news that Umami Chef has been confirmed as a vendor for Abergavenny Food Festival. This year it's taking place on 21st/22nd September - just in time for these batches of miso to mature to perfection. Tickets have just gone on sale. We hope to see you there! Massive thanks to Fiona @fiona.screen and Alex @force_of_nature_chef for their amazing hard work. #misomaking @afoodfestival #abergavennyfoodfestival
