These are not white bells like #bluebells but #threecorneredleek an edible we can forage at this time of year. In Calderstones park #liverpool they are on mass providing a incredible site that wouldn't have been planned, but just happened. The generous leeks quickly populate space they have a habit of seeding themselves even up in #trees. In medieval times a 3 year rotation of crops was used, pulses, grain. then left fallow. In fallow time animals grazed + fertilised the earth, ready for growing the year later. The fallow year was also when the 'weeds' grew feeding the animals and providing more health befits to them, humans and wildlife. Gardens were divided into narrow strips, to lean over and not tread on the soil, while paths would be grass to encourage insects etc. The Gardeners Labyrinth book of 1577 shows illustrations of beds that look like raised 'no - dig', the trendy idea of today, that is actually centuries old. @stephaniehafferty is one of our ambassadors and uses this method at her homestead in #wales. #companionplanting was also the norm back then, as working with #nature and using all allies was commonsense to reduce work and maintain healthy plants + soils, but also free food + medicine. Some, had gone away for these commonsense methods, but hopefully are returning to it as a lifestyle choice as #wearetheark Our speaker @johncullengardens Is talking on this subject on 18th May, have you joined this educational charity yet, if so join the on - line event it will be food for thought. #standupforherbs #herbs #growyourownherbs #foraging #seasonality #natureinspired #naturewatcher #herbgardens #herbalidentification #wildherbs #whiteflowers

One of my favorite ingredients and annual harbinger of spring - wild garlic! I remember a lifetime ago when I used to forage for these… Every year, we serve it from early March for a couple of months. They are best early into the season. The season is fleeting, and this morning I saw that they have started to bloom, which means they will be gone soon … We will bring in the last few batches and preserve them to make them last… There is always so much beauty in nature’s rhythm … #wildgarlic #seasonality #foraging #ramsons

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.” My biggest harvest yet! 164 😁 Morel Hunting Tips ✅ -Patience is key, conditions may look perfect but morels are finicky. -Look around Elm, Poplar, Ash, Apple, and Sycamore. -Check creek banks that recently had high water that has receded. -A day or two after a hard rain is prime time! -If you get frustrated, have a seat on the ground, an up close perspective may change everything (be sure you’re wearing tick repellent!) -Cook morels extremely throughly! -Dehydrate extras (although you probably won’t have any!) 😋 Good luck! My plantain pen holder basket :) Made from narrow leaf plantain stems. Not the banana looking fruit, but a very common plant often considered a weed! Shout out again to @foragedfibres for giving me the idea to try using plantain stems. • Im going to make a lid for the basket as well. I ran out of materials faster than I anticipated, because I ended up making it so tall. So I will be collecting more stems this upcoming season to finish it. Im still happy with it just as it is though :) • You have almost certainly seen plantain before. It is a humble plant that grows almost everywhere. There is a wide leaf variety, and a narrow leaf variety. Both varieties are medicinal and often used in a pinch for bug bites. • Featured in the back of the main photo are violets and redbud flowers. Both of which I will be making jellies and syrups with soon! Has anyone worked with redbud blooms before? This will be my first time 😍 • #wildbasketry #wildcrafting #wildcrafted #wildcraft #basketweaving #foraging #basketmaking #naturalfibers #narrowleafplantain #bushcrafting #weaving #natureinspired #basketry

Our first outdoor foraging class of the season was with students, families, and teachers of The Blake School. Springtime often sneaks up on us, so we might miss the amazing season of tender greens and flavors if we only notice plants once their flowers are in bloom. If you're anything like me, the springtime greens season is something you look forward to all winter, many of which probably grow in your garden or landscaping, which means extra work for you weeding them out. Flip the script and harvest them for the delicious and nutritious vegetables they are! Spring foraging classes are filling up so tell your friends and join today! #foraging #Minneapolis #eattheweeds #rewild #nativeplants

First Nature Journal Club was a success! ✍️ 🌿 We meandered through the woods, taking a closer look at all the plants around us. Noticing. Being curious. Asking questions. It was beautiful! 😩 Then it was sketching! For some, their first time ever, for others, something they already practice! I loved getting to see everyone’s interpretations of what they observed. How they observed it and what questions they asked themselves to learn more about what they were looking at! 🔥 Did you know being curious stimulated the reward center of our minds? It triggers the release of dopamine and activates the hippocampus which is where new memories are formed! 🧠 my brain is full of dopamine and so much gratitude not only for the beautiful humans who came today, but also for Mother Nature! #naturejournal #naturejournaling #onlyincbus #exploreohio #ohiowildflowers #ohiowildlife #foraging #foragedfood #sketchacrosstheworld #sketchdaily #sketchaday #johnmuirlaws

It's recipe time! I like to talk about cultivating uncommon native vegetables but if you don't know tasty ways to eat them, what's the point? This recipe for a (nearly)-all-wild potato leek soup incorporates groundnuts (Apios americana), ramps (Allium tricoccum), stinging nettles (Urtica dioica), and sochan (Rudbeckia laciniata). I will say first off that indigenous cultures should be the starting point for sources of information on how to eat any particular plant. Some plants may require specific preparations to make them edible or nutritious and any cultural or sacred traditions should be respected. But in addition, humans have borrowed food plants from many locales in a syncretistic manner to add to their own cooking traditions since the dawn of time so I believe creating new recipes for modern times is justified. If you'd like to make this vegan, cashew cream and olive oil could replace the cream and bacon. In fact, #rampseason is the only time of year that I purchase bacon but I feel it's justified to make extremely tasty foods from these super healthy plants. (Nearly)-All-Wild Potato Leek Soup 1 lb groundnuts 6 oz ramps (1 bunch) 5 oz nettles, tender tops 1 small bunch young sochan leaves 5 C water 4 oz bacon 1 C heavy cream 1 TBL miso 2 bay leaves 1 tsp salt Black pepper Wash groundnuts and peel at least half of them, cut into 1/4 inch cubes Wash ramps, remove roots, chop finely, reserving some stem bits raw for topping Wash and pre-cook nettles by sautéing for 5 min until wilted, then puree in a blender Chop sochan leaves finely Render fat from bacon in a large pot over medium-low heat. Remove bacon to a plate to cool and crumble later as topping Cook groundnuts, ramps, and sochan in bacon fat for 5-10 minutes over medium-high heat until beginning to brown Add water, pureed nettles, miso, salt, pepper, and bay leaves. Bring to boiling over high heat, then reduce to low and simmer for 30-40 minutes. Taste for salt and add cream and heat gently if needed. Cream can also be added to individual bowls instead. Serve with crumbled bacon, chopped fresh ramps, and (opt. parmesan cheese or crackers) #wildfoods #foraging #permaculture #forestfarming

Wild Garlic season is definitely upon us, and thanks to the Malago river the paths leading up towards Dundry are absolutely covered with a carpet of delicate white flowers, but please take care when visiting/foraging as the tracks are steep and slippery❗ 🥗 Easily one of the most popular wild foods, you can use the leaves in salads, soups, pesto, wild garlic butter, savoury baking - anywhere you want to add a garlicky punch to your favourite dishes. If you have a favourite recipe, please share it with us! 🤤One of our favourite uses of wild garlic is the delicious seasonal sausage recipe from @yewtreefarm11 - we always freeze some for later in the year! ⚠️ As always, when foraging please take only what you will be eating, leave plenty for wildlife, and don't pick it if you're not 100% sure it's safe. (There are other leaves that look similar that will make you very ill!) ☠️ . . . #wildflowers #foraging #wildfood

🎼Here we go ‘round the mulberry bush The mulberry bush The mulberry bush Here we go ‘round the mulberry bush On a cold and frosty morning…🎼 Did you grow up singing this folk song? I sure did. But did you know that the original this folk song are a bit grim? While the song “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” was not recorded as a children’s singing game until the mid-19th century in England, the song and its instructional directions - like washing your face, putting on your clothes, and mending your shoes - might have actually been sung by the female prisoners of HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire. The women conceivably passed the song on as a game to their children when/if they were released and that is how the song spread and eventually became associated as a playground tune. Another local legend suggest that I’m an effort to compete with Chinese silk production, the British government planted mulberry trees (prime habitats for silkworms) to grow the industry and bolster their textile trade. However, the mulberry trees could not stand up to the cold winters and the lyrics, “in the cold and frosty morning”, might actually be poking fun of this effort. What’s your take? For me, I’m inclined to believe that female prisoners passed the song on to their children. That seems pretty logical and it’s a story backed up by local historians and folklorist, so I’ll go with that! Anyway, I’m just excited I caught the tree near our swamp producing and was able to grab a handful. Mulberries are great but their shelf life is only a few days and if you eat them when they are not ripe they can be toxic. Knowledgeable foraging, folks! #folksong #folkhorrorweek #folktales #musichistory #okwx #wildoklahoma #oklahomalife #foraging #wildeats #foragedfood #oklahomaforaging #naturewalk

Found my first morel of the year! I technically found two but they were very sad, unfortunately. I gave them a new home closer to home in the hopes of future propagation. Also found TONS of pheasant back/dryad’s saddle! Learned the younger ones definitely have better texture than the older ones (and I did managed foraging from several areas - not just one tree or area). And I’ve seen tons of posts about the life span of trillium, lately, and the forest is FULL of beautiful flowers right now. And can someone ID those last ones for me? Are they turkey tail or a fake?
