Thanks to @hicahs, we held yet another Gear Up for Ag Health and Safety - Veterinary program at @ndsu.official. The program included 44 young adults vet techs in two 1.5 hour programs. Participants received a cooler bag, safety eyewear, two pairs of chemically resistant gloves, two pairs of hearing protection, and an N95 respirator without valve. I often use a line from the FFA creed for posts about hosting groups of high school or college students on the farm. The line is “I believe in the future of agriculture”. Today we hosted the officer team for @ncffa and those words came to life. These 6 students (accompanied by their advisor) are on the back half of their terms as officers. They are all currently college students engrossed in the next chapter of their lives. As we talked about their roles as officers and a team, they shared with me part of the process that they went through when applying to be officers and how now they are starting the process to find the next set of state officers. There are many questions to answer and lengthy formal interviews to choose those 6 people who will represent NC FFA at the state level. So why is sharing this info important? I was thoroughly impressed today at the level of commitment it takes to become an officer and then to see that role through. FFA is more than a school club or organization. Those letters stand for something and I was certainly given reason today to be optimistic and to believe in the future of agriculture with this group. FFA is preparing the next generation of ag leaders and educators. Even if FFA members do not choose an agricultural career, what they have learned about leadership, service and commitment will make them stand outs in their vocations, families and communities. We toured the farm’s “home base” and tobacco barns, our greenhouses where we grow tobacco plants, and no field trip would be complete without a visit to the packing shed. We ended our time with a trip to Woodard’s Drug Store for an ice cream treat! Since first being detected in cattle back in March, we have been following how high path avian flu is impacting the dairy industry. So far, six states have confirmed HPAI in cattle and some states have issued movement restrictions as preventative measures. During last week's Gear Up for Ag Health and Safety Program at @msstate, we devised a new strategy after the program. Instead of handing out all the cartridge style respiratory protection DURING the program, we had several young adults identify as higher risk and invited them to stay after the program for more intensive and hands-on respiratory protection training, where they were fitted and practiced donning and doffing their respirators, as well as fit checks. They learned all about respirator fit testing. In all, we had 10 young adults participate in this option! The program heavily emphasized pesticide safety and was funded by a community grant from @percpesticide. #pesticidesafety #mississippiag #agleaders

If you have had the honor to meet, know & work with even ONE of these B-Nita’s then you’ve been blessed, but all three??? and in the same place at once??? The words Purpose, Power, & Progress immediately come to mind… strong or beautiful would just be too simple, and almost an insult, to describe them with. As we prepare for the launch of our Southern SARE Common Ground Podcast, these are just a few of our anticipated guests. 👑 Bonita Clemons, South Carolina, @farmasissc 👑 Benita Martin, Virgin Islands, @wegrowfoodinc 👑 Bonita Adeeb, Maryland+ @yrcp_steamonward @ujamaafarms #AgLeaders #WomenInAg #WomeinInAgriculture. It is important to note that these women are global and I really didn’t want to assign a particular location to them, by the ones I did use are simply where they chose to currently reside and be known for doing work in person most recently. While they were not all necessarily born where they currently reside, wherever they live their work extends to Africa, throughout the Caribbean, on the continental USA and beyond. I’d rather them each tell their specific stories, but just had to add that info for some generalized context. One day I will get back to publicly interviewing or sharing dialogue with all those that I come into contact with who have stories I’d like to share to help motivate and educate us, but until then, I’m soaking it all in for cultivating my self along my own journey, somewhat selfishly for now so that I can be rejuvenated in spirit, mind and body. Congrats to our good friend and CLBL Board Member Jeana Hultquist and VP of Legislative Affairs for American AgCredit, for being awarded the National FFA Honorary American Degree at the National FFA Convention! For the last 40+ years, she’s advocated in D.C. and with local legislators on behalf of our farmers and ranchers, and she has been a tireless champion for CLBL and future generations of farmers and ag leaders. Jeana says, “Some of my most rewarding work has been seeing American AgCredit take the lead in acknowledging the importance of partnering with local nonprofits—such as FFA, Kitchen Table Advisors, and the Center for Land-Based Learning—to fight food insecurity and support the next generation of ag producers.” Thank you, Jeana, for all you do! #agleaders
AG Social is thrilled to introduce you to the agriculture industry leaders on the AG Social Advisory Board. Meet Charlie Elke! Charlie was born and raised on her family’s grain farm just northwest of Jansen, Saskatchewan and continues to assist with seasonal operations when her work schedule permits. She graduated from SIAST in 2016 with her Instrumentation Engineering Technician diploma, and after graduation, she began her career in the ag retail industry where she worked as a Quality Assurance Specialist. In this role, Charlie primarily focused on NH3 compliance, training and certifications and led the safety committees. In addition to the core functions of her quality assurance role, Charlie has always had a keen interest in communications and marketing, resulting in her taking on the challenge of leading the company’s social media team. During this time, Charlie gained an understanding and knowledge of what farmers and ranchers truly found educational, informative, and engaging when it came to social media marketing. This gave her insights and the added perspective of how to present quality content to farmers and ranchers. Charlie currently works at the Jansen mine site for BHP as a Camp and Logistics Superintendent. In her spare time, she enjoys coaching her niece’s hockey teams, chasing her nephew around the province with hockey, and playing as much golf as possible throughout the summer. Emerald #CottonGrower Aaron Kiely has been elected President of the Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF), succeeding Allan Dingle who is stepping down following completion of his four-year tenure in the role. Mr Kiely was elected Non-Executive Director and Vice President of QFF in 2021, and is also past President of the Central Highlands Cotton Growers and Irrigators Association Inc. #DairyFarmer and current Non-Executive Director Kay Tommerup will step into the Vice President position, with Georgie Krieg, a cotton grower, also joining the QFF Board. “I would like to thank QFF’s members for trusting me to take on this important position not only for QFF but for the #QueenslandAgriculture sector,” Mr Kiely said. “I would also like to thank outgoing President Allan Dingle for his service to the #AgSector and his leadership of QFF during the past four years.” QFF CEO Jo Sheppard GAICD also extended her gratitude to Allan for his contribution to QFF and the membership during his time in the President position. “I am proud of what has been achieved however there is still so much work that needs to be done and I am looking forward to working alongside Aaron and the QFF Board to ensure we can continue working for our members and industry to strengthen the future of Queensland #agriculture and #RegionalCommunities,” Ms Sheppard said.
